Cause I bet I've been in more. Now equipped with a ghetto-fabulous, have-more-pages-added passport, the real travel has begun. But I left off in Belgium, so I'll work my way back. The night of the second day in Belgium was interesting, to say the least. We went to a Congolese restaurant out on one of the metro lines on Brussels. It took a little while to find, because for all it's benefits, lonely planet does not give good directions. When we finally found the street with all the restaurants on it, we picked one that looked as inviting as possible, and sat down. The only problem with this plan was that we don't speak whatever language was predominately spoken (I don't know what language is spoken in the Congo), and my passable French only got us ... read more

Our first (would-be) 'White Christmas' was magic, albeit decidely devoid of the white fluffy stuff to which the title owes. We braved the craze of Dublin airport two days before Santas arrival, and managed to smile at the mayhem that reigned, despite the lengthy queues in every direction. It was a huge relief to touchdown at Skarvsta airport where we were happily greeted by a very heavily pregnant Maria and an excited, though nervous father-to-be, Luke. It was absolutely wonderful to see Maria 'glowing' and the soon-to-be new arrival was a huge talking point among all of the family throughout the festive season. Christmas was celebrated on 24th December at Maria's parents' home. After a delicious brakfast, we got oursleves all spiffed up...it suddenly iseemed Christmas had indeed arrived. And while we were a long way ... read more

I was a bit worried going into the coldest part of my trip. Minus 20 is NO JOKE! How do u even get ready for something like that when you come from a tropical climate? But I left Paris for Sweden & made my way up north to Kiruna! Once out of the plane, I was greeted by the sight of ICE BLOCKS (in the open) with the words "Welcome to Kiruna". Oh its cold but not as fortunately not as bad as I imagined. Checked into tiny Hotel Kebne & made my way to the ice hotel. Had planned to spend the night but it was fully booked up & very ex. I was glad I didn't end up spending the night because its FREEZING! Fun to walk round, check out the rooms (all individually ... read more

We had a lovely time in Sweden over Christmas! Andy, my parents, and I spent about 2 weeks there, although Andy went back a few days before I headed to Africa and my parents headed home. Most of the time was spent taking walks in the snow, exploring winter Sweden, and relaxing in the house. The second night there, we went to see Tomten (Santa) in his home! We went in a one-horse open sleigh, just like the song. It was a really beautiful evening, with rhyme covering the trees, snow covering the ground, and blankets covering us. The moon shone brightly and illuminated the night. It was a magical time! (Even though we went with a group of 30 people from an office in Edsbyn, who got progressively drunker and louder as the night went ... read more

After a few failed attempts I finally made it to Stockholm. Even thought it is a fairly large city, it doesn’t feel like it. All of the buildings are old and really beautiful, even the places that are new have an older look to them. We started off the day by shopping (of course). There are only about 10 stores in Sweden that people shop at, so even though there are streets and streets lined with shops, they all just repeat themselves. An example of this is H&M, there is one on every corner (literally) and they have pretty much the same things in each one, but they are all still really crowded! After shopping we met up with some friends who had just got back from Latvia. We ended up just walking around the city ... read more

From mass murder to plutonium factory Sweden is a very safe country to live and travel in. But of course we have our share of problems too. Since we published one blog entry with the upside Stockholm we would like to balance things and publish one entry focused on the rough and uncut facets of this gem of the Baltic Sea we call Stockholm. We hope you will find this interesting too. Like in virtually all major cities in the World there are homeless people in Stockholm. They are usually not very visible but if you know where to look they are easy to spot. I the last couple of years beggars have appeared in Stockholm. Before they were virtually non-existing but now they are very common. However, it is very obvious that the majority of ... read more

What has the month of December brought? A lot of work! Although, not the paying kind so that’s unfortunate though I doubt I would have had time! Christmas in Sweden and Denmark is done nicely - they light up the city streets, Christmas trees are in plazas everywhere and we were singing Swedish, English and French Christmas carols (Jul songs) at the preschool. I’ve since downloaded a Swedish and Danish Christmas CD so I can sing along, lol. I think the best way to explain what I’ve been upto is in photos and videos, I’ve already explained our bathroom switching project, so the videos are here: http://jonaseriksson.blip.tv there’s a few there. Here on my Flicker account: http://www.flickr.com/photos/8517602@N08/ there’s photos of the toilet project as well as photos from the Half Machine Symphony Orchestra performance.
