Well, I left on Friday the 9th from Brussels Airport to Stockholm. We managed a cheap flight with Sterling, an outfit from Denmark. It was good for such a short flight. Anyway, we arrived without any problems, exchanged our money, and then wandered through everything until we found Johan and Robin. Monica spotted them first, much to my embarassment. We walked through the airport, thinking to eat there, but everything was closed. There was a Convention going on and they were doing a conga line with some women dressed up like Carnivale. You could see alot. Anyway, we took the airport train to the Central Station and ate there at O'Leary's, which I had experienced before. It's an American Irish pub. They have alot of them in Sweden. They're based out of Boston. I had a ... read more

I spend several days in Stockholm wandering around in this unfamiliar city. Strangely, some store fronts still had Halloween decoration while some stores were already decorating for Christmas. Despite the cold weather, Gamla Stan, the old town, was lovely and lively. With narrow stone streets and old buildings, Gamla Stan was a very charming area to walk about. We walked to the scenic Stortorget, the big square, to see the vivid orange, yellow, green buildings. These buildings were a huge contrast against the depressing winter sky! We visited several shops and immediately I fell in love with these little stuffed mythical creature, Tomte. Tomete, in Scandinavia folktale, watched over farmer's house and children to protect them from misfortune. In modern days, I think Tomete is more like Scandinavian Santa Claus. I bought one, perhaps, this Tomete ... read more

It has been very cold the whole time I have been here, but for the first time it truly feels like Swedish winter. Since the time change it has started getting dark at about 4:30 in the afternoon and it will only get darker earlier! Also, today when I woke up I looked outside and to my amazement there was a blanket of white covering the ground! It's really nice to look at the snow from my window, but to go out in it is soooooo cold! I put on all the layers I have and can manage, but it looks like I'll have to go shopping for some more winter clothes!... read more

Hello everyone! Welcome to my blog that I will use mainly during my journey with the ship Gunilla between the 10th of November until the 31 of January, but hopefully it will be used for more exciting trips! I will start by explaining some of the basic things about the trip as well as the ship. As most of you know, Gunilla is a three masted bark that is 50 metres long (164 feet) and with masts of 34 metres (112 feet) (That we actually climb, all the way to the top!). The trip will take us to Cádiz (Spain), Safi (Morocco), Mindelo (Cap Verde), Salvation Islands (French Guyana), Paramaribo (Surinam), Georgetown (Grenada) and finally Cartagena in Colombia (see the map). This means that christmas will be celebrated on the Salvation Islands and new year in ... read more

Life changed dramatically in winter 2007. The only way to escape was to run far far away from home as fast as I could. I booked the flight to Stockholm and took off a week later. My best friend of 20+ years was waiting at Arlanda airport when I landed. Not every moment is a happy moment when you travel, especially when you are at life's crossroad. I can't remember when was the last time I aimlessly wandered around a place. That day, a fire in a subway station detoured me to an unknown location in the city. I was completely lost. Without a map, without any one's phone numbers, without understanding Swedish, somehow, I managed to get myself onto the right bus heading to the right direction. I suddenly realized, somehow, things will just work ... read more
