I am sitting here in a Mexican internet shop with many people around me; let’s just say that the smell in here isn’t the best. Everyone must have eaten some Taco’s or bad burritos. Never the less it is internet that I can use for the moment, and its only 2 $. Here is the latest update. We have all passed our Safety tests and now are well on our way to be seamen, hahaha get your minds out of the gutter´. We have seen some great sights as the past trips through Catalina and Ensenada have been with great weather. Today we went on a tour as it was the first day in 16 days that we have had off so I’m exhausted yet excited. The group of us went to the Fox studios on ... read more

Well folks, I'm back at Penn, but I had one last batch of pictures. We spent Friday in the city proper of Guadalajara, at a grand colonial building (the last building built by Spain in all of Mexico, or so Leno tells us) and at the mercado next door (largest indoor one in Latin America, again via Leno). The colonial building was originally intended to be an orphanage, but now the greatest attraction is a series of murals on the inside of the dome. They were really spectacular. We then headed over to the mercado, which is quite an experience. Much of one side of it is dedicated to leather goods: manta ray, ostrich, and python cowboy boots; custom saddles; and, my personal favorite, knock-off purses. It seems my bargaining skills from India came in handy, ... read more

Mahahual is definitely being groomed for a future as just another jump off point for fat tourists looking to blow a few bucks on pink tequila and bad tank tops. Some investor has purchased the port and pier and sealed it off from "real mexico" and painted it bright colors and pumped in music that will make the middle aged tap their feet and show some white skin. So, we jump off the ship...the first to do this in a while we came to find out. We were the talk of the town and from the first minute security was eye'n us. Through the throngs of beer guts and weekend texan party animals stood us with our packs... far too weighed down for a 3 hour excursion. Security stopped us at the ATM, the shops, the ... read more

I LOVE TRAVELING. (anyone have any questions so far? haha) From the 19th to the 26th, I was traveling with the fabulous exchange students of Rotary District 4150. First took a bus to Tepic from Vallarta, joined up with the students there, took a bus to Mazatlan where we met up with ALL the exchange students going (53). We hung around until 11 at night, and arriving at about noon, we had a lot of time to kill. The Rotary Club was hosting a International food event, and the exchange students from Maz. made food from there country. And I had sushi(second time in my life) from Aya, Yuki and Yuka, and this time I actually liked it! So after some hanging out at the beach we left for Las Mochis on a bus with a ... read more

i find it funny that i came so far from home and the place i am enjoying the most is the location with the most similarities minus the snow. i have had some great little adventures in the last week, staying in san cristobal for the most of it. although I went to palenque for 2 nights. i was going to go to tulum, because it is warm there but i found myself drawn back here. As well i went to cañon de la sol, and several waterfalls; agua azul, agua clara, & misol-ha. They were amazing! on the day that i went to the cañon i accidentaly left my camera on the bus, Oh My God!! i freaked out and questioned what i would do with out it....it felt like the end of the world! ... read more

North America » Mexico » Quintana Roo » Tulum November 25th 2006

After the trials and tribulations of Playa Del Carmen, it is good o hit the road again (not the sidewalk) and get to Tulum. Again the photos will have to wait, though for those too impatient I´m sure a quick search of travelblog.org would reveal any number of Tulum pictures. Tulum is just a short bus ride, or in this case a short collectivo ride south from Playa Del Carmen. Hooked up with two americans, Marty and Keith, on the way to the collectivo departure point. Had met Marty up in the hostel in Cancun; hadn´t met Keith before. Ended up sat next to Keith on the collectivo and got chatting about some of my travel plans ahead. He outlined a number of destinations in Thailand I might look out when I´m there. When I got ... read more

This blog by Jacqui: ....so we all know that Carolyn and Tom met us in rock-star style at Villa Del Sol (see previous journal entry)... therefore, our departure for Troncones was delayed somewhat but we arrive to La Canalita, our awesome tranquil bungalow, for sunset and dinner at Huachinango's. We explore the local beaches around Troncones, I get my first surfing lesson from surfing maestro Thomas on a soft long board. We paddle out into the BIG choppy surf and I ride one wave on stomach (yeah!), miss a few more and then plunge vertically down the face of a 4 foot (felt like 10 feet!) wave almost to my death... decide to call it a day... Tom stays out but finds better waves in Nexpa as Troncones beach is choppy and the undertow is too ... read more

A couple of days ago, Dad and I and Leno drove about an hour outside of Guadalajara to Tequila, of the alcoholic beverage fame. There were agave plants everywhere, and huge canyons and volcanoes, and we went to a hacienda to see how they produce tequila. Other than that, we had a great seafood meal at a restaurant overlooking the valley, and headed home for afternoon siesta. Besides producing tequila, there's not much in that area other than a lot of dust and some tourist shops, but the region made for great photography, so here's some photos. ... read more

I woke up on Wednesday morning, cold as fuck. I recently purchased a heater to heat my large uninsulated room. The heater successfully warms my toes when I place them right over the radiator. My immediate thought was ¨I need to get out of town, fast.¨The last time I made such a drastic claim was when I was being bombarded with coconuts on the mean streets of Lagos, Portugal, true story (semi-true story.) Pachuca was exactly 20º (celsius) colder than I like it. If it was this cold inside, I could only imagine how cold it would be outside. You guessed it, I imagined it would be COLDER. My water also wasn´t working. Again. Boo. I went to school, just about ready to quit my life in Mexico. When I realized I HAD OPTIONS. I decided ... read more
