After such a day yesterday of highlights and pushing adrenaline, today was a much needed day off the road. Of course, we didn’t quite expect it to snow! We started out with a quick, cold walk on the Rim Trail to the geology museum but it became a sprint as the white stuff started to come down about half way there. I kept thinking I was seeing things but no, it was definitely snow, followed by sleet, hail, rain, sunshine, etc. – apparently the spring weather at the Grand Canyon follows the Maine saying “If you don’t like the weather, wait 15 minutes.” Seeing the majesty of the canyon from this vantage point is equally wonderful but I think I would have missed a lot without the experience of seeing it from the river. Some hiking, ... read more
Yes, it really snowed and hailed

Peach Springs, AZ to Grand Canyon National Park, AZ – 144 miles Total miles: 932 40 years ago, in 1971, Steve and his cousin Larry Oster did a week long rafting trip down the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon and to this day he still thinks of it as one his greatest adventures. After we married, and in a moment of his humor, he proclaimed that our marriage would be perfect when I rafted the Colorado with him. Well, 37 years later, we finally have the perfect marriage. The morning started early, sunny and a bit windy, with an hour long drive down an unpaved road to the Diamond Creek put in on the Colorado River. Our driver’s name was Cruz and he was aptly named for his driving skills! We met our fellow travelers ... read more

Geo: 36.0262, -112.13628th April - Today we head for the Grand Canyon and the weather is sunny but cool as we are still at a high altitude. We do a 3 hour run to Williams which is another R66 town and here we drop into Bearazona which is a drive through wildlife park. Before entering the bear enclosure we are warned that they like to take a swipe at side mirrors and keep them as souvenirs. Luckily none attempt to do this. On leaving the park we head to downtown for some lunch at the R66 diner which has quite an atmosphere and have baby back ribs and a cold beer, (nice lunch). Now we are off to the Grand Canyon which is an hour off the I40. We arrive around 3.00pm and check into our ... read more

My alarm went off at 3.25am, but because I hadn’t taken into account the hour’s change into Mountain time, it was actually 2.25am. When the right time did come, we loaded up the OJ and doughnuts and headed back to the Canyon for the sunrise. There was heavy cloud presence which was threatening our viewing, but we still headed back with the hope we were still going to see something. Like the previous evening, Todd led us to another ledge just off the path, where everyone stayed, but Todd, Jess and I climbed down to a lower ledge and sat there for ages waiting and having some individual ‘me’ time. Just like Dead Horse Point, it was so peaceful. Sadly the cloud presence hindered any attempts to witness a sunrise, so the three of us finally ... read more

Another tremendous view!

We all woke up extra early as Carlos was taking us to experience a sunset viewing in Monument Valley. We headed to a open plain on the Valley, and looked on towards The Totem Pole and waited for the sun to make an appearance. As we did, Graham was standing in his sleeping bag and was standing at the front of where the group was standing. Todd dared G to tackle him from behind, and what happened was one of those true special moments that make you realise what a special group you have found yourself in. G took several steps back and gave himself a big enough run up to then rugby tackle Graham from behind, sending them both crashing to the sand below. Everyone burst into laughter, and once Graham realised what had happened, ... read more

When we entered Arizona we recalled the saying, “Whoever says the world is over-crowded has never driven across the United States.” I waited to hear that wild west whistle, but not even that was to be heard. Eventually we came across scattered worn-down trailers with a few Rvs or pick-up trucks by them. A few wild and thin horses grazed along the highways outside of wire fences. We noticed that most of the people we saw seemed to be of Native American descent and wondered if the area we were driving through was an Indian Reservation. Eventually we came upon parts of the highway that were dotted with roadside stands selling Navajo crafts, jewelry, and pottery. Eventually we left the warmer desert lands and rose into the higher grounds of the Grand Canyon. What a surprise ... read more

We stopped at Flagstaff to catch up with blogging etc and then we visited an area of Indian ruins called Walnut Canyon. This whole canyon was once a triving community about 1100s and all the dwellings were built into the cliffs. It was quite a cool place that we spent an hour or two just wandering looking at ruins etc and then headed off to Mathers campground at the Grand Canyon late in the afternoon. We decided to forgo a quick peek at the Canyon and did house hold chores like washing and showering then made dinner in the dark which judging by the one pot wonder that I turned out was probably the best way to eat dinner. There is something quite romantic about eating a mixture of tuna, rice and veggies huddled over table ... read more

We were up early the morning after the wedding to go to the Grand Canyon. Probably not a good idea but unfortunately the only day in Las Vegas where we had 15 hours to spare! Everybody else had done the 4 hour helicopter ride, and thoroughly enjoyed it, but we were travelling on a budget! Also we had read that the helicopters cannot fly over the main part of the Grand Canyon. This area had been declared a ‘no fly zone’ due to noise pollution issues. Ten in the van, and breakfast at McDonalds before we drove to the massive wall behind the Hoover Dam. A road bridge above the wall had recently been opened and we walked across it to view the dam before crossing it in the van The bridge appears to be on ... read more

Old Madam’s Grand Canyon There will never be adequate words for the Grand Canyon. “Monstrous, amazing, big-ass scary and overwhelming” come pitifully close. I live 90 minutes from the Grand Canyon and last year I was repeatedly asked, “have you been in it?” So I had to go. Now the Big C and I have an intense intimate relationship. The darkest rocks at the bottom call-come on down. It’s a combo creator and destroyer, lover and taskmaster. And worth it. I prefer a day in the woods or on water to anything else. Any day in the forest is a good one. So to begin my Canyon Adventures I started at my namesake “Honan Point” on the North Rim, west end of the Walhalla Plateau. The North is wilder: higher, colder, has fewer people and big ... read more

Hi Friends and Family, THE GRAND CANYON I We arrived at our hotel – „The Grand Canyon Plaza Resort“ in the evening and after checking-in, went straight for the dinning room ‘cos we were very, very hungry! We were really looking forward to experiencing everything that The Grand Canyon had to offer. The hotel was really nice and we had a deluxe room which backed out near to the indoor spa area and had two vanity areas, a huge flat screen TV, a terrace backing into the wintergarten and free WIFI! It would be so lovely in the summer. You could see that it really was low-season as there were very few guests and most were Japanese tourists, three American families and ourselves! I had been a little sceptical of this hotel as this wasn’t our ... read more
