Claire: after a day of playing on playa delfines in cancun and visiting an iguana infested mini ruin opposite it, we met our tour group in downtown cancun and went out for dinner. the next morning we headed down the coast for an hour to playa del carmen, another tourist type resort. its still quite american here and reasonably expensive for food, etc. we spent the afternoon after we arrived on the beach with a little snorkelling just in the shallows (i found loads of little fishes!) then had dinner with our tour. the people on our tour all seem very nice and are mainly aussies/kiwis with a swedish couple and a girl from kent thrown in. we have more trouble getting them to understand our scottish accent than we do getting the locals to understand ... read more

Back in Mexico after our wonderful weeks in the somewhat chillier but beautiful Guatemala and the super laidback lifestyle of Belize. Our last night in Caye Caulker had been spent in the local dive "Oceanside Bar" where a local band (which means they were actually two old guys from the US who have settled in San Pedro on Ambergris Caye) It had become a late night (about 2am, which is pretty crazy over here) so our initial plan of taking the 8.30am ferry back to Belize City had failed. The 10am would have to do. And that left at about 10.30 so we were off to a slow start. Next we took a very old looking bus to the border city of Chetumal, and thinking this would be a very short trip (not often the case ... read more

Well another week has flown by and I cant even explain how fast time is going. Everyone is getting exciting to go home and start packing but at the same time its really sad. Most of the exchange students I will probably never see again. It just seems like such a shame to spend all this time with everyone and build so many friendships and then have everyone leave. I guess thats the way it goes and even though it sucks I know for sure that theres a handful of people that I will be visiting especially jason in vancouver and heather in new york. This last week has been pretty lowkey once again. We were in the process of planning a trip to Zacatecas for last weekend but then we decided we only have 2 ... read more

Yea-yah to my mom for completing the Chicago Marathon! She didn’t tell us (me and the cats) until she completed it but I hear Chauntee was quite excited, too. My entire family has been into running except for a certain brown sheep. Anything more than a couple of miles doesn’t interest me. I’ll stay at home, read the news all day long, and dip brownies into Snak Packs thank you very much. My really long cold is finally over. I guess those penicillan injections in my ass really helped. After feeling like I was three again, some Mexicans told me that everything is injected in their ass. Then I felt like everyone was three. Bridget was here for a few days and we had our year and a half anniversary (insert aww here). We did fun ... read more

So I am sitting here on our last day on the trip and I just cant believe it is almost over. The last couple of weeks have been awesome. I am staying with my host mom, Alicia, who is a 63 yr old widow who is crazy! She is one of the coolest women I have ever met. She has a pool, treats us like gold, and cooks like you wouldnt believe. We have been traveling around Cuernavaca and neighboring towns for the past couple of weeks. We have visited pyramids, Myan ruins, and the Silver Capital of the World to name a few. I also took a day trip with Kyle Brill and Colleen to visit an orphanage that some Augie Alumni work at. It was a great experience and definitely something that I would ... read more

A running theme for my time in Mexico has been "You can do whatever you want, you're in Mexico." This weekend I went to Corona Music Fest. We met up with our friend from Britilandia. I drank four beers on the taxi ride to the Estadio Azteca. I bought Bud Light for nostalgic purposes, and a Belgian 9% for enhanced drunkeness purposes. I had some delicious al Pastor before going into the show. I peed in an alley near the entrance. I was cool, but then this guy we were hanging out with, took a pis, and got stopped by the police. He had to pay the cop $250 pesos, sucks. I think if that happens to me, I will pretend not to speak Spanish. "I don't understand-o." Estadio Azteca is the biggest stadium I've ever ... read more

We flew into Puerto Vallarta and drove 45 minutes north to Sayulita, a charming fishing village. We are staying at VILLA AMOR, a small boutique hotel with very reasonable prices and fabulous restaurant. The hotel is located on the bay and it's just a short walk to the beaches. The more popular beach has surfing, snorkeling, restaurants, also beach chairs and umbrellas for rent. We chose to go to the La Playa de la Muerta, which is the beach by the cemetary. You walk through the cemetary and come to a gorgeous desolate beach. We purchased beach mats in town and hung out here. Great bird watching area, pelicans, egrets, herons. We didn't do anything and that was our goal. Great time and we will return.... read more

after a day in acapulco, we headed to mexico city and have spent two days exploring. we are staying in the historical center, which houses some of the most beautiful buildings i have ever seen. our hostel is a block away from the zocalo, the heart of the city, which is surrounded by the national palace and the cathedral. using actual building materials from aztec ruins, the cathedral was built on top of these ruins. a small chunk of excavated ruins, which survived the spaniard destruction, are less than 50 meters away from the cathedral. construction of the cathedral started in the 1500s and took 300 years to complete...wow! the first day we did our own walking tour and noticed that all of the buildings are crooked...doorways and windows vividly lopsided. (pictures to come) the second ... read more
