We're about to escape the unsteady ground of Christchurch and embark on some travelling across Asia to the UK, before returning to New Zealand via Canada.

Continuing from the last blog: Tues 6th Sept - a nondescript travel day. We caught the Greyhound bus from Whistler back to Vancouver and arrived around 1 p.m. All we really did was return to the Coast Coal Harbour and another lovely room, wander to the Pacific Centre to buy the five finger shoes since they're about half the price in Canada compared to NZ, and eat dinner at the Thai House on Robson Street. We had the set menu for two and it was delicious and perfectly spicy: spring rolls and chicken satay to start, chicken red curry served in a young coconut, garlic and pepper king prawns and Thai jasmine rice cooked in coconut milk, plus ice cream. Mmmmm! Wed 7th Sept - we're really winding down now as we've done most of the ... read more

Continuing from the last blog: Sat 3rd Sept - well, the Amtrak train had an internet connection alright but it didn't allow me to upload all the photos, so I finally got that finished by going to McDonalds (boo!) near Pacific Central Station in Vancouver, as we had an hour or so to kill before getting the Greyhound bus to Whistler. The journey was only 2.5 hours long and we arrived in Whistler at 5.30 p.m. The hotel (Whistler Pinnacle International) was just around the corner from the bus stop so we were soon in the room. Very nice, great views out to the mountains and an open chair lift, jacuzzi tub, fake log gas fire (totally unneccessary right now as it's still so hot hot hot!), huge cable TV, fully equipped kitchen (actually including crockery, ... read more

Continuing from last blog: Tues 30th Aug - we took the Clipper Ferry from Victoria to Seattle, a very smooth and pleasant journey of just under 3 hours. The ferry is catamaran style, two decks, plenty of space for upto around 300 people. We shared a booth with a couple from Memphis, a retired eye surgeon and his wife, so time passed quickly as we were all busy chatting. On arrival in Seattle it was about a 10-15 min walk to the accommodation in Queen Anne district - the Mediterranean Inn. Not really mediterranean in any sense, quite dated decor, fan instead of air-con and again a "kitchenette" which is actually a microwave, fridge and coffee maker - clearly the latter is a Canadian/American thing; instead of a kettle in the room you get a coffee ... read more

Continuing from last blog: Sat 27 Aug: we ate dinner at Robson Sushi again, as it was so good first time round, "all you can eat" is an excellent way to try out different Japanese food as it's not just sushi on offer and finally Robson Street is only a few minutes stroll from the hotel. Sun 28 Aug: caught a seaplane to Victoria, on Vancouver Island, at 8.00 a.m. - a fabulous 35 minute flight, smooth take-off and landing (I'd imagine due to the water). The plane was small, just a few rows of seats, 2 on one side and 1 on the other. With flying at a lower altitude than an ordinary plane, the views were much clearer; rows and rows of tree tunks in the water (can anyone tell me why? Heaps of ... read more

Continuing from last blog: So, after France we spent just over 3 weeks back in England, continuing to catch up with family and friends, etc. We sold the car, which turned out to be a little gem, just prior to leaving for Canada and the USA, last stops before returning to New Zealand. As this marks the end of our 4 months away from NZ we had mixed emotions - looking forward to discovering new places but knowing it's all nearly over. Wed 24th Aug - early start to Manchester airport, couple of hours at Heathrow then 9-hour flight to Vancouver, delayed by an hour in London and with an 8-hour time difference a very long day! Plus it took forever to clear immigration in Vancouver. However, once out of the airport it was an easy ... read more

Continuing from last blog: We're just back from five glorious days in the South of France; a perfect trip, staying with our very good friends who have recently relocated there from Christchurch, New Zealand. The sun shone every day, in fact it became almost unbearably hot most days and any shade, however small, was most welcome! We were based in Corbarieu but our wonderful hosts and tour guides ensured we had an amazing snapshot of the wider area: Montauban, Bruniquel, Cordes, Albi and Toulouse. The scenery was splendid - fields of tall yellow sunflowers, rolling green meadows and valleys, and terracotta-colured rooftops and cathedral spires dotted throughout in the numerous small towns and villages. The drive to Bruniquel, Cordes and Albi in particular was spectacular, with sweeping views across open countryside, making you want to reach ... read more

Continuing from last blog: Mon - got back to Tallinn from our short trip to Helsinki and did quite a long walk from the ferry to the hotel, LÉrmitage - this time we're just outside the old town and I think we were spoiled with the first hotel. The location is not as good, the atmosphere is therefore lacking - it's just OK really. Walked into the old town and ate at the restaurant outside the Imperial hotel - possibly the slowest service I've ever witnessed!!!! We counted how long some tables waited to even be acknowledged by a waiter (and there were only 6 tables outside; inside only had 1 or 2 tables occupied) - some took almost 20 mins! The beer wasn't cold (but we were given a glass of ice cubes??!!??) and the ... read more

Continuing from last blog: Fri 15 Jul: From Tallinn it was a pleasant 2-hour ferry crossing to Helsinki, on the MS Star, Tallink Line. The time passed quickly for me as I was near the end of an amazing book borrowed from my friend Imelda: Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts, almost 1000 pages of fantastic story telling set largely in Bombay. Now Mac is reading it. I'd recommend it. But again I digress!!! We decided to try and find the Radisson Blu Plaza on foot and it took about an hour, which was OK as although it was a little drizzly it gave us a good opportunity to get a first impression of Helsinki. I'd sum it up as big, wide streets with huge, imposing buildings varying in style, many art nouveau. It's very clean and ... read more

Continuing from last blog: After a very short period of time back in Lancashire we finally made it to Tallinn, possibly only just in fact due to some ongoing issues with the car! Whether we get to actually leave the airport in it on our return remains to be seen! Tallinn is just a 2.5 hour flight from Liverpool and with the 2 hour time difference we were there by mid afternoon. The formalities at the airport took no time at all and within minutes we were on a bus to the city (top tip - buy a bus ticket at the airport news kiosk, it's cheaper than paying on the bus). I don't know what "Viru"means in Estonian but since we were staying at the Viru Inn on Viru Street I thought we should jump ... read more

Continuing from the last blog: Tues - spent the morning in Elgin, photographing the wonderful architecture and sampling the local pies! Wed - went swimming at Moray Leisure Centre and finally made it onto one of those big waterslides! Then the big event, a 2nd birthday party complete with Thomas the Tank Engine birthday cake. Thurs - a full day out in the stunning Cairngorms mostly - started with a tour and wee dram at Glenlivet Distillery, then on to Drumin Castle, Tomintoul (and the whisky castle), Braemar and Ballater, via incredible views and miles of green open space. Fri - back to Preston by train and bus, through Aberdeen and Glasgow. Scotland has been an amazing experience, what with all the ruined castles, cathedrals and abbeys, luscious greenery, all round views, glorious weather, friendly people ... read more
