Gunseverson - Gunnar & Joanna: Tales from the road, 2008

As most of you know we hit the road for 10 months of travel on september 15, 2008 shamelessly stealing Gord & Jamie's Wasaga Beach wedding as a send off! We will start in South-East Asia, moving to India, Middle East, and then the Himalayas of Nepal and Tibet. That is the rough plan that will no doubt change a few times. Nothing but time and travel.

My vows
Joanna's Vows
The ring

Yes we left the beautiful Mediterranean coast for snow? What the hell? Got off our bus to a snowstorm! It was 25 degrees Celsius 2 days ago? WTF? Oh well we soon warmed up in our hotel which turned out to be a cave carved into one of the huge chimney looking things from the Flintstones! Actually quite warm inside out of the snow! Next day we jumped on a tour as some of the stuff to see was further away then expected. Had great views of the Goreme Valley before we hit up the Underground City. Little known but there [View Full Entry]

Kas Middle East » Turkey » Mediterranean » Kas
Oh Kas (Kash) I loved you so much! A beautiful Mediterranean Coastal town with Greece in the backdrop. Had a room here overlooking bay with incredible views. Walked through town and found a theatre just sitting there in the hill. Came down the other side and found a big market. So once again bought more olives and cheese and veggies to go with the excellent red wine! Should have stayed here longer! [View Full Entry]

The beautiful Aegean coastal town of Fethiye on our next stop. Warm weather and cheap wine, even found a pension that gave us a full kitchen to cook in, excellent! Went to the market and bought like 8 kg of fruits and veggies! [View Full Entry]

Alexandria Africa » Egypt » Mediterranean » Alexandria
Well we took almost 16 hrs of train to get from Luxor to Alexandria, but made it fine. Tired but fine. Found a great small hotel, 6th floor, overlooking a town square, right on the Mediterranean. Had a great Koshari lunch then lounged day away in town. Watched sunset with bottle of wine. Great night. Next day made our way to Fort Qaitbey. Not sure on history here. Took tram back into town and was pick pocketed by someone of my beloved IPOD. SOAB!!! Spent rest of day in Police station having my statement translated into Arabic for my insurance. Wished [View Full Entry]

For $37 USD we arranged a 3 day, 2 night float on the Nile. Just us and Andrew, Levier, and Brett, with a personal cook and driver!! This is great as we saw Gap Tours with like 20 people on the boat. Anyways, we grabbed a couple bottles of Obelisk wine and a few beers and started our day. Amazingly peaceful floating the Nile on a Felucca. Just zig-zagging our way downstream, watching the world slowly go by!! Stopped at sunset for a freshly cooked meal on an Island and had some wine and conversed through the night. The next day [View Full Entry]

Abu Simbel Africa » Egypt » Upper Egypt » Abu Simbel
For those who make the trip to Aswan, there are tours daily to Abu Simbel. They however start at 3 a.m.!! So you arrive at Abu Simbel at 7 a.m., tired as heel but whatever. Abu Simbel is four 20 m statues of Ramses II carved out of a mountainside. It was built to show his power, and if you could imagine in 1500 B.C. floating down the Nile and coming across this it wuld scare the hell right out of you. Now once again this entire structure was moved vertically up the mountain when the Nile was dammed. Beside it [View Full Entry]

Aswan and Philae Africa » Egypt » Upper Egypt » Aswan
So another night train to Aswan, this one kinda sucked. Very beautiful town on the Nile. All lush in town and then, bam, nothing but sand!!Checked out the unfinished Obelisk. Was going to be huge but broke when they were cutting it out so it was abandoned. Took in Philae Island. The Temple was dedicated to Isis, who found the heart of her slain brother Osiris, on Philae Island. Now Philae Temple was relocated when they dammed the Nile, so they actually found a similar looking island, and cut it into the same shape. The old temple had to be dammed [View Full Entry]

Abydos and Dendara Africa » Egypt » Upper Egypt » Luxor
Took day trip North to Abydos and Dendara. Abydos has the best hieroglyphs in Egypt, mainly because the Temle was lost for centuries under sand. There was actually a town situated on top of the Temple for Centuries without anyone knowing what was beneath. This allowed the hieroglyphs to be incredibly colourful still. Dendara had a great Hypostyle Hall and a small tomb to go into. [View Full Entry]
