These pictures are taken at the Palacio Nacional which functions as the offices of the president. All the murals are painted by Diego Rivera. It depicts the mexican civilization and the daily life of its people. I just love the painting, every painting tells a story. It is a good way to learn the history by just admiring the painting without reading through paragraph and paragraph of writing. Very convenient for lazy people, i.e me. Apparently, this is the location where Aztec emperor Moctezuma built the first palace, which later was destroyed by the spaniard, Cortes. He rebuilt it with 3 interior courtyard. This explains the spanish influenced architecture. ... read more

I usually do my homework before travel. I was reading the danger and annoyance session in the guidebook. Mexico City is one of the dangerous cities in the world. Express Kidnapping, mugging, taxi crime and car theft remain at significant high rate.On top of that, its air pollution level is most severe from December to May and that was the time i will be there. I wasn't quite worried about the mugging and theft as it can happen anywhere in the world; what really concerned me were express kidnapping and taxi crime. To make my worries worse, my friends, spanish teacher and my sister kept reminding me to be extra carefull in Mexico, which they have never advised me so when i travel to other countries. I was also kind of daunted by previous bad experience- ... read more

Day 5 - San Antonio, TX Saltillo (I do not know the states in Mexico so from now on I will leave them out) Highlights: truck permit; pollution; Pemex We packed a few last minutes things into the truck and planned to meet mom and dad at the Flying J (truck stop or a travel plaza as they like to call them now a days) our last stop in our current civilization about 5km north of the border. Carlo and I needed coffee for the road (as you know we got hooked on Starbucks, we blame it on the road travel :) and I had seen one yesterday when mom and I had done some errand, ofcourse it was completely a good 10km in the opposite direction but we were desperate. We were pretty excited ... read more

North America » Mexico » Chiapas » Puerto Arista December 6th 2006

Glad to descend back to the coast out of the 2000m weather in San Cristobal. Puerto Arista may sound to you like a port, but the best part of it is the bird rich estuary that backs onto the camping/cabañas. I stayed at Amazonia Camping Cabañas which is 200m west from the Lonely Planet trailed Jose Camping Cabañas. However, even with some assistance on directions, my taxi driver only managed to find the former. Jose rents the one canoe for exploring the bird sanctuary and also has a functioning restaurant, unlike Amazonia. I enjoyed my early moring canoe so much I rented the canoe late afternoon as well. The santuary is so peaceful. I had the canoe and the santuary to myself - except for the wildlife of course. When embarking the canoe, best first to ... read more

Hello again When I booked this trip back in England, I never really queried why my flight from Los Angeles to Mexico City involved a change in Dallas - I was too excited by the whole trip. So, I found myself checking into Los Angeles Internatinal Airport at 5am one windy morning. The airport was packed. When I got to the front of the queue, I realised why. All flights to Dallas had been cancelled due to tornado warnings in Texas. The only way I could get to Mexico City that day was to change in Chicago! Chicago! Now, one of my favourite films is Planes, Trains and Automobiles about a guy trying to get to Chicago for Thanksgiving. The weather is often bad in Chicago causing planes to land at other airports. As I sat ... read more
