Today's hike up to the volcanic crater rim of Gunung Sibayak was quite tame compared to yesterday's burner up Gunung Sinabung. Both are manageable day trips from Berastagi where I have based myself since flying from Malaysia to Indonesia last Saturday. I arrived in Medan, North Sumatra ~11:00 a.m. local time and immediately began plotting my departure from the furnace that is coastal Indonesia. I was offered a ride to a share taxi office for service to Berastagi but there was no space so I caught a moto-taxi to the bus staging area and was almost immediately on my way to the coolness of the Karo Highlands. I have actually been wearing long pants and a long sleeve shirt at night in stark contrast to Thailand and Malaysia where I hardly wore any shirt at all. ... read more

I realize the heat and humidity theme is getting a bit tiresome but never in my wildest did I think it would be so insanely hot... much to my shock and chagrin of course. I thought I knew what I was getting myself into since I had already been to both Thailand and Malaysia in April and May way back in '06. I was sadly mistaken... I really should have published this entry before arriving in Sumatra as it is pleasantly cool here. $US ≈ 29 Thai baht (B) ≈ 3 Malaysian ringgit (RM) Koh Samui Accommodation and food I decided against reserving a room in advance and checked out a few places in Lamai before settling on Ninja Place which had justifiably good reviews on Tripadvisor. The bungalows were located on the main road but ... read more

City of angels, great city of immortals, magnificent city of the nine gems, seat of the king, city of royal palaces, home of gods incarnate, erected by Visvakarman Indra. Thais abbreviate the full name of their capital to Krungthep but elsewhere most people know the city of angels as Bangkok. Yet another stop in Bangkok for me with this single visit's duration being more than all 7 previous visits in 2006-07 combined. Really just using the city as a bridge between India and Southeast Asia as it's by far the cheapest route to connect the two regions. Also a nice place to decompress after 3 months of up-to-my-eyeballs-in-hassle India. Many travelers mistakenly think that Thailand is full of hassle but they've obviously never been to India, Ethiopia, or the king (rather, pharaoh) of hassle - Egypt. ... read more

Whoever first uttered that nugget obviously never visited Bangkok in April. Sure, it's infernally humid but mix that with nearly 100 balmy degrees (F) and that has the makings of one hot city. I've been here a week and the last couple of days I've taken to staying in my air conditioned hotel room between roughly 11 am and 6 pm while catching up on the New England Patriots productive off season and the Celtics futility against the eminently beatable New York Knicks for which I was not about to wake up at 4:00 am local time to watch live on the internet. The rooftop pool is small comfort from the heat. I haven't blogged since early December 2012 from Turkey. Since then I've been to Egypt for 2 weeks, Ethiopia for a month, Nairobi for ... read more

Welcome to Exhausting Egypt

"Welcome to Egypt" is the common refrain frequently heard from genuine Egyptians but with the massive drop in tourist numbers since 2011's revolution (and the more recent second revolution as referred to by locals), traveling in Egypt, especially the south, has become a serious test of patience for foreigners who disregard the negative press and venture here. When I visited in 2009 there was only a very small hassle factor compared to the present but that is because people are desperate for business in areas that are heavily dependent on tourism. Aswan and Luxor were the prime examples of this. Traveling in the desert and Cairo involved much less exhaustion although crossing the street in Cairo is very unnerving and easily the most dangerous activity in all of Egypt. $US ≈ 6.1 Egyptian pounds (LE) when ... read more

While most of you were eating turkey for Thanksgiving, I unexpectedly found myself in Turkey for the third time on this trip. I was supposed to go to Israel after Tunisia but with the recent conflict I thought best to give it a pass. It turned out to be a hasty an unwise decision as a cessation of hostilities was announced a couple of days after I was scheduled to arrive. It's been quite a different scene in Turkey since I was last here in September. This time it wasn't brutally hot or brimming with tourists. The Mediterranean coast was almost deserted and the temperatures maxed out around 70°F. It was a bit cooler in İstanbul and 55°F or so in Cappadocia but around freezing there at night. Thankfully there was copious sunshine everywhere in stark ... read more

Anakin Skywalker, the young Darth Vader, grew up in Ong Jemel, Tunisia. I did not know that many of the Star Wars sets (both series) were in Tunisia until I started researching what exactly I was going to do here for 2 weeks after I arrived from Sicily a couple of weeks ago. I am tentatively scheduled to fly to Israel tomorrow. In light of current events I will probably cancel it and spend another 2 weeks in Turkey. $US ≈ 1.5 Tunisian dinar (DT) Tunis Tunisia's capital and main port of entry. I arrived here on an overnight ferry from Palermo, Sicily which was quite civilized since I took a berth in a nice 4 person cabin instead of crashing in the lounge like many backpackers were doing. Accommodation and food Upon arrival I thought ... read more

Big Slap

In the Croatian language, slap means waterfall. The biggest waterfall in Croatia (there are many) is located in Plitvice National Park where I was last week the day before tackling Croatia's highest mountain, Dinara. $US ≈ 5.8 Croatian kuna (KN) Plitvice National Park Croatia's premier park. Even though I had driven there the previous day all the way from Sarajevo (~7 hours with stops) I should have given it a pass because the weather was not at all conducive to view the scenery. I contemplated skipping it even as I was driving to the park entrance because the fog was so thick and the entrance fee is a steep 110KN (park open 7:00 - 19:00) plus 7KN/hour to park. Additionally, it seems by October the amount of water has significantly decreased after the typically dry Balkan ... read more

What I've always referred to as Bosnia is technically called Bosna i Hercegovina although I never did figure out just where exactly Hercegovina is located. To make matters more confusing there are portions of BiH that consider themselves a separate territory called the Serb Republic making it easy to understand the derivation of the term "balkanized." $US ≈ 1.5 Bosnian convertible marks (KM) although I'm not entirely sure if they can be converted into any other currency outside of Bosnia which is why I burned my last stash on petrol before crossing back into Croatia. Sarajevo Very pleasant, easily managed city clearly still recovering from the war as evidenced by numerous restoration projects and buildings in major need of restoration. Still enjoyable. Accommodation and food I was very fortunate to reserve 2 nights at Hotel Telal ... read more

Montenegro literally means Black Mountain... in Italian. I first passed through Montenegro along the coast from Albania to Split, Croatia where I picked up a car and drove back to Montenegro after one night in Mostar, Bosnia. I had the car for 10 days and dropped it off back in Split this afternoon then flew to Rome. There are way more tourists than I thought there would be but I think there is no low season here. Budva A purportedly happening place... but not in October. It's very scenic with a nice old town and crystal clear water along the Adriatic Sea but after the Russian oligarchs and their entourages leave at the end of the summer it is very quiet. In addition, the nearby island of Sveti Stefan has been sold to a hotel group ... read more
