How sweet it is; after visiting Zion and Bryce, we went to Kanab, Utah for a couple of nights from which we made a day trip to the north rim of the Grand Canyon. I had originally planned to go to Jacob Lake Campground in Arizona, near the entrance to the north rim; a federal no-frills or hookups campground. But Nan and Shaddy voted me down on this part of the plan; they are still addicted to hookups and utilities. Last year, I purchased a Honda 3000 generator to provide power for such events, and today it sits unused in the toolbox in The Beast. But Nan and Shaddy are right; when they want all time, full time air conditioning, the generator would have to run continuously. I agree with them that the generator is best ... read more

#16 Grand Canyon, Vermillion Cliffs, French Neighbors and The Four Corners Sunday Sept 5-Mon. Sept 6: Every evening I mark an orange line on our atlas with the route we've taken, and I re-estimate our forward journey for time and possible sites. It had seemed best to leave visiting the Grand Canyon to the South Rim on our return trip, but today we decided to pop in to the North Rim for a quick “sticky beak”. The sheer magnitude of the Grand Canyon would make anyone gasp, including us of course. Then I saw the Grand Canyon Lodge, perched right on the edge, with a magnificent view from its sun porch and I quickly imagined that it would be a great place to wake up on the morning of our 36th wedding anniversary (½ of Phil's ... read more

GC - NR Day 2 I was up at 5 AM and after coffee took a bike ride to the lodge. I remembered the road being flat and looked forward to an invigorating ride, however as memories often do, the road was different and the ride was all down hill. Additionally, the closer to the rim, the lower the temp (37). So imagine a large navy blue wind-breaker thing, on a black bike, and black helmet hurtling down the road at 25+ mph hoping the brakes would hold, blinded by the tears in its eyes, and afraid to let go of the handle bars to wipe the tears streaming down its cheeks. Fortunately there was little traffic as all parts of the roadway were his domain. The road flattened near the lodge. After a sigh of ... read more

GC NR - Day 3 This mornings bike ride was shorter and sought out level roadways. This was also laundry and shower morning. We found the showers unique in that the shower heads were high pressure nozzles with no adjustment. The first shot felt like the top layer of skin was being peeled off, but as the screams fell on deaf ears, I realized the timer was running With clean bodies, we drove to Cape Royal. All of the roads in the park were under repair and this road was closed for the last day or so. The 20+ mile drive on a narrow roadway with several view points was a throwback drive with trees hanging over a roadway with no shoulders. Cape Royal did not disappoint. It was less hazy today and the big muddy ... read more

GC - NR Day 1 Our drive took us through the heart of Navajo Land - Kayenta and Tuba City. Northern AZ although desolate appearing has been a center of controversy as big biz is interested in the land because of mineral discoveries. The Navajo nation has allowed some access, but not nearly enough to satisfy the “greed merchants” (sorry greed merchants). The drive up the Kaibab plateau showed the vast difference between the 2 eco-zones that led to the creation of the Grand Canyon. A flat arid plain that seemed open to the eroding effects of any flow of water and the Kaibab plateau rising more than 5K feet above the plain. We got there about 4:30 MST as we change time zones gaining an hour, of course the sun did not realize AZ “don't ... read more

Woke up at 5.00 and drove up to Yavapi point to catch the sun rise at 5.47. Amazingly got there early but it was quite bright. It was quite cool so we were glad of our sweat shirts. The boys did not think it was that amazing but I got some good photos. We all went back to bed at 6.30 and we left the boys sleeping while Andy and I got up for our helicopter ride. As we were packing the car an Elk came walking by nibbling the vegetation. My camera went into overdrive again as i followed it into the forest and it found its mate. What luck, all I want to see now is a snake. Went and had breakfast in the lodge cafe first (Andy full American, me burritos with scrambled ... read more

We got to the National Forest Campground (Ten X) just 4 miles south of the Grand Canyon Nat'l Park late on Thursday afternoon. We had read that it rarely fills up, and there were a few spots left. We made camp, but as we were in the forest, no internet or tv...we were "roughing" it!! We did a lot of reading the evenings we stayed there, and found a DVD we hadn't watched yet :) We got up Friday morning and headed for the canyon. I took one picture and the camera battery went dead, so we headed to the Park HQ and asked if we could charge it for a bit. They have the only wifi in the area there, so we got coffee and surfed waiting for the battery to charge. Then we were ... read more

OK, so it took us 2 years (almost to the day), but Rich and I managed to get another extended hiking trip planned and completed. The trip started as a plan early last year, but busy schedules pushed the trip back to this Summer. Instead of climbing UP a big rock, then back down, we decided to climb DOWN a big hole, them climb back out. For so many different reasons, they are so completely different challenges. Like Mt. Whitney, we started by researching as much about the Grand Canyon as we could. We've both been to the canyon a few times before, but hiking through the canyon was something new to us both. The time of year (July) poses different challenges in that it's the peak of summer heat in the interior of the canyon, ... read more

July 23, 2010 Yesterday was the hairiest day of my trip. I made several consecutive bad decisions that led to a minor freak out. Of course, I had no way of knowing what was going to happen, but I probably should have just planned it a wee bit better. Bad decision #1—sleeping in until 11am, and not leaving Vegas until around 1pm. Bad decision #2- cancelling my camp reservations at the Grand Canyon Bad decision #3- still deciding to go the North Rim of the Grand Canyon Bad decision #4- not calculating my route to the North Rim prior to departure. Bad decision #5- still insisting we can make the Grand Canyon prior to dark. So all of these bad decisions were added to a bunch of unforeseen circumstances that I probably should have forseen given ... read more
