Virgin of Guadalupe is Mexico's most popular religious and cultural image.Guadalupe's feast day is celebrated on December 12, it is to commemorate the apparition of Virgin on the hill of Tepeyac near Mexico City from December 9, 1531 through December 12, 1531. Here is how the story goes, Juan Diego saw a beautiful lady dressed in a blue mantle trimmed with gold on an old Aztec shrine, which is the now Tepeyac Hill several times. He was sent to tell the church that he had seen Virgin Mary and a shrine should be built on that site to honour her. However, no one believed what he said. On his fourth encountering with the lady, the lady image was emblazoned on his cloak, this has lead to the church in accepting his story and a cult developed ... read more

Friday Didn't really do anything. I went to school and took my first Literature test. This is a big accomplishment for me because it is COMPLETELY in spanish, and you know what, I think I aced it thanks to a little help from my dictionary and the teacher. Then I went home and ate with the family. My aunt's kids had come so it was a FULL house. Then I went and practiced the music at 4. I was gonna go to a party with my friends from the music group but it was too expensive. I did rent a movie though. I ended up sleeping here alone until 1 a.m. when my host mom got home. Saturday Well, I walked to my school at 12 to pay for this rediculous scarf I need to participate ... read more

Bienvenidos Y'All! So these three quotes potentially sum up our Mexico experience: 1. Larry (South Carolina-Former Hippie-Done Time for Dealing in the 60s-Living Retired Life on The Pacific Coast in Mexico) to Dom & Yvette (your average travel punters) insert southern drawl "Do you guys know what all the pyramids have in common? (dramatic pause) They're all on the same latitude! And why do you think that might be - how on earth could they know? (second dramatic pause) They're road signs for alien ships!" 2. Typical Traveler Dude in Backpackers Hostel: "I tell you man, Tulum without a mosquito net... you might as well just slit your wrists!" 3. American Tourists in Cancun to Dom & Yvette as we rush to get on a bus with our backpacks insert gregarious american accent "Are you ... read more

Having spent the last few days in Mexico City, I was really looking forward to get out of the city to see this archaeological place. I was thrilled at the thought of going to see and climb a pyramind. This would be my first time as i have never been to Egypt. Although I have seen some pictures of Teotihuacan pyramids on the internet, but it is not the same when you are pyhsically there. The idea of a real pyramid stand right before me really excite me :). We took the bus from Terminal Norte and it took about an hour to get there. Teotihuacan is located in the northeast of Mexico City. To the Aztecs, Teotihuacán was a holy place, where the sun, moon and universe were created. It was they who gave Teotihuacán ... read more

Day 8 Villa Corona Colima Tecoman La Placita on the coast Highlights: the movie Cocoon; vulcano Colima; finally the coast; hot, heat, dust, sweat and no showers We are packing it in today as we are leaving the hotspring, but not before a final visit in the morning. As we walk over to the hotsprings Carlo says to me "doesn't this remind you of the movie Cocoon?, lets tell the folkies that we are really 80 years old and have been coming to these hotsprings forever" I laugh, yes I think it is a great plan as we really feel kinda out of place here. I believe my D'nM are the youngest ones here so if you leave them out the average age is probably about 75. There was not much to pack as Carlo and ... read more

Our knee were aching and our feet were soring due to the long salsaing night yesterday at Mama Rumba. We decided to take things slowly today, we went to Chapultepec - The Grasshopper hill. On top of the hill, is the Chalpultepec Castle, where Emperor Maximilian and Empress Carlota of Mexico lived. At the bottom of the hill, there is a huge park, about 1600 acres and can easily take up to 2 or 3 days to explore. It has a few lakes, playgrounds and a zoo. The park is also the house of many museums, this includes the famous National Museum of Anthropology. We got off at Chapultepec Metro station, which brought us directly to the park entrance. To get to the top of the hill, one can walk or take the tourist train. Of ... read more

Hi everyone After a few days in San Cristobal de las Casas, I decided to continue my journey through Mexico. I headed for the town of Palenque. Not very far on the map but 5 winding, twisting hours on the bus. I hadn't realised quite how high I had been in San Cristobal until it came to time to leave. 2,000 metres/6,000 feet for the stat keepers out there. The ancient Mayan ruins in Palenque are considered by many to be the finest. As for the town itself, I didn't take a shine to it. Perhaps it's because I was tired but there was not much going for the town. My guide book described it as a "lively and colourful" town. That would only apply if by "lively" you mean "noisy" and by "colourful" you mean ... read more
