Over the past few years Dad has done some extensive genealogical research of the Astle family tree. He has traced it back to what ship the Astles arrived into NZ and then even further back to a town in Derbyshire called Draycott. Mum, Dad and Todd visited the town a few years ago and made some contacts who lent us a key to the local church, St Chad’s. Before going in we had a feed by the nearby lake. The recent flooding in the area could be seen with water lines well back and the park benches still half under water. Make sure you check out the video of Mum being attacked by the killer swans. The church has a scattering of Astle headstones, some hidden deep amongst trees and shrubs, others covered with giant slugs ... read more

Yippee, Shrek 3 has come out at the cinema! Sat: After a long day at Gildi. diving (training people again) Wayne and I went to see a Midsummer Nights Dream with my parents. It was held in the garden of Edwin Hall. It was really good, the actors got soaked in the rain but we were ok, sheltered(ish) under a gazebo thing. Wayne's first experience of Shakespeare went down well. We both really enjoyed it. Sun: After a morning sorting dive kit out I went to Chelmsford to meet Jan. We got tickets to Shrek 3 and went to Prezzos. Jan had pizza and I had a calzone mmmmm. After a drink we headed into the cinema. We may have been the only grown ups unaccompanied by children but we didnt care. Harribo and Shrek ... read more

So today people can no longer smoke indoors at all! Yet, I did not get to enjoy the turning point revelry the last two nights. I will take you all back to Thursday evenig. After class, I came home to a nap and some homework, oh yes, and laundry. Let me start with our laundry: we have this very interesting machine that is an all-in-one: it washes and dries! Yet it takes about 3 1/2 hours per load and they are tiny loads, so we pretty much have it going all the time it seems. I do not complain though because it's free! Our things do either come out damp (steam dry), or wrinkled, so the iron is also our friend! Then John, one of my flatmates, and I, headed to the Foundling Museum. This little ... read more

I am not too great at updating this thing on a regular basis, but I really should, because we do so much in one day that I forget the things we do after a few days. I guess the biggest thing on my mind as of right now is the security situation here. In short, early Friday morning they found two cars with explosives in them near a nightclub and then Saturday two men crashed their Jeep through the entrance of Glasgow airport in Scotland. As a result, the security level has been raised to critical, which is the highest level. In the States, I've never been one to concern myself with the color coded threat system, but it feels different when you're in an unfamiliar environment. It doesn't make me homesick, but I do ... read more

Hiya. Today is our second last day in Manchester, we are off to London on Tuesday. I'll miss the Mancunians and their accents. Londoner accents sound so whiny compared to the Northeners. Oh well i'm looking forward to London all the same, it's going to be great. On Tuesday night we're going to Frank Sidebottom's private art exhibition opening. Free food, drink and of course we get to meet FRANK. Finally. We also have to find jobs in London straight away. We can't actually stay at my cousin Tig's house until the 16th of July, so when we get to London we're staying with a friend of a friend but I have no idea how long she'll let us stay. Sooo we may have to find a youth hostel, which is why we must get ... read more

Ah. It's so nice to finally be here. After a 24 hour trip, a quick stop in Chicago to meet up with Chad, Erin and Jack, and a lot of airport waits... I arrived. The weather was rainy, but me and Brad the guy who was my travel companion on my flights braved the weather and went out for drinks and dinner. I was going to stay in, chill, and get familiar with my dorm, but the second I got in the room I was overwhelmed with a strong urge to explore. Explore we did. We had Thia and drinks. I tipped the bar tender... I guess that's not what you do here in the U.K. oops. : ) But the drinks were only 2lbs, about 4 dollars, and it didn't seem outrageous. Then we walked ... read more

The day starts out sunny and change many times between sunny, cloudy, misting and raining. Upper 60's to 70 degrees - one of our nicest days yet (except for when it was raining really hard). Started out at Castle Howard - oh my gosh! It's a private house and the family still lives there (and has for over three centuries). Not allowed to take pictures inside, and I can't do it justice trying to describe it. We bought a book about it at the gift shop with all the pictures of the rooms we visited. The are currently filming Brideshead Revisited (a movie) there (it is also where the mini-series was filmed), and we were lucky to be there on a Sunday because the house is often closed for filming on other days of the ... read more
