October 18, 2009 Today John dropped Bill off at The Canyon…that’s what you call it if you’re visiting and you’re really cool…The Canyon…”Meet you at the Canyon”…”We were just over at the Canyon”…”Don’t fall in The Canyon”… Bill spent the morning exploring while the rest of us slept in. John and I went to the National Geographic Visitor Center and watched the IMAX film of The Canyon…it was really incredible! Donna waited for us in the center because those types of films make her head crazy. Afterwards we picked up sandwiches and set off to meet Bill. He had his telescope set up on the rim… (again if you’re cool) and we could see the lodge on the North rim…amazing. We had decided before hand to “dine” on the porch of El Tovar, one of ... read more

October 17, 2009 Before today’s itinerary, a word about the little town we stayed in last night…It turns out that John-O LOVED the hotel and the town!!! He spoke to any person with a pulse, made friends with some winos in the next room and sat on the stoop in a plastic lounge chair (the building is made of cement blocks) drinking his cocktail and smoking a stogie…He thought he was the mayor!!!! And all this while poor Donna is hanging wet laundry all over their room in hopes that it would dry!!! Anyway…we left the “little piece of heaven” at about 9:30 this morning. We did a bit of shopping in town…it really is a great spot. There is so much Route 66 memorabilia (Dick…it’s George Maharis) that if you’re old enough…I’m not …really…to remember ... read more

After a day of exploring the Painted Desert, Meteor Crater, and other areas of Arizona wilderness, we woke up and headed to the Grand Canyon. We had both been looking forward to reaching this part of our trip as it was a major item on our list of to-do’s. This was a place both of us had always wanted to see and it was thrilling to finally have the opportunity. We planned on taking our backpacks down to the bottom and camp on the banks of the Colorado River. I had been keeping the wounds on my ankles and back clean with Neosporin and new gauze everyday and hoped they were up to the task. As we drove into the park, wildfires were burning throughout the woods all around the outside of the canyon. It was ... read more

Last day before I start my LONG drive home. I went to the Grand Canyon this morning. What a place!!!! It is huge and overwhelming how large it is. The shapes that are present in the canyon were awesome and to find out that the canyon averages about 10 miles across is stunning. I spent several hours at the park and enjoyed seeing it. As I was leaving, I heard the call of a bull elk. It was pretty close to where I was parked. A great way to end a visit to the Grand Canyon. I started my trip home. I did decide to stop at the Petrified Forest and Painted Desert National Park. The logs were so very colorful and it was cool to see the way they looked. They also have a bunch ... read more

Grand Canyon - North Rim - Part 2 KC and I spent the rest of the day relaxing, taking photos at the lodge and Bright Angle Point, while visiting Betty spots. We returned to Cape Royal to take sunset. I walked out to the point, but stopped at Angel's Window and it was different. I caught the odor of sage and knew our dedication was at work. I went to Cape Royal Point as Betty and I had done before. I left the secure area to get open shots of the sunset and the canyon and could still hear Betty “you are to old to be doing that”. Yes this was likely true, but her warning had little impact and I know she reveled in my joy and excitement. A family of 3 (mother, daughter, husband) ... read more

We arrived at the Grand Canyon today. We actually had to drive through part of the national park before getting to our hotel. We arrived at our hotel at around 2 or 3pm. It was a little confusing to figure out what time it is. It says that we're in Mountain Time, but we have the same time as California and Nevada, which is Pacific Time. One thing that was unexpected was how cool it was there. It was only about 70 degrees there. We both just always thought that it would be hot, but it wasn't. And there was a lot more greenery than we expected. We took one of the free shuttles out to one of the lookouts that cars aren't allowed to drive to, and we also walked along the Rim Trail as ... read more

Today we spent pretty much all day at Grand Canyon National Park. We rode one of the shuttles to an area where cars aren't allowed to drive to, and hiked a little bit on the rim and took some pictures. It was a little bit warmer today than yesterday, and the sky was nice and clear. It was a beautiful day, but not so good for picture taking. Plus, after awhile, no matter what angle you look at the Grand Canyon, it all looks the same and pictures just start to seem redundant. We had lunch at one of the lodges there, and decided to rest until closer to sunset, when the light would be better. Sunset was just as nice as yesterday, and the light was just amazing. Our sunsets at home just don't seem ... read more

Grand Canyon - North Rim - Part 1 This is one of my favorite National Parks (NP) and the North Rim in particular. The main reason is there are fewer people, fewer attractions (1), fewer hotels (1), fewer restaurants (1), fewer tour buses, and more emphasis on the canyon. It is at least 8,000 feet throughout the north rim which results in more cold weather, more snow, and being shutdown from the end of October until May/June depending on snow depth. Most people visit the South Rim since it is more developed with easier access from Williams and Flagstaff, AZ along I-40. Betty and I visited the both rims many time either camping or hotel/motel/lodge. We were here with my sister once at each rim (OK I threaten them to go north or we would be ... read more

August, 15 - August 16 Leaving Las Vegas behind we headed out into the desert to visit the Grand Canyon. It was surreal heading back out into the wilderness after the hype and buzz of the city and soon we were on the long and mostly empty roads sandwiched between the Joshua Tree-dotted desert. We also managed to incorporate a drive along the iconic Route 66 and stopped for food at the Roadkill Café - ‘you kill it, we cook it’. Tempting as flat coyote sounds we opted for soup. The drive to the Canyon’s south rim was a long one but we were in luck as that weekend was the last free entry weekend of the summer. We’ve all seen images of the Grand Canyon, remember the final scene in Thelma and Louise? In real ... read more
