Las Vegas – USA Mon 26th March Well here we are at our final destination, Las Vegas in Nevada, USA. We had a quick flight flight from LAX into McCarran Airport and transferred to the Imperial Palace Hotel via the Shuttle service. Checked in to the room which was positioned overlooking the strip but unfortunately just above a 24hr noisy night club. Decided instantly to change rooms and upgraded to a suit at the rear of the complex. Cost us a little more but worth it for the peace and quiet. Rather an unusual room with mirrors on the ceiling above the bed and an enormous bath tub in the bedroom, also with mirrors above it! Make of that what you wish! Spent the evening walking parts of the strip and sightseeing before turning in to ... read more

Fiji-Episode 2 Monday 19th March Up late today after a bit more Skype talk with family and friends. Emma has sorted car insurance out for us all in our absence which we are very grateful for having saved us a stack load of cash. Really hot again today so after topping up at the included breakfast buffet we chilled by the pool for the remainder of the day. I am feeling a whole lot better now and looking forward to resuming the beer intake from tomorrow when i finish the course of dustbin lid tablets! Tuesday 20th March Time to move on today back to Nadi Town and hand the car back. We have booked a room at the Trans Continental Hotel for the night before transferring to Sonaisali Resort tomorrow. We didn’t rush driving back ... read more

Sunday 4thMarch Farewell NZ, hello Fiji. We had a good flight across the Pacific and touched down in Nadi in the early afternoon, being greeted by some welcome hot and humid weather plus being serenaded at arrivals by the local Bula band. No problems checking through customs despite declaring the fishing gear and Sue’s NZ sea shells. We found a waiting taxi and negotiated a price to the hotel about 7 kl away. A warm reception on arrival then it was a case of drop the bags off and out for a swim and chill out in the hammocks next to the beach. The remainder of the day was spent adjusting to Fiji time and slowly putting together a plan for our three week stay. Also treated to a spectacular distant view of a series of ... read more

Monday 27th February 7.075.4 Overcast Sky - 19c Had a good night’s sleep last night, probably due to the exertions of Sand boarding on the dunes yesterday. Not too many aches and pains though which is surprising. Anyway up in good time and had breakfast of toast and more toast. Supplies are getting very low now and we need to find a supermarket or may have to take to the hills in search of some wild Pig or Sheep with which to fill the larder. We left Whatawhiwhi behind and headed SE towards the Bay of Islands and another camp site. I wanted to keep the trip as short as possible today as i have just about had enough of driving. With in mind we only travelled for about an hour and a half before we ... read more

New Zealand 7 – Sunday 19 Feb 2012 More welcome sunshine greets us this morning. Had a good chat over breakfast with the Sheep farmer and a couple who turned up yesterday afternoon. These two had the tent to beat all tents; it unfolded into a five room bungalow with headroom, very smart. The down side is that it took an hour to put up. We said our farewells, exchanged emails and headed north hoping by the day’s end we would be in striking distance of the Coromandel Peninsula. By now it was 23 deg, very warm to be stuck in the car but we pressed on. From the site at Waiotahi Beach we took the scenic route through Whakatane and along the coast as much as we could passing the unfortunately named Te Puke and ... read more

New Zealand – Wk Six - North Island. Sunday 12th February. Today we leave the South and head to the North Island courtesy of the Inter Island Ferry at 13.30. Before we do we have time for one last look around Picton and its harbour. Picton is quite a nice little town with a long main street and a very well laid out leisure area running the length of the quay side. Part of this area contains the hull of the New Zealand Scow ‘Echo’. She is now a rather splendid coffee house with an interior hung with all sorts of memorabilia of her and other Scows days under sail. The NZ Scow is very similar to our Thames Barge in size and hull shape and plied there trade up and down the coasts of both ... read more

New Zealand – Wk 5 Monday 6th Feb A bright and sunny start to the day. Every intention today to go Salmon fishing so we are up and organised early and set off. On the way i detour along to Tata Beach to view the multiple landslides that have occurred along the route. These slips happened the week we arrived in NZ and were the result of torrential rain in the NW area of the Island that lasted for over a week. It’s no surprise really that these took place as the ground is made up of 90% sand. Apparently the road will not be repaired due to the many millions of Dollars it would cost so it is likely future access will have to be on foot or by boat. A real blow to the ... read more

February 10th 2012

Hopefully enclosed are some pictures from week 4 of our travels. They are taken in Hamner Springs, Kakoura Penninsula and Blenheim . The two pics of saddles is a referance to the pain inflicted on me by my saddle compared to the out and out luxury of Sue's saddle. I think its something to do with the genetic make up of the female backside, large! Blog 5 will hopefully be published on Sunday/ Monday depending on how long we are on the inter Island ferry. All the best, J and S... read more

New Zealand – Wk 4 Monday 30th Jan A comfortable night was had in our little wooden hut and we woke to a fine sunny morning. No hurry to get up today so morning tea was taken whilst in ones pit finishing off a very good book and talking to family on Skype. Once up and had breakfast we walked into Hanmer centre and found the Spa building along the main street. In we went and purchased entry to the Spa pools and half hour each in a private Sauna all for the sum of $63.00. We realised after we had left later in the day we were charged for only one of us, it should of been $126.00, oh well, Snooze you lose. The complex is made up of ten or so small to medium ... read more

New Zealand – Wk 3 Mon 23rd January 2012 After spending yesterday evening and night in our luxurious Motel accommodation it’s time once again to move on. The latter part of yesterday, Sunday was spent looking around the streets of Geraldine, eating Meat Pattie and Chips from the takeaway and publishing Wk 2s blog page, oh and also chatting to Family on Skype. Everything at home all seems ok which is nice to know. After a second look around the town, this time with the shops open we hit the scenic route intending to press on for approx 120 k and stop at the beginning of Arthurs Pass, this takes you across to the West Coast. We didn’t quite get that far, after detouring off like we do to check out a place called Peel Fore ... read more
