Today is the day that I have been looking forward to for several weeks. Ever since we booked the Canyon River Adventure actually (and not just because it meant there was no danger of us deciding to hike to the bottom of the canyon and back up). As has become the norm, we were up with the sparrows and waiting patiently at the Grand Canyon airport. The Canyon River adventure is a whole day (6am to 6.30pm) trip which starts with a 45 minute scenic flight over the Canyon. Out of all the activities planned for the day, this is the one I was a bit nervous about - having visions of getting into a very small plane, hitting lots of turbulence and me involuntarily leaving my breakfast on the passenger beside me. Thankfully though, even ... read more

We woke up and ate breakfast early, then packed up and headed for the Grand Canyon. We laughed at all the publicity for the “World Famous Hole in the Rock”, it doubled as a petting zoo. We drove through a few small towns, that they apparently named by opening up a dictionary and pointing at random words: Blanding, Bluff, Mexican Hat, and Tuba City. We hit another small town, Monticello, where there were old men in cowboy hats talking under storefront awnings. I tried to take a picture, but it didn’t work out. So we turned around, I tried again, and it work out. We HAD to go passed them one more time to get going in the right direction, but guess what? Again, I didn’t get the picture. As we got closer to the ... read more

I am writing this blog update from probably the most bizzare location I will on the whole trip. I am lying on our bed in Room 215, Trade Winds Motel, Clinton, Oklahoma. Now you may think that there is nothing out of the ordinary about that, but take a read of this! From a website about quirky hotels and hotel rooms: "Some hotel rooms have a view. Others have mini-bars. Then there are those one of-kind rooms that actually have their own special history. Today it's possible to stay in the very places where something notable happened. True, in most cases it's something infamous, but nevertheless, pop culture and history aficionados still make the pilgrimages to these places so they can say, "I slept in the very room where (fill in the blank). Wow, if you ever have an opportunity to travel to the Grand Canyon, take it. It lives up to all they hype. As soon as you step to the edge, the canyon just opens up. It is hard to take it all in and the pictures are always different because the light changes. The train trip was great. We arrived at the depot and were entertained by a group of wildwest cowboys. The interesting part is that these cowboys traveled with us. We were entertained by a number of different singers and comedians on the train as well. At the end of the day we were 'robbed' by the same gang who entertained us in the morning. They rode up on horses, the train stopped, and they came through asking for money and other valuables. And ... read more

Geo: 36.0262, -112.136We checked in late in the afternoon and went and had dinner. After dinner, we went over towards Bright Angel Lodge for our first glimpse of the canyon. I led Stacy to the edge of the canyon where there was no fence. She looked up and just about freaked out. We hiked around for a little while, waiting for sunset to come so we could get some good photos. We saw a pair of Condors flying around the cliffs. They are huge, wingspans over 10 feet. The next morning, we got breakfast and headed out toward the west side of the park by bus to take in all of the sites there. We hiked around for a few hours, took the bus back, went back to our room for a quick nap, then showers ... read more

The day after Russ' birthday we reluctantly checked out of our comfortable hotel and took a cab out to Las Vegas Airport. There we were dropped off at the Rental Car Centre and picked up our car which we were going to drive all the way to Dallas Fort Worth Airport. Following the directions of the Budget staff, we promptly got lost, and drove around a little before finding our way onto the highway!!!!! Our plan had been to drive across the Hoover Dam but they are in the process of building a new bridge. In Vegas we had been warned of 2 hours of standing traffic in the road works so we went the long way round. That involved heading South from Boulder City into the sunshine state of California. It was a long way ... read more

about the Grand Canyon (from San Diego on 23 May) I think I will just do some snaps on this - too long after the event to write. Very glad I did the plane fight out there, rather than bus - the bus is a 13 hr day to get there and back and hotel pickups at 6.30am or so! - the plane flight was a mere 11.15am pickup to leave from Boulder City airport at 12.30. Small plane with about 15 seats and large under wing windows - and being on my own got a solo side seat. Glad I did not have any breakfast as small planes do "swing" a little. Most of the flight over featureless landscape so when bits of canyon country hove into view it was a bit more interesting. The ... read more

Hi All, This morning we drove over Hoover Dam, the security checkpoint guard recognized us from yesterday. They had to search vehicles and since we have the car topper, we had to open it up and let them look in it. In Arizona we thought that the landscape would be like southern California, but we saw many wildflowers and cactus that was different than we had ever seen. It was neat to watch, till we started changing elevations. We saw lots of grass plains that were brown and dead. Then we went hours in pine forests, some of the forests had a mixture of trees, but some were dry and dead. We had lunch in Seligman and took pictures of Route 66, (our first encounter.) We also thought that the Grand Canyon was desert on top, ... read more

Grand Canyon Monday, April 5th, we are on our way to Grand Canyon National Park, traveling Route 64 into the Park from Flagstaff. It is cold and dangerous wind warnings are up! Paul is driving, both hands on the wheel, I am catching glimpses of immense structures and deep fissures to the right side of my window when I dare to look at anything other than the uphill battle in front of us. Joey and Connor, riding with us think this is a great deal of fun... Joe and Stacey, following behind, are watching the RV sway back and forth. We reach the park safely - Whew! Trailer village in the Park itself is a lovely campground and shuttle buses take you wherever you want to go. We had dinner and breakfast in the Bright Angel ... read more
