When I was a little girl every Christmas Eve my Mum would read me ‘The Night Before Christmas’. It was a lovely tale about Santa Claus - accompanied by brightly colored pictures depicting his wooden house in Lappland with a snowy roof and candles glowing at the window. Santa would be beavering away in his cozy cabin to make lots of presents for every child in the world - obviously with the assistance of his elves (we all know that Santa couldn’t manage this task on his own - well unless he bulldozed the log cabin and opened up a multi-line production factory in Luton). Anyway, back to the point I was making….which is that I’ve found where Santa lives and it’s the village of Jukkasjarvi in Northern Sweden - well it looks very like “The ... read more

Armed with our blondish hair, popular swedish names, (and superhuman powers of course), we took scary flight number two to Gothenburg, Sweden. Thanks to Liz's friends Tess, Ryan, and baby Liam we had familiar faces to meet us as the airport, house us, feed us, provide us with clean laundry and showers (yay!), show us around, and above all provide us with some excellent company! Tess made us American pancakes and we practiced our swedish as we explored the older part of Gothenburg. Who knew that Gothenburg is actually pronounced (ok, are you ready for this all you American kids?) YO-TE-BURY. Yeah that's right, no goth, and definitely no burg...huh. No wonder no one in Europe knew what we were talking about when we told them we were going to Gothenburg. The number seven was also ... read more

Hej Hej min familj och kompis, I got home from Kiruna yesterday and I am still exhausted. We were only there technically 2 nights. The other two nights were spent on 16 hour overnight trains getting there and then back. Try sleeping in a train seat, not the best. It even affected my dreams. I had one that I was so bored on the train that I left and went to the beach where I was riding an ostrich and then a weird hippo/wombat appeared and the ostrich jumped on it and started riding it so we ran along the beach together. Odd I am aware. We arrived in Kiruna fresh faced and ready to brave the cold in this little town in the tippy top of Sweden resting above the Arctic Circle. We put our ... read more

Everything is starting to look like Christmas! The whole town is lit up and everyone puts lights in all of the windows (a Swedish Tradition, I think it has to do with the darkness). Yesterday we went to the oldest part of Orebro called Wadköping (pronounced Wadshoping) for a Christmas market. This market takes place every Sunday in December and has lots of Swedish Christmas items and food. The houses on the way to the market are also all lit up with decorations, but they are nothing like the houses in America. I tried to take a picture but it was already dark, even though it was only 4 o'clock and they didn't turn out. I have not done very much traveling outside of town lately, I did make it out to our relatives though which ... read more

Welcome to Stockholm During summer this year we have tried to do some sightseeing in our hometown - Stockholm. We thought it could be fun to publish one entry with photos from here so you can get an idea of what Stockholm is like. Since the majority of the readers of this blog are not from Sweden we thought why not using this forum to advertise Stockholm a little bit. It is a very nice city and it is well worth a visit. In summer that is. Not even we would recommend anyone to come here in winter really... One of the highlights of any visit to Stockholm is the well preserved Old Town. The Old Town is very different from the rest of the city in the sense that it is virtually free of cars, ... read more

See, I told you I’d update it after the weekend; and in this case its a good idea! This week is going to be insane, we have school from 9-4 nearly every day and the one day we didn’t I was working at the preschool (yesterday). So the weekend went like this, Friday night project based outing to a club, Saturday night helping on the barge with a concert, and Sunday night, Harry Potter. Friday night we prepared some ‘interventions’. The project we’re working on currently is to re-establish social connections between people in the night club setting. Currently, people tend to cluster in small groups of friends, and are generally closed to opportunities for social connections be it for purely social interaction reasons or for romantic ones. People tend to get protective of themselves at ... read more

So its 1:38am. I’m getting fairly used to ‘this time’. Its my catching up time. It usually lasts anywhere from 1-4 hours. I’ve just paused my work on a paper that I’m writing since I’ve been researching and writing for about 3 hours and haven’t even hammered out a full page. This is disturbing but maybe it means the beginning of a great paper because of the thought I’m putting into it. Maybe not. So I’ve made a list of things to talk about. Its...extensive. I really need to update this blog a few times a week rather than once every 3 as I think this will be another long one. As an aside and for your audio expansion needs, I’m listening to two Danish groups: Analogik and Natasja Saad. One electronic with Balkan tones, and ... read more
