Aqaba, Jordan. The principal reason for stopping here is to get off and ride a bus for 2 and a half hours to see Petra. Petra is a fantastic underground city carved out of stone. There is no way to describe it - you have to go and see it for yourself. For now, the best thing to do is Google it and look at the photographs. Do not ever miss the opportunity to see Petra, one of the seven wonders of the world. We did see Petra in 1996, so we merely rode into the small Arab city of Aqaba, looked around for a bit and came back to the ship. Aqaba is interesting because it is adjacent to the city of Elat, Israel. Despite all the friction and war on Israel's borders, Jews and ... read more

08h00. There's a knock on the door. Housekeeping! The alarm hasn't even gone off yet! Packing and leaving the rucksack at the door, I headed down to breakfast and made a packed lunch from the bread and cheese available! Ali came to collect us at 09h00 and we began the slow climb up from Petra to the summit of the surrounding hills and the plateau beyond. Upon reaching the summit, Ali stopped the bus to give us one last glimpse of Petra before we headed off along the King's Highway down to Wadi Rum. The journey across the desert began on the outskirts of Petra with red sandstone rocks and slowly moved to yellow sandstone before finishing up with brown sand. We passed several camels along the route and numerous goat herds; all the while the ... read more

I awoke before the alarm this morning. Not because I wasn't tired but because I thought I'd overslept! 45 minutes before breakfast and I was wandering around in the early morning sun taking photographs across the valley into Israel. Following a simple breakfast, we packed our bags into the bus but set off on a three hour walk into the Dana Nature Reserve. We walked through the deserted village and headed off through some long neglected gardens and onto the mountain side. Although we saw evidence of porcupines and irises, the only wildlife to speak of came in the form of an eagle soaring overhead. Somewhat disappointed by the lack of fauna, we arrived back at the bus and settled down for the ride to Petra. In which nothing prepares you for the sightAs we were ... read more

That would be Petra. Quite simply put, Petra is Jordan. I began my Middle East trip last March landing at Queen Alia International Airport somewhere on the far outskirts of Amman which I did not visit even for a second. After procuring my visa for 10 JD (Jordanian dinars, which I had to purchase for $15. Official rate is 1 JD:$1.40) and picking up my luggage, I met the Hertz agent and was soon speeding off in my reserved Mitsubishi Galant towards Madaba, the starting point of the King's Highway south to Petra. There are 2 other north-south highways in Jordan: the desert highway which sounded about as exciting as its name and the Dead Sea highway. I opted for the Kings Hwy over the Dead Sea route because the Kings Hwy passed through Wadi Mujib ... read more

Next we drove to the Red Sea and bid adieu to our Egyptian tour host, Tommy, and Egyptian guide, Yassir, who were afraid they would drown when we walked across the sea on dry ground. As it turned out, we had to use a boat, so they could have made it, but we had another guide waiting for us on the Jordanian shore. Moses and the Israelites walked across the Red Sea and when Pharaoh’s army tried to follow, they did drown. It’s not known exactly where the children of Israel crossed the sea, but it was definitely not on a diesel-powered ferry boat like ours. We landed at Aqaba at the southern tip of Jordan where three countries come together (Egypt, Israel and Jordan) at the northern tip of the Gulf of Aqaba a part ... read more

Day 10 - Petra. We got up fairly early so we could do as much as possible in the limited 1 day visit we had to Petra. Petra is known as the rose-red lost city, a 2000 year old trading centre with amazingly preserved buildings. It is most famous in the western world for the image of the treasury building in the Indiana Jones movie, the location of the holy grail. The treasury (locally called Al Khazneh) simply scratches the surface of the sight, but unfortunately no grail was found in our search. Our hotel was about a 100 meter walk from the visitors centre, so Hasan met us in the lobby and arranged our tour guide at the centre. You enter the sight through the siq, the narrow canyon that at times is only 10 ... read more

After a cold night at our first hotel, we checked out in the morning and moved to the El Gee hotel down the street. We then went out and bought food for lunch before heading down the steep road towards Petra, about 1 km away. Tour groups had began arriving, but we quickly bought our tickets and headed down the path toward the Siq - the rock entrance to Petra. Alongside the path, horse drawn carts and horse back riders galloped along a parallel roadway. In my mind, I pictured that we would walk though a rock chasm and quickly be facing Petra. In fact, this canyon seems to run on forever. Beginning relatively wide, the rock cliffs on either side quickly close in narrowing the pathway to a few meters in places. The texture of ... read more

After a decent breakfast at the hotel, Evy and I went off in search of INTERNET. We found a place and tried to make a skype call to the hotel in Petra to book, but the connection was horrible and they could not hear us. We returned to the hotel and made a very expensive call to the hotel in Wadi Musa. We then rushed to pack and head to the minibus station before the final bus of the day. Once again, we were the only Westerners on the small mini bus as it headed out of Aqaba. The roads here are far better than Egypt and most of the ride was on divided four lane highway. Shortly after leaving Aqaba, the highway takes a pass through a very steep set of coastal mountains, like those ... read more
