17/08/10 After driving for hours we arrived at Bob's house at 2300. 18/08/10 Today was a relaxing day. We spent the day in the garden with Bob, we swam in his pool and watched the many hummingbirds feeding from the bird feeders. The little hummingbirds are really neat and sound like little helicopters. 19/08/10 Today we went to Disneyland 'the happiest place on earth' and joined in with the kids! The place was very well run and we didnt have to que for long. The rides were well done with lots of props. The rides were all fairly tame however. We watched the fireworks in the evening which were fantastic and a light and water show called Fantasia. 20/08/10 Today we had a late start then we drove to Hollywood Blvd and did the walk of ... read more

16/08/10 After a slow start we bid farewell to Las Vegas and our money and drove towards the Grand Canyon. On the way we stopped at a typical American diner which was very interesting, we felt like we were in the movies. On the way we also stopped at the massive Hoover Dam. Unfortunately we didnt find any Transformers and it was extremely hot 110 F so we didnt hang around long. We arrived at Mather Campground within the Grand Canyon National Park just before sunset with enough light to set up camp but we had to cook dinner by firelight. Walking back from the toilet we came across a giant Elk in the middle ofhe road. It was built like a horse but with massive antlers. 17/08/10 Today we headed just up the road to ... read more

13/08/10 We arrived in Las Vegas about 2130 and checked into the Mirage, it was very busy and noisy in Las Vegas being that it was a Friday night, it was amazing and overwhelming at the same time after spending a long day in the car. 14/08/10 Today we walked along the Strip and checked out different hotels such as Treasure Island with its Pirate Ship, as well as MGM Hotel where we went to the Rainforest Cafe which was full of pretend animals and trees, real fish and thunder and lightening storms every half hour. We then visited New York New York with its roller coaster and the Bellagio where we watched the massive fountain. We returned to our hotel and had a swim in the massive pool with waterfalls, we didnt check out the ... read more

11/08/10 After arriving in Yosemite National Park we headed to Crane Flat campground where we set up camp amoungst the trees. We had a food locker we had to use because of the bears and a fire pit which we cooked our dinner over and it was really yum and really fun. When it got dark it got really cold so it was quite a cold night. 12/08/10 Today we drove to Yosemite Valley village where you can park and catch free shuttles all over the valley. We caught a shuttle to Yosemite Falls and walked to the bas of the waterfall which is most impressive in spring when the ice is melting. From the falls we did the Yosemite Valley Floor walk which followed the river and had views of half dome and El Capitan, ... read more

09/08/10 We arrived in San Francisco in the early afternoon. After checking in to our hotel we caught the tram to Fishermans Wharf and Pier 39. We planned to book our tickets to Alcatraz but it was booked out to the following week. We wondered around the wharf and checked out Bubba Gumps Shrimp Co but had our dinner at the Seafood Market. Back at our hotel the floor was on such a significant slant we had to change which end of the bed we slept. 10/08/10 Today we walked through the city to the Painted Ladies which are basically five typical San Francisco style homes in a row that are nicely painted. I think they might feature at the start of Full House. From here we walked to the Golden Gate Park and checked out ... read more

08/08/10 Today we drove along the Coastal Highway 101 towards San Francisco. The hills and scenery was very dry and brown. The coastline was very rugged and rocky, and every now and then opened out into a bay with large, rugged, golden sandy beaches (such as Monterey Bay). Along the way we saw giant elephant seals and in the carpark there were squirrels sitting on peoples laps and eating peanuts. We stopped at Big Spur campground which was crazy busy with holiday makers and where we managed to get the last site. At $45 USD for a site it was the most expensive so far. The campground was a proper American campground, it was in the forest with pine trees, logs, fire pits and a river. 09/08/10 We carried on along the Coastal Highway and ... read more

Once through customs we caught the Dollars shuttle to pick up our rental car. We recieved a large Ford Focus, which was supposed to be there compact car! Once we had our car we drove to the nearest McDonalds for there free WiFi and booked a hotel cheap last minute in Hollywood. After being in Europe we had a massive room, with a king size bed and English TV! It was fantastic! 06/08/10 Today was spent at Universal Studios. It was busy but could have been busier. We did the Studio Tour which included the new 3D King Kong ride which was really neat. We also got to see the set of Desperate Housewives. The ... read more

THE NETHERLANDS 02/08/10 We crossed the boarder from Belgium to The Netherlands about midday and drove up through Zeeland to see if it reminded us of New Zealand. The answer is 'not really' however the wild coastline with wide sandy beaches is similar to parts of NZ such as the Coromandel. We crossed the Delta Project, the Netherlands attempt at taming the North Sea. If you wanted a photo or a look up close, other than driving over it, you had to enter a water park at 21 euro each so we didnt bother. I always knew that The Netherlands were flat and low but I was still extremely suprised at just how flat, and the amount of dykes everywhere and houses built into the dykes. We drove north and stopped at Rotterdam for the night. ... read more

LUXEMBURG 31/07/10 This morning we drove into Luxembourg City. They had a tidy pedestrian only town centre with a small palace and a fresh produce market. There wasnt much of huge interest in the city so after a quick look around we headed north through Luxembourg towards Brussels in Belgium. Before crossing the boarder we stopped in a small town for lunch called Esch-sur-sure. It was a cute little town situated on the bend in a river, therefore it had water on 3 sides. In the centre of the town up a cliff are the ruins of a castle (927). From there we drove to Brussels... read more
