Today we went into Petra. Arrived there about 8.30 am, those that wanted to ride horses to the beginning of the siq took off as we walked. Not too sure how my foot would have held up in the stirrups. Walking through the siq was an amazing feeling. Wondering what we were going to discover every time we turned a corner. Changing colours of the rock formations, carvings into the rock where temples had been made, and they had even built a gutter to carry water from the runoff from the high cliffs down and into a dam they had made to have water supply. Niches in the rock where there were lit torches placed to pave the way through. Because there were different civilisations Greek, Romans and Egyptians, there is evidence of their style of ... read more

28 Aug - we're in Lawrence of Arabia country, hence the TE Lawrence quote! We drive to Wadi Rum this morning - even more spectacular scenery. I must find some different superlatives to use! Jagged, rugged jebels rise from the desert sands. This is completely unique scenery, in a similar way to Cappadocia - it's not like the Alps, Dolomites, Carpathians, etc and other such amazing mountainous areas. I'm almost sick with the anticipation of our camel trek. These animals are HUGE and I seem to be allocated the biggest beast. However, I get on ok...without falling off (it's a long way down if I did) and manage to survive 3 HOURS trekking across Wadi Rum - no bad for a lass who's never been on the back of a horse or even a donkey before!!!!!! ... read more

Left Aqaba today after a good nights sleep in a nice Hotel for a change. Clean , clean, clean!! Driving along Jordan is so huge adn the statistics are amazing. Apparently 50% of the population is under 18.. Very Modern and from Aqaba, you can see Israel. Amazing how close. Aqaba is a very nice place. http://www.aqaba.jo/english/index.php Went to Wadi Rum which is in the outskirts and occupied by the bedouins. Amazing rock formations and sand colours! http://www.pbase.com/mansour_mouasher/rum&page=all check out this site to see what I mean. Not my pictures but I have similar. Had tea in a bedouin tent and it was so cool from the sun, and so relaxing. Would loved to have stayed out in the night there.. Then had a feast for lunch. Food is so fabulous.. and healthy! Headed off to ... read more

27 Aug - today we visit Petra, an extremely famous UNESCO site and eighth wonder of the ancient world / one of the Modern wonders of the world. We have a guided tour in morning with our guide Ibrahim. Even the approach to Petra is spectacular with out of this world rock formations. Petra is a vast, unique city, carved into the sheer rock face by the Nabateans. Walking through the Siq is like walking through a huge canyon but steeped in history. After a few hours walking, Ibrahim takes us aside and spins us a story about looking for gold, we are so distracted that we follow his every word...it is of course a well-known plot for tourists so that we step back and face the iconic view from the Siq looking on to the ... read more

Arrived in Aqaba the biggest sea port you have ever seen. It has existed in this form as a port for 6000 years. This apparently is the lung of this country. Getting off the ferry was the most organised, incredibly efficient system that should be in place in Egypt.. but then don't hold your breath!! Met by the Geckos group who channelled our entry so smoothly it was like just home. Arrived at our hotel which feels like 5 star! compared to what we had previously. It can only get better than this I am sure. Went had had a fish dinner which was great last night. Then to bed. Oh I forgot to tell you.. getting off the bus to get the ferry I rolled my ankle!! so sore, could not walk on it for ... read more

Jordan vet sannelig hvordan.

Patrick and I hired a taxi driver named Moosa to take us from Aqaba to Wadi Rum. He was a really nice guy, but a bit too talkative at times. He took us to his brother's restaurant for breakfast and we ate virtually for free. The drive to Wadi Rum was great. It was through the desert and very scenic. Once we arrived in Wadi Rum, we went into town and Moosa dropped us off at our guide's house. We then met a Swiss brother/sister duo and they joined us for our night into the desert. The four of us rode in the back of a pickup truck for a four hour tour of the desert before arriving at our camp. This is Lawrence of Arabia territory so we saw Lawrence's house (which was nothing more ... read more
