It was another sunny day in Mexico and the temperature was mild, thus made sightseeing very pleasant. Coyoacan- 'Places of Coyotes' in the Nahuatl language, is in the southern end of Mexico City. It is quite close to Veronica's home. She used to hang out here when she was living in Mexico. It is also here, in Church of San Juan Bautista, where her parent got married. Coyoacan has a bit of everything to offer its visitors- the narrow colonial-era streets, cantina, plazas, parks, cafes, book stores, market and etc. All these has contributed to its lively yet relaxed atmosphere. After the Spanish conquest Hernán Cortés made his residence here, which is now a opened for visitors. It was also home to Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, and Leon Trotsky. The houses they lived in are ... read more

Coyoacan market is the heart of the commercial life of this colonia area. It offers an insight of mexican tradition to all visitors. You will find typical Mexican handicraft, clothes and fresh food ingredients here. I was drawn to the regional cuisine that they sold here at the food stalls, and was very tempted to try their food, but the thought of possibly getting stomach upset had kept me at bay. We then came to a Mole store, selling brown Mole powder or paste. I remembered trying out this dark brown Mole sauce in Vero's house party. At that time, I had no idea what Mole is about. I was then told that it has a very distintive flavour with subtle hint of chocolate. The word "Mole" comes from the Aztec word "Molli," meaning "concoction", "stew" ... read more

Day 7 Villa Corona, trailer park Chimulco and the hotsprings Highlights: hotsprings; Lake Chapala; molcajetes We woke up to a cool but beautiful morning and the tradition is, before breakfast you head to the hotsprings, so we went, no need to convince us. I was a little worried about the temperature as l like my waters to be bathtub temperature especially when the outdoor temp is still very chilly but after I poked my toes into the water to let Carlo know it was actually really really warm, we were in the pool within a sec. The hotsprings are part of a big water park but instead of just tab water in all the pools, waterslides, tube rivers, etc the park uses the underground hotsprings for the water, how fantastic is that. Plus the hotsprings are ... read more

Hola amigos Hope all's well with everyone and the Londoners amonst you avoided the tornado. Tornados in London - what's going on? When it became time to leave Mexico City, I had a choice of venues. Normally, I would have gone to Oaxaca City, a historic market town 4 hours'drive away which is highly recommended by most guides. For the last few months, there has been a teachers´strike there. When I was at school, a teachers´strike was usually a cause for celebration as we might have got an afternoon away from school. In Oaxaca, the teachers´strike has led to serious rioting, petrol bombs and, sadly, a number of deaths. Let's not go there then ey? So, I decided to head for San Cristobal de las Casas. A mere 16 hours by coach. Now, I had a ... read more

Well I have been very busy. It is midterms week in school. I just finished writing 5 pages about Hitler and his Nazis and another 10 about mexican traditions. It was SO much work. But I finished. Today I took an examen in one of my computer classes. It was pretty easy. I got 10/10 points. This weekend I have the fun task of making a powerpoint about the Charles River...shouldn't be too bad. Oh and it has been conformed...I am definitely singing "Feliz Navidad" ALONE...duh duh duh..so if any of you happen to be in Mexico on the Col San Juan December 12th let me know because I can give you the address. Or just wishing me well would work too. I am terrified, because I kind of can't sing! Here goes nothing right... Love, ... read more

As trailed in the Lonely Planet, this really is the perfect chill-out spot. Long, lazy days. Not a great deal to do. There is one tour to do: an excellent snorkelling, rock jumping, turtle/dolphin spotting trip hopping between four different beaches on a outboard motor launch. Did the tour yesterday and had a fantastic time. Loads of italians, three Danish, some French and three Brits. A really relaxed group, with really entertaining and likeable guides - organised by Profund Azul, with offices in Zipolite. Surfing is the most active option, but I haven´t mustered the energy to wrestle the waves. Most of my energies have been directed towards working on my tan and choosing between the myriad of seafood items on the excellent menu of Restaurant San Cristobal - I can recommend both the Red Snapper ... read more

Day 6 Saltillo Zacatecas Guadalajara Villa Corona, no, not the beer factory :( just a town Highlights: route 54; wild bulls; Joshua trees; crosses; Tabasco; the three sisters; moo moo's; tequila plants; Woke up early (way too early for Carlo, 6:30am) but what else can you do at a Pemex stay in bed till 9? It was a misty, foggy and smoggy morning, a quick sandwich with peanut butter and jam a cup of strong coffee and were on the road at around 7.30am. Oh yeah let me tell you about the bathrooms here at the Pemex, they upped the price on the bathroom visits, last night it was 1peso (10cents) to get in now this morning it was 2pesos, how in the world did they change an old rusty coin machine in ... read more

Before i arrived into Mexico, Vero gave me a lecture on Vitamin T. "Ohh, you will learn about out vitamin T series- tamales, taco, tostadas, tamales, tomato... and i will make sure u try everything." I secretly added tequila to the list too. My first Vitamin T intake is of course the Tortilla :). There are various type of tortilla available, made of different type of corn or mixed with different type of beans. The color of the tortillas come from the color of the maize. In UK, we normally buy tortilla sold in 6 pieces in a pack. However, in mexico, people buy them by the weight, Veronica's family buys about a kilo every day. It is about 7peso( about 35 pence) for a kilo (price has recently gone up to 10 peso per kilo). ... read more

"Ring..........!" I didnt remember setting the alarm the night before. Ohh, it was the school bell and i could see student assembled in the basketball courts, waiting for the heardmaster's speech. I arrived late yesterday at Veronica's and didnt realise there is a school right behind her house. . The school scenes actually entertained me in many ways...In one afternoon, i saw student learning ballroom dancing. On another occasion, there was salsa music coming from the school in the evening, it seemed like they were having party. Also from my room, i could see range of mountains. Veronica told me some of them are active volcano. First day in Mexico, we did the usual tourist stuff. Visited various places - Zocalo, Palacio Nacional, Templo Mayor, Cathedral Metropolitana... Zocalo meaning base, is one of the world's largest ... read more
