Innsbruck has been a justifiably popular destination for many years but for me it will always be synonomous with the 1976 Winter Olympics. If anyone from my generation knows anything about Austria, it is probably the men's downhill gold medalist - local icon Franz Klammer. Accommodation and Food Stayed 3 nights at Pension Paula conveniently located very close to the start of the hike to Hungersburg and above. My own super quiet room, share bathroom, WiFi, and breakfast with the best coffee you'll find in Austria was 33€. The place is busy with guests from all over and the hosts are terrific. First meal was at an Indian restaurant buffet at Sahib without asking the price prior. Food was good and I did in fact pig out for sure but the damage was an unconscionable 15€. ... read more

Bad Gastein is a famous spa town in the Austrian Alps. But it is no ordinary spa since the water is naturally infused with high concentrations of radon. Many people come here for treatments specifically to absorb the radon into their bodies either by bathing or spending several hours in specially constructed caves breathing heavy doses of radon. Patients swear by it but I did not come here to expose myself to radioactive gases. Bad Gastein is only a little more than 1½ hours from Salzburg and right on the edge of Hohe Tauern National Park. I think the name means High Tower possibly referring to Großglockner mountain, Austria's highest peak at 3798 meters. I did not get nearly that high but I did hike to Graukogel at 2492 m. Accommodation and Food I reserved 3 ... read more

World of the Ice Giants

That is supposedly the direct translation of Eisriesenwelt in the town of Werfen where I visited from Salzburg a few days ago. It contains the largest ice cave in the world. Also in Werfen is Berg Hohenwerfen, a medieval castle which, aside from the incredible setting in a narrow valley, puts on a very cool trained raptor show. Another easy day trip from Salzburg was to Untersberg although hiking to the top was by no means easy. That could have been the steepest hike I've ever done. And Salzburg itself was beautiful of course. I left Salzburg yesterday morning for the 1½ hour train ride to Bad Gastein where the weather has been cloudy with showers which is actually nice because I am beat from Sunday's hike. There are 2 peaks on either side of town ... read more

200 Kilometers Per Hour

That was the top speed of the train from Salzburg to Vienna which only made 2 stops over the course of the 2:45 trip. Train travel in Austria was really schwank and inexpensive if booked in advance on the internet. I did not spend enough time in Vienna as I was locked into the travel dates on the train as the major downside of getting the great deals online is that the tickets are non-refundable and the date/time cannot be changed. Accomodation and Food I booked 3 nights at Ruthensteiner Hostel on their website for 16€/night (plus 1.50€ reservation fee) in what was supposed to be an 8 or 10 person dorm but I was upgraded to a 4 person room that I shared with only one other person. The hostel was super clean, quiet, well ... read more

After the 1989 Velvet Revolution and subsequent 1993 partition of Czechoslovakia into the Czech Republic and Slovakia, it seems apparent that the Czech Republic took the nicer cities in Bohemia and Moravia while Slovakia got the gem of the Tatra Mountains. Hard to say who got the better deal. Spent a few days climbing in Slovakia's High Tatra Mountains National Park and checking out a castle. Today I arrived in Vienna. $1 ≈ 0.79€ Mt. Rysy I had previously contacted a guide through the Tatra Mountains Guide Service about day climbs of Rysy and Gerlachovský štít, the highest peaks in Poland and Slovakia respectively. Ervin called me at the pension after my arrival last Thursday and we established a pickup time of 7:30 am Friday morning which was nice as it allowed me to get breakfast ... read more

That is the actual origin of the name of Kraków founded by Prince Krakus. Three days was just barely enough for the highlights but I've got a schedule to keep. Arrived today in Slovakia in the High Tatra Town of Horný Smokovec (easy for them to say with a straight face). Will climb Mt. Rysy (8114') tomorrow and Gerlachovský štít (8711') Saturday followed by sort of a rest day Sunday then 2 train rides Monday to Vienna via (and skipping) Bratislava. $1 ≈ 3.3 Polish złoty (zł) Accommodation and Food Reserved 3 nights at Soul Hostel on hostelbookers.com for the bargain price of 40 zł per night in a 6 person dorm that was never full. The place was newly opened at the end of 2010 and looks great. A basic breakfast is included (with tea ... read more

...at Arktic Fresh Food, home of the best hamburgers in Olomouc but more on that later. The rest of the Czech Republic after Prague was a mad dash through another popular tourist destination, the castle at Český Krumlov, followed by 2 subdued places in Moravia, Brno and Olomouc, which were practically devoid of tourists compared to Bohemia. Arrived in Kraków this morning on the overnight train from Olomouc. Very nice and comfortable ride in a 6 person couchette. Took a 2½ hour walking tour at 11 am after settling in at the hostel located at the edge of the Old Town. Tomorrow Auschwitz, Wednesday tour the salt mines and Kraków's Jewish Quarter, and Thursday down to Slovakia and the High Tatra Mountains. That's the plan anyway although I'm not sure how much longer I can keep ... read more

Beautiful Prague was a great place to kick off my world tour. It was waaay more crowded than I though it would be seeing as it was the first week of May but after 4 days here it is easy to see why Prague is a major tourist attraction. As a bonus, the weather was fantastic except for my last day which I spent exploring the Prague Jewish Museum. An additional bonus is that my poorly spoken Russian is generally understood as poorly spoken Czech as many words are similar especially the numbers which is always helpful. Travel Related Details $1 ≈ 19 Czech koruna (Kč) Accommodation and Food I reserved my accommodation before I left the USA since I wanted my own room as opposed to a cost cutting dorm bed. But I was stymied ... read more

That would be Miami Beach, FLA. Arrived MIA ~7 am local time this morning, promptly board the Airport Express Flyer bus to Miami Beach, and was soon sitting down to breakfast at a deli that I frequented sometime in the last millenium. It used to be a strict Jewish deli. It is now Jewish-Cuban fusion but it works. I think the previous owner sold the business and retired to Florida where he was already living much to his chagrin. As a bonus the deli had multiple TVs showing ESPN highlights of the Boston Celtics resounding and pivotal game 2 road victory over the pesky Atlanta Hawks. A vintage performance from Paul Pierce (36 points, 14 rebounds) offest the loss of Rajon Rondo (suspension) and Ray Allen (ankle). Boston is now 5-1 this season without their opening ... read more

Many of you already know that I'm headed around the world starting tonight. All the methodical accumulation of frequent flier miles and concomitant shattering of my credit rating by procuring too many airline sponsored credit cards is finally paying off. The first leg is across Eastern Europe to Austria and Munich from where I'll fly to Russia armed wth my somewhat sketchily obtained 3 month business visa. After a week St. Petersburg and Moscow I'm planning another 5 weeks in Russia with the bulk in Siberia starting in Lake Baikal and heading back towards Moscow but veering off to the Black Sea again. I'll be sure to keep inquiring minds posted through this blog. Всего Хорошего. Jon... read more
