Dr. Brad Farris (neuro-ophthalmologist), Dr. Annie Chan (senior resident and DMEI Cornea Fellow next year) and Dr. Adam Carver (senior resident and Retina Fellow at DMEI next year. We left two other senior residents at home to take care of business...and because we took them to Swaziland on a similar trip earlier this year (Dr. Hobbs and Dr. Adesina). We will be meeting Dr. Ron Kingsley (medical retina specialist at DMEI) in C... read more
May 25, 2012 (Los Angeles LAX) Well we had a very smooth and on time flight to LAX on the American Eagle Regional Jet. Took the bus to the Main terminal and now lounging in the Admiral's Club waiting 4hrs till the Cathay flight to Hong Kong. That will leave from the International Terminal and will take us a while to check in given that we need to clear security again. Residents (Chan and Carver) slept the whole flight. The two of them missed the shuttle bus with us, but caught up in time - slow on the draw! We all have our computers, ipads, phones charging and getting online while we can. More from the other side of the Pacific!... read more
Los Angeles day 1
Published: April 8th 2012North America » United States » California » Los Angeles » LAXWe left Anaheim in lovely sunshine and drove the scenic route round Palos Verdes where pirates of the Carribean was shot offshore. We stopped at the Wayfarers Chapel where a wedding was in progress in possibly the most picturesque chapel in the world made from glass and timber in a Redwood grove. Continuing on we passed the beaches of South bay until we came to picturesque El Segundo beach with its power station behind and $ 8 charge for parking! We checked into our smart business hotel with heated pool then set off after a Carls Jr.burger tea for the best view of LA from Griffith Park Observatory. Sadly it was so popular we could not park within a mile of the place so abandoned the idea and drove along Hollywood boulevard instead. It's a bit ... read more
SAN FRANCISCO & TOUR END
Published: April 1st 2012North America » United States » California » Los Angeles » LAXWe awoke to rain – heavy rain and all thoughts of walking the city for the day quickly disappeared. We were also thankful that we had done the bridge walk yesterday, which meant that we would not have to brave the elements high up above San Francisco Bay. We were reminded of Mark Twain’s observation that the coldest winter he had experienced was a San Francisco summer. Today was to be spilt up into two parts. First we would do an included highlights tour of the city by coach and then there was an option of a ferry ride to Sausalito on the opposite side of the Bay. Narelle and I had steered clear of the optional extras to this point as we like to take the time to do our own thing but we opted ... read more

Published: April 1st 2012North America » United States » California » Los Angeles » LAXFiji-Episode 2 Monday 19th March Up late today after a bit more Skype talk with family and friends. Emma has sorted car insurance out for us all in our absence which we are very grateful for having saved us a stack load of cash. Really hot again today so after topping up at the included breakfast buffet we chilled by the pool for the remainder of the day. I am feeling a whole lot better now and looking forward to resuming the beer intake from tomorrow when i finish the course of dustbin lid tablets! Tuesday 20th March Time to move on today back to Nadi Town and hand the car back. We have booked a room at the Trans Continental Hotel for the night before transferring to Sonaisali Resort tomorrow. What People Say to You When You Knit at the Airport
Published: February 15th 2012North America » United States » California » Los Angeles » LAXWell, here's the first post to my shiny new travel blog. I don't have much exciting to say- not that that's ever stopped me before- but I'm stuck at LAX for another four and a half hours at least so I figured I'd get this party started. My trip was supposed to take me from Austin to LA, and from there a leisurley fifteen and a half hour flight over to Melbourne, where my program orientation takes place. Of course, that wasn't enough of an adventure, SO. :) My flight out of Austin was delayed two hours, making my 7:30PM flight now leaving at 9:55PM. It's a three and a half hour flight, but the time change is in our favor, so the estimated arrival time was 11:05 (we actually arrived at 11:15.) My flight to ... read more
Finally we packed all the kit and with thanks to Glen Richardson we got to Dublin Airport for 05.15 for the flight to London. Unfortunately the travel agent gave us 2 separate bookings so we had to check the bags in at Dublin, collect in LHR and wait 4 hours before checking in for the flight to Los Angeles. Why is it so hard is it to eat healthy meals when on the move?? Convenience foods no thank you. 12 hour flight from Heathrow to Los Angeles was covered in 10.5 hours but the 2 hour delay getting through US emigration not so healthy for the head. Must say Air New Zealand were fantastic, (they covered the cost of getting the race kit including bike from london to Christchurch, getting it home however is a different ... read more
Just getting there
Published: January 28th 2012North America » United States » California » Los Angeles » LAXThirteen years ago I embarked on a yearlong study abroad program in Rome Italy, after which I traveled western and central Europe for three months. Times have changed since then in terms of travel. I remember the day I left for Italy. My mother, father, and brother were all allowed to accompany me to my gate. After many goodbyes and a promise to call when I got to Rome, I was the last to board the plane. I remember I could actually see my house as we flew above and how ironic it was that I got to see it one last time before my yearlong expedition. Living in Italy and traveling Europe for three months completely changed my views on life, politics, friendships, love, studies, and instilled a deep desire to travel as much as ... read more
Longest 10 Hours of my Life...
Published: January 20th 2012North America » United States » California » Los Angeles » LAXIt's almost 5pm in Los Angeles so I'm half way through my stop over... almost. I managed to get 3 or 4 hours sleep on the flight last night (which is actually awesome for me from past experiences) so now I'm attempting to stay awake until my next flight at midnight. This plan is in hope that I can start (trying) to get used to the massively different time zone. Good luck to me.. The helpful, hardworking, intelligent staff at LAX directed me in three different directions to find the food court, but after an hour of walking around with my big pack, and two other bags, I finally found it! It could have been the "language barrier" between Aussie and American english, either that or they were just pretending to work there?? Oh well... In ... read more
