Hi Friends and Family, GRAND CANYON II Good Morning! We continued our adventure at The Grand Canyon on the way out to another canyon! Our hotel, The Grand Canyon Plaza Resort was right next to the IMAX (which I thought was rather amusing ‘cos why watch a 3D film about the canyon while we were but a few minutes away from the real life Grand Canyon) and The National Geographic Visitor Centre where we got maps and a ticket for entrance to the park the day before. The prices are pretty neat and very affordable as each National Park cost $25.00 per car and is good for 7 days or one could buy a yearly ticket that cost just $80.00. What a bargain. ‘Such a shame that we weren’t staying a little longer! The Resort was ... read more

Hi Friends and Family, As promised - the long awaited extra blog about the sunset. It was such a delicious sight and absolutely amazing. We had been advised about the best points to be on in order to get the advantage and we weren't the only ones! Cars were zooming and screeching all over the "highway" and the whole international community seemd to be converging at the same place. At the same time! We were all so excited and there was a lot of scrambling and leaping and jumping over small "rocks" in order to get to just the right position as the sunset took place for only about 15 minutes before a blanket of darkness would descend all over the Canyon. The sunlight was blazing and twinkling all at the same time! What a view ... read more

Down... We started from the rim at noon, in lots of snow. The South Kaibab Trail was partially packed, but the wind was blowing and mini-drifts covered sections compressed by earlier hikers. Down... It was well below freezing. As we crossed between ridges and valleys we went from calm and warm to bitter cold. "Are you cold?" "I'm good, on average. My back is wet and hot, my front is damp and cold, but over all just fine." Down... We passed lots of hikers coming up. My airy, jaunty cadence was in sharp contrast to their slow, focused steps. Down... We had mini-crampons but I never used them, the crunchy packed snow was mostly ice free, or the ice was at least partly dirty and not so slippery. Down... "How are you legs?" " What legs?" ... read more

16/08/10 After a slow start we bid farewell to Las Vegas and our money and drove towards the Grand Canyon. On the way we stopped at a typical American diner which was very interesting, we felt like we were in the movies. On the way we also stopped at the massive Hoover Dam. Unfortunately we didnt find any Transformers and it was extremely hot 110 F so we didnt hang around long. We arrived at Mather Campground within the Grand Canyon National Park just before sunset with enough light to set up camp but we had to cook dinner by firelight. Walking back from the toilet we came across a giant Elk in the middle ofhe road. It was built like a horse but with massive antlers. 17/08/10 Today we headed just up the road to ... read more

Today Mandy, Sandy, Rachel and I drove to the Grand Canyon. It was a good day. I had fun. Oh how I miss reading journal entries from my Grade 1's! So simple and yet so entertaining. Ok here goes, in all seriousness. It was Monday the first of November, the day after Halloween and whilst some of us had retired to bed at a reasonable time, others (not going to mention names but it starts with M and rhymes with Candy!) crawled in at hmmm around 6am?! So for some of us it was a tough morning to wake up, pack up and get on our way. We didn't arrive until about 8pm, a slight mis-calculation on our part of travel time. It was a beautiful drive, amazing in every way, although most of us were pretty ... read more

Hi Everyone- As you know, Korina and I had to get out of Bryce Canyon earlier yesterday morning so that we could avoid the snowstorm that decided to descend upon our whole day of planned site seeing. What a bummer. BUT we got to the Grand Canyon at around 1:30 and the weather cleared up to bright sunny skies so we were SO happy! Honestly, people can tell you how vast and incredible the Grand Canyon is, and you may see pictures, but you will never understand how insane it is unless you see it in person! It is definitely a place I would love to come back to and visit again...in fact Korina and I wanted to possibly camp in one of the campgrounds but it gets way too cold this time of year at ... read more

Got up on Sunday morning and looked out the window of our bedroom to see the most amazing view. When we arrived last night at 9pm the canyon was dark so we could not see a thing. The B&B is at the entrance to the canyon and the first formation, The Watchman, is in their backyard. Rising ~2500 feet above the town of Springdale, The Watchman blocks the sun from shining on the B&B until ~10am during the fall and winter months. We joined the other guests for breakfast. Larry was preparing omelettes, and Mychal prepared a fruit plate for Pam and a grape "thingy" for me (sliced grapes with a dollop of whipped cream sweetened with agave nectar and a sprinkle of raw sugar topped with a sprig of mint). while we enjoyed our breakfast ... read more

Its been a while since I updated this travelblog because we've been on the move and not near an internet. We love Arches and Canyonland, it was a really unusual place with strange rock formations and sensational mind blowing scenery. Canyonlands just showed the enormity of nature. We had beautiful weather there, quite hot and we stayed at an RV park that had a swimming pool, so it was lovely to cool off at the end of the day after all this site seeing. We were so pleased we stayed to see Canyonlands because the scenery was so incredible. We drove through the northern part of the park called "Island in the Sky", because we were actually on a mesa. We seemed to be making good time in our trip, so we decided to travel to ... read more
