CALIFORNIA DREAMIN'September 2, 2010 Bob and I hadn’t seen California in 14 years, so-----on our way to New Zealand----we thought we’d stop and check it out! We had cashed in some miles on Delta and enjoyed the flight from Sarasota, FL. LAX was busy, busy, busy (it was Labor Day weekend, what were we thinking?!), but we soon got through the car rental process. Bob had booked a bargain on Priceline--$150 for five days—but I knew all was lost when he started checking out the ragtops! So, we doubled the price plus and left in a midnight blue... read more

Trip Dates: June 19th 2017 - July 10th 2017 Yep, It's me, the Alien and I'm at it again! Last year I took an epic ride across America and a few folks have told name that they enjoyed following along with my misadventures. To kick off this year's trip, this post will contain FAQ's, route information, preparations and equipment. FAQ's: 1. Really? Again? You didn't have enough of this last year? Yeah. Yeah. No. 2. How can you just leave your wife at home and go off on these trips? Mrs. Alien is very understanding about these rides. She is always invited to come along but long miles on the bike for weeks at a time is not her idea of fun. This year, she will fly out to meet me in Montana where we will ... read more

... is going to the car hire depot on your 52nd birthday to pick up your economy compact for the weekend, and driving out in a Mustang convertible. Oh yeah. We spent Saturday touring the hotspots, top down, ticking off Venice beach (tacky), the Griffith Observatory and Hollywood Boulevard walk of fame which was just crazy!! It was full of people demonstrating: against Trump, for Trump, pro life, pro Jesus, anti Christian. Everyone was dressed as a superhero and the Chinese tourists went mad over the Jackie Chan star, lying down on the pavement next to it to take a selfie, oblivious of the hundreds of people walking long the boulevard. I'm not sure if my favourite moment was the mounted policeman parking outside Starbucks to get a coffee to go, or meeting the bright orange ... read more

We left London at 4pm on the 12th May, landing in Los Angeles at about 7.30pm local time. Flight with Air New Zealand was good... Pros: punctual, comfy seats with adequate space, good inflight entertainment and Spencer discovered he could order (free) food and drink electronically via the inflight entertainment system, delivered to his seat. Cons: the slighty crazy American woman I sat next to who buzzed constantly for the flight attendants and watched LaLa Land (perhaps the clue was in the name?) three times, laughing loudly in all the wrong places. Trouble free shuttle to the airport Crown Plaza where we are staying for three nights before picking up the RV... and here we are. Spencer made his usual pronouncement about the best way to beat jet lag (stay awake until the local bedtime). Before ... read more

The end of the holiday has arrived and it is time to fly home today. The flight was in the afternoon again, which is late enough not to be in a hurry but too early to do anything particular with the day. Hence it is the first day that we have been able to get out of bed late and take it reasonably slowly. We have had another email back from the San Francisco Transit people in response to our complaint, so hopefully that means that we can sort-out mugged-off #2 following that very short but expensive ride on the cable car. We put the TV on for the local LA breakfast show. It was the usual nondescript, low key nonsense, but there was a report live from Hermosa Beach on the national lifeguard championships. That ... read more

Up at 9am, and need to reorganize all the luggage before we check out at 11am as the luggage limits are quite different for domestic flights here in USA compared with the flight back home on Virgin Australia. We have to put more stuff in checked in baggage and less in our carry on luggage. I really need to do something with the little purple suitcase as we only get 7kg carry of limit and it weighs over 3kg when it is empty ! I forgot to mention last night how I saw something I had never seen before when we were in Fremont Street. I went to the loo at the Golden Nugget Casino and there was a special container on the wall to place your can/bottle of beer in whilst doing what we boys ... read more

Los Angeles It is now about 7.30am and daylight is just breaking as we walked outside the LAX terminal building and started looking for the free hotel shuttle. This place always reminds me of the movie flying high movie from the 1970’s as I keep hearing over the p.a. system “no parking in the white zone’’. We walked and walked an walked and finally found the right area. Just what we needed ! 10 minutes later the blue shuttle bus rolls in. A nice man puts our luggage in and no other passengers onboard so we have private transfer for the 5 minute ride to 4 Points Sheraton LAX and on arrival it was really quiet so we had no problem checking in. Our room was ready and in the older wing section, but did not ... read more

We've dropped off Jeep MK2 and checked in with a nice 4 hour wait till our boarding time so I thought I would write a final post about yesterday. On our way from Anaheim, we had a couple of hours to spare and it was a beautiful day so we decided to make a stop at Huntington Beach before checking in at the queen Mary. This was defiantly our kind of beach. Miles of white sand coast, surf and cheap on street parking! It even has a section before you get onto the main beach with fire pits and litter bins so you can spend your day sun bathing and finish it off with a regulated fire/bbq without being told to move on (like in UK). The Queen Mary was our next and final Stop permanently ... read more

And suddenly, it was over. Sorry for the extended delay. The past two days consisted mostly of doing some very serious hanging out with some high-quality people in Kingman, AZ and while this makes for excellent brain-balm it also makes for fucking boring blog posts. To that end, I'll cram the last three days into this final post. The past three days had been spent at the home of Ron and Margie Stinchfield, relatives of Kennedy's and some of the best, most genuinely good people I've met in a very long time. They took us into their home for three full days, fed us and filled us with coffee and tea and stories and just a lot of good times. I'm truly grateful for everything you did, you two. It was a real pleasure spending time ... read more

I'll make the entry brief as there really wasn't a lot to mention. We were up at 6am and out the door by 7. We'd had a lovely restful night's sleep and it was about a ten minute walk to the Amtrak station. Checking in again was simple. We did need our tickets and identification then handed over our bags. The heaviest was about 47 pounds (not sure of the conversion to kg) and the lightest was just over 44... We grabbed a station coffee (don't do it! Really... Don't do it!!) then boarded the train. The trip was relatively uneventful except for the couple having a melt-down/breakup behind us. Dinner and a Show!!! We did notice a lot of homeless encampments along the way, and I have a couple of pics - it is really ... read more
