You must all be updated seeing as everyday a million things happen that my cyber world following must be made aware of. First of all: I tried Vegemite. Foul. But good for you... Second of all: I have a "job". Ok so I've only worked one day. And I got paid the equivelent of 8 US dollars for 5 hours. I am an illegal immigrant practically...I worked in the kitchen at Kalmar making burgers, potatoes, salads, and fallafel. It was fun and I ate alot...I am going to try and work there more. Third of all: I have joined the choir...I think. I went to the first practice last week and there was a lot of Swedish talk swirling about and I felt like a lost little lamb. Plus I had no idea about the melodies ... read more

Hello, hello! Once I managed to land myself a ride through Sweden, I relaxed into the passenger seat and started to work on my navigation skills. Of course, it was only a few short hours before we were whipping u-turns and sneaking into saunas (sometimes you have to be creative when you are camping and need a shower!) We wound past the fjords, over bridges, making our way south and stopping for periodic hikes and sightseeing in and among picnics. Unfortunately, the second day of our journey, we stopped for a picnic breakfast, whereupon Claudia managed to lodge a knife solidly between her thumb and index finger. Needless to say, I had a crash course at driving standard, and managed to get us to the hospital, following a local that didn't speak English no less) with ... read more

A country famous for blondes and Ikea, as well as spawning some great bands such as The Hives, Dungen and The Radio Dept (OK, so I admit they were also responsible for ABBA, Europe and Roxette as well), I was looking forward to a place full of beautiful people and a creative, liberal and progressive culture. The train from Copenhagen to Stockholm was possibly the most scenic of the entire trip. Pity I didnt have a Swedish soundtrack to accompany it (if you haven't heard any of the bands I have mentioned above - I would really suggest you do). With beautiful forests of autumn leaves and picturesque lakes of pristine water, the landscape was simply stunning and reminded me a lot of the landscape down in the South Island. All enjoyed in a comfortable, quiet, ... read more

Big Entry ... rest your eyes for a second first... Friday at school was hectic, we were shoved into groups (luckily, I’m in a good group of three, everyone is great there, but these two especially I get along well with so I’m happy to be in a good group!) assigned the assignment, told what to get started on, and left alone; a lot of the program is being left alone. I guess its all part of the master’s thing - but its really interesting to see how responsible everyone’s become in such a short time, and how ready for action we all our, such a good group of people working together!!! Friday afternoon Amanda and I headed home, and began packing for Berlin. Our bus left at 22:30 so we had to leave the house ... read more

Last week was hectic. Let’s recap. Amanda and I moved in on Sunday. The toilet exploded Sunday night. Oh have I not mentioned that yet? Let’s start at the beginning. We began the move in on Sunday while our landlord was still moving out. As this was the case, and there was decidedly no “hiss” (elevator) at our apartment, hauling all our stuff up the stairs was super-fun. Considering that Amanda and I went for a run that morning, followed by a few sets of squats and lunges, then packing, then hauling up the stairs, we were wiped. Karin and Jojje drove us (in their very Swedish Volvo) to the apartment and we met Pete, Amanda’s friend along the way who donated a ton of towels and bedding left from a past student, we were overjoyed. ... read more

*grml* Muss also bestellt werden.

So there we were, another lovely standard and bright coloured flight, but this time for 1 Euro cent !! (with taxes and luggage allowance actualy about 25Euro). Cheap as chips, so we'll forget about the yellow coloured seat backs for now. getting into Stockholm Västeras airport at around 11pm, so not all that early. Last bus thankfully still waiting, so we got into town after midnight in the end, then having to find the hostel, which we managed after a bit of confusion (had lived there before in 1994), only to find it being in..... a basement.... Needing to make up bunk beds in a dorm room, in the complete dark, trying not to wake up too many people, wasn't our idea of a smooth arrival. There were 2 Spannish and an Irish guy on the ... read more

The whole town celebrated Orebro Day yesterday (Thurs.). This is a celebration of the town, and the university is very involved in all of the activities. All week there have been preparations, including a BBQ on Wednesday evening where we decorated banners and made up chants to sing. There are a lot of students participating in all of the events. Thursday started with a picnic breakfast outside of the castle, followed by all of the students marching through the city cheering and competing for the loudest group. After the parade, there were contests between all of the groups at school, including The Internationals. I wish I could say that I had watched all of the activities, but, students were given a discount at many of the shops so the girls and I spent the majority of ... read more

Having endured yet another boring summer at the office I was finally gearing up for my first long escape from work, and the thought was very refreshing. This time I had scheduled a few weeks to catch up with old friends; and circumstances had allowed for me and Joanne to be able to visit Thailand at the same time. And not only that; I had learnt that my old friend Manuella from Timor Leste was on holiday in China at this time - a hasty arrangement and we decided to meet up in Hong Kong. It was looking to be a busy trip with lots of interesting reunions which made my cynical heart smile a little. I had prepared by bringing loads of fish, the only European staple to meet with a high enough approval rate ... read more
