Tatev Monastery is in Southern Armenia, a small area wedged in among Iran, Turkey, and Azerbaijan. The Wings of Tatev® is the longest single line aerial tramway in the world. It is 5.7 kilometers long and takes approximately 11 minutes to cross the Vorotan River Gorge to the monastery and village of the same name. Over the gorge, the tram is a maximum height of 320 meters above the ground. Very cool but definitely not for the agoraphobic. Tomorrow I am heading to Byurakan close to Mount Aragats (just over 4000 meters but not at all technical) which I will attempt to summit Monday morning. $US ≈ 411 Armenian dram Yerevan Accommodation and food Initially took my own room sans toilette at Theatre Hostel just south of Republic Square. I booked on hostelbookers.com for ~$18 for ... read more

That would be Joseph Stalin's Dacha (term used very loosely as most dachi are way, way smaller compared to Uncle Joe's) near Sochi's coast that I toured today. Interesting place set several hundered thickly wooded feet above the Black Sea and totally painted green to blend in with the surrounding environment. There is puportedly an elevator and tunnel to the Black Sea but that was sadly not included with the 300p. tour price. Bummer. Couple more days along the Black Sea then Monday night flying to Yerevan, Armenia via Moscow. There does exist a short, direct one hour flight on one of the Baby-Flots but my flight on S7 was purchased for a mere $25 and 10,000 American Airlines frequent flier miles. Cha-ching! I've already flown on S7 twice and was impressed by the service but ... read more

Riveting WWII movie recounting the Battle of Stalingrad as primarily seen by Russian sniper Vasily Zaytsev played by Jude Law. Also starring Ed Harris and Rachel Weisz. The name of the city was changed in 1925 from Tsaritsyn to Stalingrad and again in 1961 to Volgograd, i.e., Volga City Arrived in Adler this afternoon where, like this same time last year, it is extremely hot and packed with summer holidaying Russians. Accommodation and food For the roughly 24 hours total I would spend in Volgograd I had always been planning to be able to find a bed at the train station hotel because it was really the only budget option in town. Not only that it was very convenient to all the sights. It was huge, maybe 100 beds or more, and I had no problem ... read more

I left Siberia last Friday and have spent the last couple of days in Kazan, capital of Russia's Tatar Republic. It is a very nice city and blazing hot at the moment. $US ≈ 33p. (Russian rubles) Казань Kazan Accommodation and food Stayed at Tatyana's Day booked through hostels.com for the low price of 350p.in a dorm with only 2 other people. It was supposed to include breakfast but we had to settle for just tea. WiFi is intermittent. The location was far from the center but it is a 5-10 minute walk to the nearest metro station which zips to the center in a few minutes for 15p. Near the hostel is Dobraya Stolovaya which is ridiculously cheap but closes early Saturday and is not open at all on Sunday. No prob as right around ... read more

Took an unbelievable journey through the remotest part of the world I've ever been in. The tiring, back breaking last few days went something like this: June 29: overnight train ride from Krasnoyarsk to Abakan, 9 hours June 30: share taxi from Abakan train station to Kyzyl, 5½ hours, spent one night in Kyzyl July 1: UAZ (burly Russian 4x4 van) to Mugur-Aksy, 10 hour trip after spending 3 hours picking up passengers and another 2 hours tinkering with the vehicle's engine, spent one night in Mugur-Aksy July 2: short 2 hour trip to Kyzyl-Khaya again by UAZ from where I thought I'd catch another UAZ to Altai, eventually did at 7 pm with same driver, arrived in Kosh-Agach at 1:00 am but gained an hour, spent 2 nights July 4: 8 am minibus to Gorno-Altaisk, ... read more

Spent a few days in Krasnoyarsk in between 2 weeks around Lake Baikal and an upcoming planned 2 weeks in the Tuva and Altai Republics. I liked Krasnoyarsk and it's perfectly situated to break up the trip between the 2 far apart regions. Last night I left on the train for the 10½ hour ride to Abakan. At the train station there is a beater bus leaving for Kyzyl at 7:50 am for 600p. and arriving at 4:00 pm. It was sold out so I waited for the much more expensive and faster share taxi to leave at 8:20 am. The driver first asked for 1500p. but since I was able to ask the correct price from fellow passengers I paid 1200p. Comfortable ride but the scenery was somewhat obscured by the smoke from the nearby ... read more

That's the deepest part of Lake Baikal located in the middle of Siberia where I spent the last couple of weeks after St. Petersburg and Moscow. The average depth is over 2000' easily making it the world's deepest and most voluminous lake. The pictures do not it justice as it the lake is gigantic. Now in Krasnoyarsk well west of Lake Baikal but still in Siberia. $1US ≈ 33p. (Russian rubles) Arshan I did not love Arshan, partly because of the heat and partly because the town was not at all set up for individual travelers. It also did not help that I headed straight there at 11:00 am after arriving in Irkutsk on the red-eye from Moscow at 8:30 am. There is purportedly good hiking and a climbers’ center but I could not find it ... read more

June 13th 2012

The grammatical topics are just two of many extremely difficult elements of Russian language. One year of formal classroom studies was a great introduction to the most complicated language I’ve ever studied but practically a lifetime is necessary to understand all of its intricacies of which there is no shortage. Of course it was far better to have studied Russian than not because since St. Petersburg and Moscow I’ve been in the Siberian boondocks where very little or absolutely no English is spoken. Currently in Severobaikalsk at the north end of Lake Baikal. Tomorrow will hop on a train for 27 hours to Krasnoyarsk where I will spend 4 days before heading due south to the Tuva and Altai Republics near Mongolia and Kazakhstan. Mid-July I fly to Kazan in European Russia (precluding a 36 hour ... read more

Free Beer!

June 4th 2012

I was shocked and chagrined that free beer and wine are served on all Air Berlin domestic flights. However, equally vexing is that beer and wine must be purchased on their international flights. Interesting. After less than an all too brief 48 hours in Munich, I flew to St. Petersburg via Berlin last week arriving at the seemingly inconvenient time of 1:45 am. That was actually preferable to last year’s arrival in St. Petersburg on a Sunday in July at 4:30 pm when we were prevented from deplaning due to an overly crowded immigration hall. Once we landed, getting off the plane and through immigration last year took over 2 hours. I didn’t plan on flying through the antiquated and wholly inadequate St. Petersburg Pulkovo Airport ever again but with the 1:45... read more

Innsbruck has been a justifiably popular destination for many years but for me it will always be synonomous with the 1976 Winter Olympics. If anyone from my generation knows anything about Austria, it is probably the men's downhill gold medalist - local icon Franz Klammer. Accommodation and Food Stayed 3 nights at Pension Paula conveniently located very close to the start of the hike to Hungersburg and above. My own super quiet room, share bathroom, WiFi, and breakfast with the best coffee you'll find in Austria was 33€. The place is busy with guests from all over and the hosts are terrific. First meal was at an Indian restaurant buffet at Sahib without asking the price prior. Food was good and I did in fact pig out for sure but the damage was an unconscionable 15€. ... read more
