We left the fun-loving Las Vegas on Tuesday morning, with our stomachs full from yet another (all you can imagine) breakfast buffet, although, i think that we also left a small piece of our heart there as well. But it was time to move on and back to our trusty tent. It was going to be a long drive to the Grand Canyon as we also wanted to make a stop at Hoover Dam. It was all going well til we got stuck in traffic close to Hoover Dam - they are constructing a new bridge to bypass the tourists viewing Hoover Dam, and today they were blasting. So i think we were stuck for close to an hour. But this did not dampen our spirits and we got to enjoy a good stretch of the ... read more

The last time I've visited here was when I was about 12, maybe 13 years old with my parents and one was in a wheelchair so obviously all I did was hung around the touristy side. Without any conditioning whatsoever, I took the opportunity of a lifetime. My new friend, Shelly who I met through couchsurfing had invited me for a weekend trip down at the bottom in Phantom Ranch on the South Rim. Apparently, she knew someone who worked at the Ranch and hooked us up with a loft to sleep in the employee cabin. She invited another friend of a friend, Brian and his dad. Brian drove and we all stayed in a hotel on a late Thursday night. Early the next morning we drove off to Grand Canyon to catch the bus ride ... read more

You cannot see the Grand Canyon in one view, as if it were a changeless spectacle from which a curtain might be lifted, but to see it you have to toil from month to month through its labyrinths. -- John Wesley Powell I'm not sure I want to toil for months, but in the winter it's actually not that bad. We arrived at the Grand Canyon to find quite a bit of snow and ice on the ground. Kevin wanted to hike down into the Canyon, so we set out on Kaibob Trail which travels down one of the ridges to a great lookout point. We only went a very short distance down into the canyon, but the views were absolutely gorgeous, and different than viewing it from the rim. We saw people navigating the snow ... read more

During the planning stage for the trip Noah postulated the idea of taking a gander at the Grand Canyon. The 16th of February found Noah steering us North out of Phoenix on I-17. The day was warm enough to run the Camry’s A/C. We entered a long area of hilly desert populated with thousands of Seguaro cactus. Just south of Sedona we hit a section of road that would either tax your driving skills or the thickness of your brake pads. Steep winding grades plunging into beautiful sun filled valleys. We were surprised at the amount of snow on the ground. I thought that it must be the remains of the blizzard that had rolled through the area some three weeks ago. By the time we reached Flagstaff the temperatures were in the low 40’s. We ... read more

Our first day

On our second day in Las Vegas we decided to take a trip out to the Grand Canyon. Seeing as though it is so close (well, compared to many other places we are visiting) it made sense to visit whilst we were here. It was an early start and we were off and away on the bus at 6am. We took a trip down the strip picking the other people up (only 12 in total which meant two seats each on the bus) and we then headed south east towards Arizona. To what I think was the north we could see the Spring Mountains and Mount Charlston (where you can ski, just over an hour form the strip). We began heading out of Nevada and we started heading towards the Grand Canyon which would eventually take ... read more

Saturday November 21st to Friday December 11th, 2009. Quite what would possess someone who loathes even the mere thought of sitting behind a steering wheel to drive 1200 miles in three days is anyone’s guess. A quest for adventure ? Most likely, I’m still trying to fathom it out myself to be honest but not wanting to miss the opportunity that the long Thanksgiving weekend had afforded whilst unbelievably turning down offers of not one but two turkey dinners in the process that was exactly what I did, proposed destination the world’s biggest hole in the ground, The Grand Canyon. With tickets for Tiesto’s LA concert on the Saturday night already purchased I had just three days. The plan, if it could be described as such was to motor out to the Canyon in one long ... read more

So here they are.....Mr & Mrs Turner - CONGRATULATIONS! There are more professional photographs but we wanted to get something online quickly. The Cowboys and Cowgirls who work on this ranch were fabulous, they were warm and hospitable and did everything they could to make this a warm and special day....despite the snow and freezing temperatures. The ceremony was administered by a minister from Las Vegas who was flown out especially and he was a hoot. Full of character and funny stories. The Wedding took place in the Diamond Bar in front of a warm fire - it was beautiful and quite homely. Karen was serenaded in by Mike the Cowboy and his geetarrrr and I think that she looked stunning. Frances was extremely cute in her Princess Daisy outfit but refused to keep it on ... read more

We did our day trip to the Grand Canyon today. We left around 7:45AM and returned around 4:45PM. We watched the weather before we left and saw that the temperature was predicted to be 20-30 degrees colder than Sedona. We also saw that they were calling for rain in northern Arizona but I guess we thought (hoped!) that wouldn't pertain to us or the Grand Canyon.....we were wrong. We drove out of Sedona up through Oak Creek Canyon to Flagstaff and entered the Grand Canyon through the South Entrance. We saw no wildlife on our trip to the Grand Canyon but as soon as we entered the park there were a few moose or elk (not sure which) right off the road. I have no idea why but Adam would not stop in the middle of ... read more
