It was still stormy this morning and the mountains of Saudi Arabia, usually clearly in view from our hotel, had disappeared into the mist. We packed up after breakfast and waited for our car that was to take us the hour and a half down the coast to Nuweiba. When the car arrived it turned out to the same driver as our Mount Sinai trip. After the obligatory stop at the “Tourism and Antiquities Police” office to file the details of our trip, we headed down the coastal road. Our plan was to spend one night in a hotel in Nuweiba before catching the ferry to Jordan the next day. The trouble is, the area where the hotels are is 10 km from the port. As we would have had to make a trip to the ... read more

Dag 250 - 253.

See letter in English below Dana, 22/01/07 ¡Hola Lou!

One of the Seven Wonders of the World for a reason! Wow!! Took 2 days here to see it all and I'd recommend a third actually! Site is huge. Ok so we got an early start and did the walk in through the 1.2 km Siq (a huge canyon formed by the Earth) that ends at The Treasury or Al-Khazneh. If you have ever seen pictures of Petra, you have seen The Treasury! What a beautiful sight! Did hike up to the High Places of Sacrifice with views of valley. Came down the other side into another valley, passing carvings, tombs and more. Found this random staircase that is more just small ledges in the rock climbing straight up. Decided to follow it and found another reservoir. The Nabateans were absolute masters of water as this ... read more

See letter in English below Dana, 20/01/07 ¡Hola Lou!

One of those groups of historical peoples that failed to get a mention in any of the history books we have encountered are the tribal Nabataeans. Picture a small empire built up out of the lucrative proceeds of controlling the camel pack-train trade routes through the deserts of what is now Jordan. If it had not been for the growing influence of the spreading Roman Empire around 200AD, they would have continued to expand their incredible ability to carve stunning building facades out of the soft sandstone rock faces of their capital Petra. Undeniably one of Jordans outstanding attractions, Petra had us spending one massive afternoon just walking from one end to the other and back, gobsmacked by the artistry of their architecture. The 'Treasury' is one of those buildings that contests the 7 wonders of ... read more

Just like every traveler who returns from their first big journey with the travel bug, I sat for months pondering how I should proceed from my first humble steps as an explorer of the world. One thing was sure though - after my first big journey I was in no way prepared financially for a return to the road so quickly. And so while I hastened to finish off my university degree, numerous ideas ran through my head. First of all I considered an exploration of the United States. After all Canada’s partner to the south while very similar, nonetheless contains a vast amount of this intangible entity known as Americana. This journey was not meant to be as it turned out. The American transport system upon closer inspection was not what I had become ... read more

Middle East » Jordan » South » Wadi Rum January 1st 2009

The trip to Jordan's famous Wadi Rum was split into two parts due to the modifications for the Xmas New Years edition of the the tour. Normally the wake up call for the Ferry to Jordan from Egypt is 4:00am, being New Years Day, a generous 9:30am was given - phew. We arrived at night and settled down for a Bedouin buffet dinner and entertainment. The dinner was awesome awesome and more awesome. After Egyptian food and minor belly aches for a week it was a relief to consume as much of the delicious salad and succulent lamb as possible without consequence. The bedouins entertained us with songs, some games and some dancing, but being New Years Day, 10pm was bed time. It was generally cold in the main tent, and this continued overnight in the ... read more

At Wadi Musa we check in to our hotel and wash the remaining Dead Sea salt from our hair before joining our guide on the short walk downhill to the entrance to Petra. It’s already quite cold under the clear night sky, but ‘Petra by night’ is too good an opportunity to pass up. The site authority lay down the ground rules for the walk down to the Treasury - no mobiles, no flash photos, no loud talking, and no bunching up as there’s plenty of time to see everything. With the rules established we pass through the gates onto a gravel road that is lit only by candles, spaced every few metres, and the moon overhead. We wind our way down the valley before crossing over a small bridge and entering the Siq - the ... read more
