My hands smell like garlic. Yes, I know you wanted to know that about my travels. It’s important, not really, but I was cutting garlic earlier for my dinner (tonight was traditional Swedish food, mos and kottebulle (mashed potatoes and meatballs) yep. I was lazy but I spent nearly an hour and a half cooking eggplant napoleon last night so... it’s a trade off. Anyway, point is, it’s weird, typing and smelling garlic. So I’ve learned some important things. Danish speaking: Jeg vil gerne have flæskeskeg halvsteg. I will have roast pork, rare. Yeah, makes no sense but amuses the hell outta me. Let’s see, I went to a Swedish class on Monday, it’s Swedish level 2. Didn’t do so well. Actually, cross that out, I did great considering the people in front of me have ... read more

Sweden is famous for many things. Volvos, the Nobel Prize, producing Australian Open (among others) tennis champions, and of course, Swedish people themselves. From the backpackers perspective, it is also notorious as being a bit of a no-go zone due to astronomical prices. Fortunately, I was able to lodge with my old school mate Carl Aberg (better known as Ahberg), the man who produced one of the all-time great cameo appearances at Lorne for Pier to Pub weekend a couple of years back (which some will recall). He is now beautifully set up in Stockholm in a fantastic apartment a short walk from the city centre. I couldn't have asked for a better guide to the city, or better digs for that matter. Among others, one of my key aims for my time in Stockholm was ... read more

This past weekend I set off for the capital of Sweden, Stockholm. It all started out as a good idea. We found airfare online flying out of a different airport about 2 hours away from us for a fairly good price, all we had to do was take the train and we would reach the airport. So Thursday night came and I went to the train station to meet the girls I was going with and they were late, so of course I stated to freak out, the train was running a bit late too (thank god) so I tried to stay calm, but they still had not gotten there. Then the train arrived and was in a hurry to get out because it was running late, so in my broken French I started yelling at ... read more

Time really runs quickly. It's only four days left now before I'll go to Moscow and I still don't realize it. The last three weeks has been really intense. I've been to England to visit my friend Sean in Middlesbrough and a few days in London. I've been to Halmstad and Gothenburg to visit some really good friend I hadn't seen for a very long time. Made two visits at the Russian emabassy in Stockholm and finally have a Russian visa! Met Larissa, the girl I'm going to do the train-part with and feel very relieved that it's a very nice and sensible girl. I've tried to get my interary in China and SEA sortes. Been taken the last of ten injections (vaccine). Tried to see all my friends I want to see before I'll go ... read more

Oooops - we found this blog in the archive, and realised that it hadn't been uploaded....so here it is, only a few months out of date. As many of you know, we are now (March 2008) safely home, settled in a new apartment and have decided to finish our blog, starting with this one! More to come soon....and now back to the middle of October in Scandanavia We only spent a few days in Sweden....we had decided to make it a short visit so that we could have time to head further north into Norway. Jen's brother Chris is travelling with us while in Scandanavia, which added to the fun. In Stockholm we stayed at a campground just outside the city to keep our costs down....we were already feeling the wallets get lighter....Scandanavia is bloody expensive! ... read more

This past week has been full of E. Not the drug, that would have made it far more interesting I’m sure, but Enthusiastically, Exhausting, Exasperating, Emptying, Enjoyably, etc. See, it even ended with an ‘e’. Its been crazy. I finally slept last night, due to a great attempt on my part to relax before bed and the acceptance that my wonderful friend Magda has gone on to Poland, but I’ll be talking to her on Facebook in no time, and that my project is nearly done, and that my life is finally putting itself into some semblance of order here. And ... I’m on the boat again. Its 6:50pm the sun has set the sky is a purpely blue maze of clouds and I’m on the water, and its gorgeous. I could easily live right here....especially ... read more

Stockholm: 4-5 October 2007 Stockholm is a very slick place, everything is efficient and clean - a bit like Germany but without the war-mongering! Arrived at Arlanda airport at about 9pm and got a train to the city centre. As soon as I left the station, I knew I was going to like the place, strips of bars abounded and very friendly people started chatting to me almost immediately. Speaking of which, the moment I opened the door to my 8-person dorm at the hostel, I was confronted by a crazy German bloke brandishing a bottle of Absolut vodka. He persuaded me that it might be a good idea if I matched him drink for drink (which was actually quite easy as it was the vanilla variety which took the edge of it!). The friendliness of ... read more

Inför resan. Packa, vaccinationer, planera, skriva listor, packa om, tung väska, vad ska man ha med, köpa resesaker, tänka, drömma, packa om igen. So goes the days of our lifes... Planen är, i stora drag: - landa i Bangkok, några ... read more

Copenhagen Weekend This weekend was a bunch of events! Again, we barely stayed in our own city, we will explore it…one day. We’ve lived here two full weeks now and have not yet spent a weekend here :D This weekend was my friend Ry’s birthday in Copenhagen so Amanda and I left on Saturday morning and went to be tourists before the party. We walked through most of the main squares and saw the government buildings, the main street was jam packed FULL of people it was like a sea of moving, shopping, money spending madness. There were so many shops in each direction, with people spilling in and out of their doors, and was absolute madness to try and navigate. Throughout all of this, there were, every few metres, men who had a game of ... read more
