I was having a perfectly nice dream. I sat there, drinking tea, listening to nothing but birdsong. No traffic, no scrap man looking for a legitimate living out of begging, no van outside the house blasting Portugese hip-hop from his stereo. Just tea and birdsong. Then it was destroyed by a big, shiny robot with a vaguely female, but mostly robotic sounding voice. “The time is four. Forty-five. Ayyyyy Emmmm”. In one move, which I was possibly taught in one of my short-lived karate lessons at the age of eight, I woke, swung round and struck the robot right on the snooze button. Then I took in the surroundings and noticed something didn’t seem right. It was the light. It was, after all, 4.45 in the morning, a time I have as little experience with as ... read more

Continuing from last blog: Sunday - straightforward journey to the airport in Kuala Lumpur then onto the hotel in Hong Kong - it was going on for 11pm by the time we got there but we were very pleasantly surprised to find we'd been upgraded to a deluxe room! That never happens to us! What it actually meant was that we got a bigger room, replica of our previous one at the Island Pacific, but with a harbour view and king size bed, so very nice indeed, and on the 15th floor so really good views. Being in Hong Kong at that time meant it was no problem shopping, so we get the customary bottles of Tsing Tao from Circle K round the corner and rounded the evening off (or rather, early morning) with two cold ... read more

I need to start thinking about individual city itineraries. I have a list of places and things to do in a hotch potch notebook. I started with my first destination Hong Kong and I was amazed how hard it is going to be to fit all I want to do. I need to make some sacrifices. Four days of sightseeing all jotted down, but they are also very weather dependent. Hong Kong, rains, humidity and I hope no shakes or other.... read more

At long last, we have made it to Lancaster. The flight from Amsterdam to Manchester was a breeze, and our one night in the city was relaxing and fun. Since we were due to be home in a few short days, I thought it would be nice to ease back in to real life by having a dinner and a movie night. We had burgers and fries at the pub that was attached to the hostel that we stayed in, and went to see the new Pirates of the Caribbean film. Saturday was set to be one of the busiest days of the year in England, apart from the Royal Wedding. Manchester United was to play Barcelona FC in the Champions League Final football/soccer match. Of course Manchester was already packed full of people when we ... read more

We are heading into Lancaster to pick up Deb so she can come on the narrowboat so I thought I'd do some blogging and get you all up to date. 17 May - We got up in the morning and had a lovely breakfast at Beamish Hall. Mark had the full English of course and I had a continental. We packed up and headed to the Beamish Bird of Prey park. It was fantasic. We were only in for a few minutes and we got to hold a little owl. There was all sort of raptors in there and we walked around and checked them all out. Then about 11am we sat in the lawn area for the show. It was great.. there was only 4 of us to see the show so he did it ... read more

Its 9 days untill we begin our trip with a 14 hour journey to Beijing. The tour for Beijing is sorted courtesy of lovely Linda at 'tourchina'! Visas are done and injections have been injected- only 2 hepatitus Bs which means that I'm 94% covered :S. Being super organised, luggage is nearly all gathered as it has been for the last month! We went and bought our medical bits and bobs today, Emma has insisted that pregnancy tests aren't neccesary but I'm not convinced. Anyway theres not much to say since the only interesting thing I saw today was on obese chav on the 472 bus telling her 4 year old little girl to 'shut the f*** up', so untill China... ... read more

Today I start my blog, well really it started last year when I first decided to go to OZ. After a great 50th birthday for a very good friend, Barbara made an interest in coming with me. Hooray, a like minded person who wants to travel. It wasn't until our summer reunion gathering that we made firmer commitments to travel together. By November 2011 after searching on the internet and chatting to travel agents, we made our booking for the flights. No going back now. Time wise, the travel is tight with just under 5 weeks to achieve. Barbara had to negotiate her time off, for me we get 6 weeks holiday anyway being school holidays. After in-depth research our plan was to fly into Australia via Sydney, to take a Greyhound bus around that would ... read more

You'll have to bear with me because I wrote this blog on paper while trying to keep from falling asleep on the train to Lancaster after 20+ hours without sleep. I made it!! After 22 hours of international travel, seeing a sunset (b)AND(b) a sunrise from the same airplane window, changing planes in a snowy country that is covered in lava, making friends with a girl in which I couldn't even pronounce her name, being mistaken for an Icelandic woman multiple times, being asked by a cranky lady in immigration, "How does an unemployed person like you afford to travel?", taking the London Underground for an hour, and catching a 3-hour train through the English countryside I (i)finally(i) got to see the beautiful face of Allie Friese. Wasn't that a sight for sore eyes? Let me ... read more

We completed the full circle and arrived home four weeks ago. We were greeted with mountains of post to sort out (although, thankfully, my neighbour had weeded out most of the junk mail -thanks Angela, eternally grateful!) The house was freezing due to the boiler failure that occured while we were away and all of the doors had warped due to the extreme cold, meaning after we'd struggled to get in the front door it wouldn't then close. We should have heeded Angela's warning and used the back door! Anyway that was at 2.30pm when we arrived home and by 6pm Stan had the heating working and shaved away at the door frame so that we could finally close the freezing weather out! I spent the next couple of weeks catching up on washing (and there ... read more
