Well, here's the first post to my shiny new travel blog. I don't have much exciting to say- not that that's ever stopped me before- but I'm stuck at LAX for another four and a half hours at least so I figured I'd get this party started. My trip was supposed to take me from Austin to LA, and from there a leisurley fifteen and a half hour flight over to Melbourne, where my program orientation takes place. Of course, that wasn't enough of an adventure, SO. :) My flight out of Austin was delayed two hours, making my 7:30PM flight now leaving at 9:55PM. It's a three and a half hour flight, but the time change is in our favor, so the estimated arrival time was 11:05 (we actually arrived at 11:15.) My flight to ... read more

Finally we packed all the kit and with thanks to Glen Richardson we got to Dublin Airport for 05.15 for the flight to London. Unfortunately the travel agent gave us 2 separate bookings so we had to check the bags in at Dublin, collect in LHR and wait 4 hours before checking in for the flight to Los Angeles. Why is it so hard is it to eat healthy meals when on the move?? Convenience foods no thank you. 12 hour flight from Heathrow to Los Angeles was covered in 10.5 hours but the 2 hour delay getting through US emigration not so healthy for the head. Must say Air New Zealand were fantastic, (they covered the cost of getting the race kit including bike from london to Christchurch, getting it home however is a different ... read more

Thirteen years ago I embarked on a yearlong study abroad program in Rome Italy, after which I traveled western and central Europe for three months. Times have changed since then in terms of travel. I remember the day I left for Italy. My mother, father, and brother were all allowed to accompany me to my gate. After many goodbyes and a promise to call when I got to Rome, I was the last to board the plane. I remember I could actually see my house as we flew above and how ironic it was that I got to see it one last time before my yearlong expedition. Living in Italy and traveling Europe for three months completely changed my views on life, politics, friendships, love, studies, and instilled a deep desire to travel as much as ... read more

It's almost 5pm in Los Angeles so I'm half way through my stop over... almost. I managed to get 3 or 4 hours sleep on the flight last night (which is actually awesome for me from past experiences) so now I'm attempting to stay awake until my next flight at midnight. This plan is in hope that I can start (trying) to get used to the massively different time zone. Good luck to me.. The helpful, hardworking, intelligent staff at LAX directed me in three different directions to find the food court, but after an hour of walking around with my big pack, and two other bags, I finally found it! It could have been the "language barrier" between Aussie and American english, either that or they were just pretending to work there?? Oh well... In ... read more

We will put up another couple of posts about this trip. We need to do our normal thing and provide a wrap of the USA and we want to provide the trip statistics so that anyone who is interested can see what it cost, how far we travelled and how many countries we visited. That sort of thing. We have also developed some 'rules' for travellers and we will put them up as a bit of fun and maybe even some value for others. But this post is the last one we will publish while we are actually on the trip as such. And it is not easy to write. We are going back to Australia today. A nice little trip across the Pacific to New Zealand and then a jump across the ditch to Sydney. ... read more

So the day finally arrived for me to start the new chapter in my life. Of course I woke up much later than I had anticipated...this was good in a way. It meant that I didn’t have any down time prior to getting to the airport. I had packed most of my stuff the evening prior. All that was left was to pack the carry on bags. I, of course, packed in as much stuff a possible...not forgetting to pack extra underpants, shorts and shirts just incase the rest of my stuff didn’t arrive in Thailand when I did. Shannon and I left the house 15 mins later than originally planned (Shannon was ready, I wasn’t). As we pulled into LAX, I thought, “Wow, this is a city within itself.” It was amazingly large, and difficult ... read more

Deeeaaar Diary, Juuuust kidding. Firstly, let me apologize in advance for my inevitable blunders as I enter the world of blogging. I vow to keep things brief. No one wants to spend an hour reading about my tomfoolery. I've packed, I've cried, I've hugged, I've worriedly crossed my t's and dotted my i's. Onward I must march. From LAX I'll jump on a red eye and fly 10 hours to Frankfurt, then a short 1 hour connecting flight to Brussels. Via train, I'll head from Brussels to Leuven and hopefully a smiling Canadian, named Laura, will be there to welcome me with a Stella Artois, and a waffle. (A girl can dream, no?) Seeing as I'll arrive with no permanent residence secured, I'll hit the streets with Laura in search of a flat while staying in ... read more

The adventure has begun... with a flight delay. Got to LAX at about 7.30am and now its not scheduled to leave until 1.30pm -- I guess that's just international travel - never goes as planned. I hate this airport, and I'm soooo tired! Got 3 hours of sleep last night, I'm grumpy and just want to get to Dubai! I was excited to have a whole day to play and explore Dubai.. but now I'll only have an evening/night- wake up and be on my way to Tanzania, than more flights within Tanzania to get to Kilimanjaro. It's all so exciting and I'm super anxious...it's an amazing thought that in 48 hours I'll be in standing on Tanzanian soil, looking up at Kilimanjaro surrounded by the plains of sub saharan africa. Too great!!!!!!!... read more
