Feb. 18 - Originally we didn't plan to go to Chiang Mai, but after a number of recommendations, we decided to fit it in. The easiest way to fit it in was at the end of the trip, not ideal, but we made it work. Unfortunately it meant losing a full day to travel. Ferry from Koh Phi Phi to Phuket, transfer to airport, flight to Bangkok, then to Chiang Mai. Feb. 19 - Chiang Mai is about 700 km's north of Bangkok and is the biggest city in northern Thailand. Its located right by the country's biggest mountains and is where most tourists come to do jungle treks, elephant treks, and quite a bit of adventure travel. We were not taking in any of that, we came just to get a feel for the ... read more

After another delicious breakfast of banana pancakes, we loaded up our packs and walked across Railay to get to Railay West beach to catch the 9am ferry to Koh Phi Phi. The ferry actually originates in Ao Nang, and being there's no pier at Railay, you get in a longtail boat, then hop onto the main ferry in the middle of the bay. I don't know if there is a capacity on the boat, but it was packed, and the only spot we could find to sit was on the top deck right by the pile of luggage. The ride over to Koh Phi Phi was fairly quick once you actually get going, just over an hour. After we finally found the guy representing our resort, we hopped in the hotel's longtail boat and headed to ... read more

We had arranged with the tour company to book a driver to take us from the pier at Cheow Lan Lake to Railay Beach, where we had a room booked at the Railay Garden View hotel. The ride was about 3 hours, but was comfortable and fine until the driver stopped in Krabi town at a tour company to try and sell us overpriced hotels and ferry transfers. I think he knew we weren't interested when I told him we weren't getting out of the van. Anyways, we continued on to the pier to catch a longtail boat to Railay beach, as there is no where to get there by land. We arrived at about 5pm, which causes a bit of a problem as its low tide. I had read this before I left but wasn't ... read more

One of the things we had read about and saw pictures of before the trip was Khao Sok National Park, it looked amazing so we had to fit it in. We booked a 3 day, 2 night tour which started at about noon in the park, which is 3 hours north of Phuket. Rather than fitting in an early flight and drive out, we chose to break it up a bit and stay a night at Khao Lak, which is about an hour and a half north of Phuket. We arranged a pickup with our hotel, and were beachside by about noon, at what we later concluded was the best beach on our trip. The water was probably 80 degrees, nice white sand and relatively uncrowded. We spent the afternoon on the beach and watched the ... read more

Although Melissa and I have never been big fans of the package tour, we chose the easy route and booked a day trip to Ayuthaya with our hotel for 850 baht each. The day began pretty early with a minibus pickup, then to a meeting point to meet up with the other passengers. Our van was full of a younger Japanese couple and their friend, a Japanese family of 4, 2 girls from Malaysia, and another couple from somewhere in Europe. No details required, but we once again found that some Japanese people really can be quite rude. Ayutthaya was the capital city of Thailand from 1350 to 1767, when it was basically destroyed by the invading Burmese army. The remaining Ayutthaya historical park was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1976 and contains some ... read more

We had a 6:30 am wakeup call for our flight over to Bangkok, but it wasn't that bad as we got to watch a bit of the Superbowl while we were getting ready. The flight was fine, clearing customs was a breeze and we were soon in a taxi to head into town as the new Suvarnabhumi airport (try pronouncing it, its actually pronounced su-wan-na-poom) is about 30km east of Bangkok. I had picked another tricky hotel to find called the Lamphu Tree House. The hotel gets great reviews, but you can't actually drive straight to it, the taxi has to stop at a bridge over a canal, and then you have to walk a couple minutes to get there. Even though we had directions in Thai for our driver, it still took him a few ... read more

The day began early with a 4:30 wake up to meet Puk and drive out to Angkor Wat to catch the sunrise. It was the last day of our temple passes, and we had taken the recommendation of some guidebooks to save the biggest and most well known temple until the last. As with our sunset, we joined the thousand or so other tourist for this event. Another recommendation from the trusty Lonely Planet was to stick around after sunrise to explore Angkor Wat, as most of the tour groups go back to town for breakfast, then come back. Angkor Wat is the flagstone temple, appearing on the national flag and some of the local currency. It was built in the early 12th century by King Suryavarman II as a Hindu temple dedicated to Vishnu and ... read more

February 4th 2010

Because of the short time frame for our trip, we chose to take the 45 minute flight to Siem Reap. Not a very exciting trip, but saved us a few hours on a bus. The drive to the airport in the morning was more interesting than the flight. We arranged with the hotel to get a taxi, and in Asia that usually means they phone a friend or somebody that has a car who will pay them a kickback. We were picked up in some guys junky old Toyota and headed on our way when we hit a police roadblock where they're clearing an entire intersection and making everybody get out of the way. Apparently there must not have been any other way to get to the airport, so our driver turned the corner and circled ... read more

Our Hong Kong to Phnom Penh flight was with Dragonair, who we'd never heard of (Melissa had some visions of a rickety old plane), but is actually owned by Cathay Pacific and was just fine. We even got a meal on the 3 hour flight, which can come as a bit of a shock after spending so much time travelling within North America, where you hardly even get a bag of peanuts anymore. After making our way through customs, and paying our $20 Visa fee (Cambodia uses mostly US currency for large items, the local riel for smaller amounts), we grabbed a cab and headed to the hotel. It didn't take long to realize you're in southeast asia. The cab driver spent the first part of the drive trying to figure out whether he could take ... read more

February 1st 2010

After a very painful 13 hour plus flight from Vancouver we landed at Hong Kong airport around 6pm. The airport is actually about 30km outside the heart of Hong Kong, but fortunately it has a great public transport system to get around. For about $10 Canadian the ride on the Airport express to town takes 24 minutes. We chose not to stay on Hong Kong island itself as it is a little more upscale, so we ended up staying at a hotel called the Butterfly on Prat in Kowloon, which is just across the bay. Not quite into the Southeast Asian prices yet it cost about $90 a night for the room, but it was a nice room in a good location, once you get past the see-through bathroom windows and doors. I'm not really sure ... read more
