We've been living in the UK for four years now and have racked up some serious kilometres by rail, road and air and have enjoyed every minute of it! Luckily we don't own a car over here or our carbon footprint would be through the roof!

This is our way of keeping friends and family updated on our latest adventures. If you'd like to be kept up to date on our travels- please sign up!

We’re trying to decode a Croatian sign which, in our estimated translation reads- ‘Stop, Police’. It’s what you would expect at a border crossing. Ahead of us are a couple of port-a-cabins and a simple boom gate barrier that you see at car parks set up for the weekend footy. There are about three or four cars parked on either side of the road and apart from that it’s just us, stopped next to the sign which tells us to do so. British sensitivities in order we figure that if we just sit here and wait patiently someone official will tell us what to do next. A packet of jelly snakes, a massive bag of peanuts, and a re-application of sunscreen later nothing has happened. Luckily Carol (Katie’s mum, who we met on the plane) is ... read more

The sun is high, the weather is warm and the streets are cobbled. We’re in Portugal! Avoiding the touristy restaurants, we happily take a seat at a local spot and order the nation’s favourite- sardines! We thoroughly enjoy perfecting our technique stripping the flesh off the bones and tucking in to the most delicious sardines we’ve ever tasted. All encounters we’ve had with the locals so far has been incredible warm and friendly, including teenagers offering us seats on the train and strangers stopping to help us buy our tickets. We find our way to the main train station to purchase some tickets to Porto for tomorrow. The whole city is centered around a huge bay/port with huge ships. The streets lead off from here in to a valley at the centre of town with dual ... read more

Almost all of our British friends say that the south western counties of Devon and Cornwall are must see UK destinations. After a few years this recommendation eventually sinks in, and so now hooked on the idea, and with Brian and Beth visiting, we organise a few days off work, hire a car, book some accommodation and, on a slightly overcast Saturday morning, set off to see what all the fuss is about. After a few hours driving our first stop on our great south west adventure is Cheddar Gorge in Somerset. The gorge is just outside the village of Cheddar and is (no surprise) where the cheese originated! The gorge is quite surprising because the countryside doesn’t seem to rise much and then all of a sudden we find ourselves in the middle of rocky ... read more

As the Grand Taxi drops us back in Marrakech from our hiking trip in the High Atlas we agree that our first priority should be to buy bus tickets for the next leg of our journey - a couple of days in the coastal city of Essaouira. Two years ago when we were here, a transport strike thwarted our plans to travel to the Atlantic Coast, so this time we were sure not to miss out. Supratours buses operate quite a few services a day between Marrakech and Essaouira so we had assumed we had a pretty good chance of choosing when we wanted to leave. At the counter we find out that first two buses of the day are fully booked; there are only five seats left on the 2:30pm bus; and for reasons beyond ... read more

‘We’re here’, proclaimed the taxi driver, pulling over to the side of the road. ‘Here, really?‘ In our reckoning we must still be about five kilometres short of Imlill, the epicentre of trekking in Morocco’s High Altas mountains. Under the shade of a walnut grove, our guide, cook/muleteer and mule are patiently waiting. After quick introductions our backpacks are strapped onto the mule, along with the food and cooking equipment for the next three days, and with the mule’s cross sectional area almost tripled, our small party sets off. We’re new to trekking, but what we had arranged to do is a three day hike from here (somewhere outside of Imlill) to a small village called Seti Fatma, two valleys away. So with excitement and a little apprehension we head off, following a small track from ... read more

Ever since we arrived in Europe four years ago, we’ve marvelled at the ease with which you can move around from country to country by road, rail and air- sometimes without even the need for a passport check. So, when the current series of holidays presented itself, we couldn’t resist taking it one step further and travelling overland between continents. The bus from Seville will take us as far as Tarifa, from where we’re able to book on to a ferry. One final tortilla and calamari lunch (we are by the sea after all) and we’re on our way to Morocco. The journey is fast and with the time difference, we arrive in North Africa at the same time as our departure from Europe. As we disembark the Aussie made vessel (WA’s own!) we brace ourselves ... read more

Seville, the capital of our favourite spanish region, Andalucia, is famous for two things - its bitter oranges that the British favour for marmalade and the week long Easter festivities of Semana Santa. The famed orange trees are all around us, filling the air with a fabulous scent. With our packs on our backs we weave our way through the bustling crowds in search of our hostel. It’s pouring down with rain and having already caught two buses (the second of which takes us in completely the wrong direction) and a tram, we’re relieved when we find it tucked in behind a grand church in full Holy Week preparations. Men (and presumably women) dressed in pointed hoods and long cloaked gowns reminiscent of the KKK are among the crowds and a group of bearers (having completed ... read more

‘You’ve never been to Rome? Oh, you’ve got to go to Rome‘. That’s what we’d been told time and time again and so we listened to the collective ‘everyone’ and with some cheap flights and a handy hostel booked for two nights we’re off. After negotiating our way into the city from the airport, we’re hungering for a bite of lunch. In food terms, Rome is unknown (to us). Finding good food in Venice wasn’t easy so we aren’t too sure what to expect from Rome. We take a recommendation from the hostel and a few blocks away we grab some outdoor seats at a trattoria style pizzeria. With the weather over the last week in Britain being rainy with temperatures in the low teens, being outdoors here in a t-shirt and jeans in bright sunshine ... read more

Aaah, Paris fashion week, the ultimate event for fashionistas worldwide. Surely the streets will be teeming with stilettos and designer bags. So, why are we surrounded by dark coats and sneakers? It has taken us the four years we’ve been living in the UK to finally take the plunge with the best value Eurostar tickets we can find and take the hop, skip and a platform change across the channel to Paris! Our hotel is filled with Parisian chic decor and no sooner have we dropped off our bags than we’re out in to the city streets in search of Paris’ most iconic landmark. Stopping only for a quick galette in Montparnasse, we wind our way this way and that until finally the tip of the Eiffel Tower comes in to view. We quicken our pace ... read more

Snow has been falling in Dublin constantly for the last 5 hours. It’s now 9:30pm and we’ve been stuck in gridlocked traffic at the N7 motorway junction trying to get out of the city for more than an hour. About two inches of the white stuff has settled on the road around us and what looks close to ten inches worth is on the footpath. And as we sit here the snow keeps on coming... Lachlan’s never driven in conditions like this before and the 30 minutes which it took us to get here was quite fun to say the least. First gear results in wheel spin and no motion, so it’s off limits, and the brakes result in instant sideways action, so they’re off limits too. We must admit it looked very Christmasy as we ... read more
