Buenos Dias! We started off the day by going into Zihua to do some shopping - for both Christmas and provisioning purposes. In my Christmas shopping endeavors, I came across three basic types of shops: those that are established and cater primarily to tourists, those that are shacks on the beach and cater to tourists, and those in the traditional market frequented by locals. The first - the more established, upscale, official shops - are interspersed throughout the myriad restaurants that host the same crowd. I started my shopping here, only to notice that everything was ridiculously overpriced. Straw purses that should have cost $5 at the most cost nearly $50. A shirt that should have cost perhaps $10 was also almost $50. I soon gave up looking for a deal here and made my way ... read more

Well I have an excellent excuse for not writing. I hung out with my friend for the past two days. I went to my friend, Carmen's resturant around 6 on Friday. It is called El Campo Real. I got their just as her little brother, Jesús's birthday party was ending. He is now 5. We went to the movies with her cousins, her little brothers, and her exchange student brother, Johnny the Gun from Thailand. We saw the Santa Claus 3. It wasn't very good. I wouldn't recommend it. I ended up sleeping over. We watched Pirates of the Carribean, but I was tired so I kinda passed out before we finished. I woke up the next morning just as Carmen's mom and dad were leaving. They told me to put on a video so I ... read more

Hi blog readers (I was trying to think of a better name for you all than that but I haven't thought of one yet - suggestions on a postcard) After a week on Isla Mujeres, it was time to move on southwards down the rest of the Yucatan peninsula. My next stop was Playa del Carmen, known to the locals as simply Playa. The history of Cancun and Playa is interesting. In the 1970s, Cancun was simply a small strip of land hanging off the end of the Yucatan peninsula in the shape of a number 7. The main road bypassed the area and carried on to the ferry port so people could get to Isla Mujeres. All that was in Cancun was a small village and miles of unspoilt beaches. The Mexican government thought, "aye, ... read more

With only a couple of weeks left doing all of Mexico was going to be impossible. So, we limited ourselves to a couple of places with the priority being sun and relaxing - it is hard work travelling! Chasing the sun, paradise beaches and the chance of some diving we headed from Flores (Guatemala) to Tulum in Mexico, via Belize. This was a gruelling journey of about 16 hours but we finally made it. Unfortunately we were only rewarded with a beautiful beach as the weather was awful. We spent a couple of days in Tulum walking along the beach (in the rain), visiting the ruins, and also caught up with a friend from home, Amy, who has been teaching English there for a couple of months! Hi Amy! We couldn´t hack any more bus journeys ... read more

The trip to Tijuana started well. We parked the car just north of the border and took the bus to Tijuna - a 15 min ride. The main street, Revolucion, was, as you expect, full of people trying to sell you anything and everything. They did lack a bit of sales technique though. Hello, welcome, come have a look, best store! hardly trigger any buying needs. Once off Revolucion, it got a bit more interesting, with vibrant street markets, street musicians and underdressed ladies. We had a very nice seafood meal and headed back to the bus. For some reason the way to the border from Tijuana is a lot longer than the other way. This time it took us 2 hours. Later we discovered that the US immigration added the extra 1h45min. At last we ... read more

This time, I'm traveling with Insun and her husband to Cancun, Mexico. This is my first time seeing the Gulf of Mexico, and it feels more authentic by seeing it directly from Mexico! So I get acquinted with Insun before we left the States, and she made me a backpack, complete with a mini sombrero for my Mexican adventure. Now I'm ready. Well, a layover in Miami is inevitable on this trip, so I waited patiently at the airport before finally boarding to Cancun in the Yucatan Peninsula, almost directly south from Atlanta. White sand beach, turquois water and warm weather. What else can you ask for? We stay at a resort here, complete with mini golf course and private beach. We all have fun in Cancun for a couple of days. Signing off for now. ... read more

We've just arrived and spent our first day in beautiful coastal Guerrero, Mexico, where we're staying in a quaint little fishing village by the name of Barra de Potosi, just a few miles south of the more infamous resort towns of Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo. Our two-story bungalow is beautiful and fits right in with the Pacific Mexican coastline. It's shaping up to be quite a relaxing vacation; so far, the most difficult parts have been the language barrier, the heat, and bargaining - nothing that can't be dealt with using a little Spanglish and drinking some refreshing beers (more Coronas = better Spanglish). I expected things to be incredibly cheap here, and so far I haven't found it to be that way. I wanted fifty-cent Coronas, not dollar-twenty Coronas. It's only been one day, though, and ... read more

We've selected Mexico. It's our first foray out of Canada together that will last longer than 20 minutes! (My father-in-law got a little turned around at the "bridge" in Niagara Falls, Ontario sometime ago...long story!) We are travelling down with another lovely couple from our town and they are helping us to get our feet wet in the Travelling Set! We plan on leaving in March (when it's very windy, snowy and wet up here in Timmins, Ontario). Neither one of us has done the Spring Break scene when we were young and this is going to be great. I will be keeping a weekly documentation of the trip right up until the day we take off. Then, once we get back, I'll be able to give a full run-down of our experience together! If ... read more

¡Hola! Last night was by far the best night of my life her in México so far. I was sitting at the computer around 5 when my host mother asked me if I wanted to go to a Quinceañera, which is a 15-year-old girls birthday party. It is very fancy, so I got all dressed up and we were off the the church at 6. We first had to stop and buy a gift for Blanca, La Quinceañera. We got her a pretty little necklace, bracelet, and earring set. The first part of the Quinceañera was held in the church. It was a lot like a wedding. It was beautiful. The dress Blanca was wearing was gorgeous. We arrived late so I missed most of what happened. We came in at the part where everyone was ... read more
