Welcome to the travels of Brooks 'McSmiggerton' Hensle.
What you are about to encounter are my experiences when I worked as for Carnival Cruise Lines, my blog has stories, pictures and descriptions of the people, places and things I encountered. Other than that, I will update anything else exciting since my return.
Thank you for reading about my travels. I hope you enjoy reading and seeing them as much as I am living them.
Ciao,
Brooks Hensle
After sitting in the terminal at Miami international for what seemed like a lifetime they called the flights boarding number to Toronto. I was so happy to be going home - exhausted but happy. The flight was ok, I was delusional, excited and overly tired. I had been up for almost 24 hours. I just wanted to sleep. But sleep wasn’t an option. There was a young girl, who was resting beside me for most of the flight home, and then she started to cry, her ears would not pop. There was a lot of turbulence on the flight and her ears kept on getting clogged. So I sat there watched movie with subtle sounds of her cries. We landed in Toronto, everyone was leaving the plane and the mother looked at me and said,

And I sit here in the airport reflecting on it and can say that I will miss it somewhat. When ever I go on vacation or even a road trip I tend to make a CD with all of my favourite songs at the moment so I can always listen back on the CD and relive the experiences. When I was preparing to leave to come to Carnival, I thought about making a CD to bring along, and then realized that I wanted all of my CD’s from home, so I didn’t make the CD. I know have my entire library of music to reflect back on which is amazing. I know that there are

I decided that I wanted to do something that was so extreme and so memorable that I couldn’t resist. And then the thought came to me. SKY DIVING. Why not!! I had been talking about wanting to go sky diving for some time with my friends on the ship but never actually thought I could get the nerve to go. When I was at Star Centre, Jeanette and Marlize went, and when I heard about it I knew I had to go. A lot of people were skeptical, scared and thought it was an over the top experience to have. And one would think with what I have

My contract with Carnival is over in a few days and I want to take this time to thank a few key people and reflect a little. I have seen and done some amazing things over the last six months. Be it, walking through the French influenced downtown of Martinique, sneaking into exotic resorts, hitting up the Boat Yard with fellow crew in Barbados, going on tours with the Tour Guide or be it lounging on a beach with great friends. I can look back on this adventure and know that it has shaped me in someway. As most of you know, I am generally a pessimistic person. I have

I am being sent here by Carnival to get my Simulation, Training, Assessor, and Research Certification. This program is all about Adult Education, Course Development/Design and some Maritime Legal proceedings. When I found out I would be coming to Star Centre I was very surprised and excited. I have heard about this place from everyone that works on the ships, and especially in my department. Not everyone is selected to go to this place so it holds a little prestige for me, which I like too. So I needed to get on a flight from Tampa, after the relocation and head back to Ft. Lauderdale. Which seemed odd because I came from Ft. Lauderdale in the first place.

I certainly was red after St. Maarten last voyage, and after two days it turned one Nubian colour of brown. It was an amazing tan. That is until the itching started. And you all know what that means - PEELING….. NOOOOOOOO! Regardless of how much moisturizer I caked on and let marinate my shoulders and upper back peeled - like a baked potatoe. It was actually really yucky. I now look like I have the Michael Jackson disease, and I am not happy one bit. So this cruise we are doing our 4 day voyage to Grand Turk and Bahamas. I am very excited because I have always

HAHAHA So as I previously mentioned that this would be our last time to the St. Islands, I made to sure to try and make the most of what I could while I was there. I haven t really taken a lot of time for me the past little while. And anyone who knows me knows that my me time when I am home is driving late at night and singing to really bad music at the top of my lungs. Well here on the ship there isn t really a place that I can do that, so I have had to be a little

Trust me you will be sorry that you doubted how much I work. This is something that Jeanette, Catherine, Richard, Kristina, Marlize etc… talk about all the time. First I will tell you what it is like to live onboard. I know that I have mentioned it a few times but let’s revisit what I mentioned before. The environment that I am currently in is very intense. And the funny thing is I don’t think I can fully describe everything or paint you a pretty Norman Rockwell style image to depict what it is like. But here goes… Being onboard is like living in a

Next week will be the last time we sail to St. Maarten, St. Lucia and St. Kitts. We will be changing runs. This means that our home port will move to Tampa Florida, from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. We will sail to Grand Cayman, Belize, Costa Maya and Cozumel. I was lucky enough this week to have Panama port off. I really wanted to go and see the Panama Canal, and I tried very hard to get a crew pass for the tour - it was sold out though. Catherine was going to be filming the tour and she really wanted me to go on the tour with her, but I

The past two cruises have been a little bitter sweet, chalk full of emotions. Our Sr. Manager stayed onboard our ship for another cruise to develop my manager and I a little more. Initially I was not for him staying, I thought, “You came, you saw, no go!” But at the end of the voyage, I was happy that he got to see my manager and I working together. It isn’t everyday that you find a manager that you work well with. I can say that my manager and I work very well together. We just get each other. It’s comfortable, relaxing
