We woke up early for our big day. Our things were quickly packed, and since the parking lot was a little less scary in the day, we decided to eat the continental breakfast. The waffle iron worked, but there wasn’t much else. A nice French Canadian family ate next to us—asking “Where is the milk?” and “Have you seen the tea?”. We wished them well and headed to Yosemite. The easy drive got us to the southern entrance before 10 AM. We pulled up to the Ranger Station and were informed that the Muir Grove was packed too full and that the park roads were under serious construction. Zack drove us through the winding, torn-up roads and we sat in traffic for a long time before reaching the Valley floor. As we got close, we went ... read more

We woke up bright and early at 6:30 for 2 reasons; to get a good round of fishing in before the 2-day California license expired, and to see the trees as soon as possible. We completed our normal routine of Jenn cooking breakfast while I broke down the tent and got everything packed up. One break in the routine was a wild animal about 20-yards from us; a mule deer with a medium rack of antlers chewing on some grass. None of the other campers had seen it (even though he was in their site), but I pointed it out to Jenn, and took the super-zoom camera over to snag a few pictures. Then, while Jenn washed dishes, I got the fishing gear rigged up. The fly-rod already had a dry-fly on it (which had drawn ... read more

We got up in the morning and had coffee with Jimin before heading out to the next destination. Zack had seen a special on the Food Network about Pink’s Hot Dog Stand years ago, and was delighted to learn that it was not that far from Koreatown. We decided to get one of these famous meat products, so we committed ourselves to standing in the 45-minute line. The wait wasn’t too bad, it was the deciding part that was tough. There are all kinds of specialty dogs, named after the people who have eaten them. Martha Stewart, Ozzie Osbourne, the Today Show, and Rosie O’Donnell, were just some of the options-some of them included multiple hot dogs. Zack got a bacon chili dog, I got a Chicago Polish Sausage. The food was good, not mind-blowing (it’s ... read more

Today Jimin was off work so we decided to go out exploring together. We met Sarah Brockman (another Belmontee in LA) for breakfast at Norm’s diner. The place was packed and a waitress who was running through the restaurant, brought our food to us quickly. The thing to get is the “loaded hashbrowns”. I was too distracted by foods to put syrup on to see that gem on the menu. Another quirk about Norm’s is that they bring you fried jalapenos at the end of the meal. No one really knew what to do with them, so we had a bite and left the rest on the plate. After paying the bill, we said goodbye to Sarah and made plans to see her again soon when we all return to Nashville. Jimin suggested a trip to ... read more

Jimin was at work and we woke up late. We got dressed and hit the town. We turned left onto Santa Monica Blvd and just started driving. We passed through Beverly Hills and blasted WEEZER! The stores were incredible-we passed a store completely dedicated to caviar! We continued driving toward the ocean. The traffic got thicker the closer we got so we pulled off at the public library. We paid the meter and went for a walk. We stopped at the Goodwill, where Zack picked up 2 T-shirts for $4. This was the craziest goodwill ever. All the clothes were Lucky Brank, Ed Hardy, and American Apparel. Haha-I guess we aren’t in Nashville anymore. We continued walking passed a lot more ritzy shops and finally saw the ocean. We made it to the Pacific! The Santa ... read more

We got up (late) and I called the front desk to see if we could get a late check-out. Having bought us an extra hour, we sat down to have breakfast and read the paper one more time. We had done most of the packing the night before, so we loaded up our cooler with the free ice we had been making all week and checked out. On the way out of town we stopped and went bowling. In the sovereign Indian nation of Morongo, you get a free game of bowling with every gas purchase of $5 or more! I put $10 in on my credit card and got a receipt. Zack finished filling up and got his own receipt. I should mention, that when I went inside to prepay, the gas station doubled as ... read more

The next day greeted us with that same vicious heat. We were in the pool before 11 am and thankfully there were less people. We stood still in the water, so as not to accidently exercise, and tried to keep cool, but it wasn’t working. We went back to the room for lunch. Zack prepared delicious grilled chicken avocado sandwiches and Ralph’s French loaf. Ralph’s has the most amazing bakery bread! After lunch, we napped. For 2 hours we slept! In the middle of the day! We got up and decided to go to Joshua Tree National Park to see in the night sky. So at 6:00, we ventured out to the local Sam’s Club, our “home away from home”. We always go there on our vacations for discount pizza and giant sodas and the strange ... read more

This was a particularily interesting Monday, in that we actually left the hotel room! We went to Ralph’s to get some more groceries and made some chicken pasta for lunch. Then we got sucked into watching Get Smart on HBO. It was actually very funny. After lounging around a little longer then necessary we decided to go to the Palm Springs Arial Tramway. We drove about 30 minutes from Palm Desert to the outskirts of Palm Springs, passed several fancy resorts, and turned up a mountain. We climbed up the 2500 feet at about 30 mph and reached the base of the tram. We splurged for the “Ride N’ Dine” ticket that got us a ride up and dinner in the café. We loaded onto the first tram car that arrived and headed up. The ... read more

Another late morning arrived and we enjoyed our coffee and cereal while watching a PBS special on how to find Supertwisters. Did you know a tornado can create winds of over 300 mph? The vicious heat prompted us to find something to do inside. We drove around the city of Palm Desert and found an entire strip mall of thrift stores! It was exciting, but pricey. We left with a few records to add to our collection and hunger that could only be satisfied with fish tacos. We went in search of Rubio’s and found on within a half mile. Four fish tacos, chips, a coke with lime, and a cup of pintos for $12.00! The food was delicious! Seriously, the best fish tacos we have ever eaten, and we live in little Mexico! We spent ... read more

Well, we won’t have much to blog about for this day…or the next 6, but we’ll try to keep you up to date. We woke up at about 11 and made some coffee and breakfast. Jenn lived her dream of doing the USA Today crossword, while Zack lived his dream of drinking coffee and reading the financial reports (not that he understands them!). With a second cup of coffee, we watched the third Harry Potter movie in bed—in the middle of the day! At about 3:30 we cooked a quick lunch of spaghetti with meat sauce for Jenn and more tacos for Zack. The pool scene was calling, so we got suited up and walked down. The pool next to us is labeled “SHHH! QUIET POOL!”—the drunk crew ranging from 25-55 years old, with an ... read more
