Today I was able to enter the great cathedral next to my house. Here's a link to a picture I took of the cathedral itself. Later I'll try and upload pictures of the inside. http://img259.imageshack.us/img259/2332/img2154as0.th.jpg It was amazing. I went with my Polish roommate, and although she thought it was impressive, I could tell she didn't find it as amazing as I did since she's lived in Europe her entire life and has always been surrounded by such great structures. We walked around the inside and I was in awe the entire time at how big and beautiful everything was. When you are here in Europe, you really get an appreciation for history, unlike in the USA. I love walking down the street and knowing that people have been living here for over 2000 years. It's ... read more

I’m in Madrid with my host family but I’ll get to that later. Time to play catch-up. I didn’t get to see much of Valencia. There was a really modern part of town that was created for the 1992 World Fair. It’s a must see! The buildings were so futuristic and it was an entire area of town so it worked out really well. We walked around that area for a bit before departing on a paella experience. Paella was invented in Valencia so it’s necessary to eat paella there regardless how little time you have in the city. Before we ate our paella we went out on a boat tour through the rice patties in Valencia. It was very cool. We spent a couple days in Barcelona but like Valencia, I didn’t feel like we ... read more

Europe » Spain » Castile & León » Salamanca September 25th 2007

So I have just recently returned to Salamanca, for those of you who do not know, Salamanca is a little city in the region of Castille y Leon in Spain. Its famous for its university, which on top of having a world famous law school and medical school, also has one of the greatest party scenes in Spain. Its just a shame I'm not much of a party girl. I guess I could blame that on my age, being almost thirty now and engaged, but that excuse flies about as far as a wooden duck with a lead weight attatched to it's butt. No the truth is that I have never been much of a party girl even throughout my teens and roaring twenties (actually my twenties have really mewed more so than roared). Oh well, ... read more

There is a bar in my hostel! Lovely. Pool tables and a sun deck. I´m actually just happy there is a bathroom in my room with a blow dryer. Haven´t seen one of those in awhile...hahaha. BTW, I still have a little bit of a cough but my runny nose and fever are definitely gone. I´m still drinking Airborne and popping those Vitamin C lozenges. I will overcome!!! Kerri and I walked over to Puerta Del Sol last night and took some cool nighttime pictures. We traversed around and then ate some "tortillas", which were actually omelettes at Zahara Cerveceria and Cafe off Gran Via. Nice to people watch again. The sangria tastes better here than in Barcelona. We then walked through Plaza Mayor. I liked that it was very chill at night. People just hanging ... read more

Thank you all so much for your comments. We feel loved and encouraged to keep writing :) Pippa´s sister showed some disdain towards her via email after seeing the pictures from Paris..I guess while your slaving away on your PhD and your sister is sauntering around Europe it can be pretty annoying..unfortunately, our pictures from Madrid will do little to make Alix feel better. (sorry Al .. I love you!) We got off on less than a promising start on our trek to Madrid after our flight was cancelled and we ended up having to take a train..which took 16 hours and unexpectedly used up 2 of our 10 Eurail passes. But once we finally walked into Los Amigos Hostel (24 hours after we were supposed to) all of our travel woes dissipated. WE LOVE OUR ... read more

So, this past weekend was the festival of Barcelona´s patron saint, La Merce. It was absolutely crazy. It was basically a four day long celebration with tons of parades, fireworks, and about a million and one concerts of all different types of musicians. The city was so absolutely jam packed, there was barely any room to breathe. On Thursday I went, with my group, to the Magic Fountains which are right in front of the Palace, which used to house the king and queen. The Fountains are situated right down the road from Plaza de Espanya and a former bull fighting arena (which they are now making into a giant shopping mall...booo). Anyways, so, you get to Plaza de Espanya and there are two huge towers on both sides of the street and there are colossal ... read more

Back to reality (for a short while).... sitting in a cold Amsterdam while yesterday at this time I was having lunch in a 35 degrees hot Seville !!! The last week was spent in Seville and Tarifa in the sun, sun, sun. Julie and I were heading down to attend Lorries birthday party (who used to live in Amsterdam but has now moved down to Madrid) which she had organised with her friend Rick, who also was going to celebrate his 40th. Little did we know that the planned Saturday party would turn out to be a week of great parties and meeting lots of interesting people from all over the world. Their friends and family were flying in from literally everywhere to attend !! Tuesday we were a small group that took the ferry over ... read more

Since our last blog we have covered quite a lot of distance. So here goes... We left Bamberg and headed down the (yet another lamely named) Romantic Road where we popped into the almost ridiculously well preserved walled city of Rothenberg. Whilst fighting our way through hoards of grandparents I almost expected to see lepers begging on the streets and criminals hanging from the rafters. We then headed down to Munich and 2 very wet days. Luckily we stayed with German friends of Paul and Michaela´s, named Steffen and Susanna. They kindly let us hang out at their stylishly modern pad, showed us around the city, and fed us sausages and bretzels. The rain got a bit much after a while and we wound up watching a movie then hanging out in the beer halls. Our ... read more

So after our epic journey of over 3,200km we arrived at our destination of Malaga in Spain. It was great to catch up with Rob’s family again and also have a bed outside of the van for a change. Gee, 9 nights in one place, that’s the most time in one destination since the end of March (almost 6 months). Fred and Dora Brown - The couple with no fixed abode! Our timeshare was in the resort of Mijas Golf Club, although we were not actually on the course. We spent the first few days exploring the area, catching up on some much needed sun, frolicking on the beaches and relaxing by the pool. Oh of course the food and wine! Good red grape, at an even better price, tapas and fresh paella what else can ... read more

Finally made it to another country...just when I was getting sick of baguettes and croissants. Spain is definitely a different world. Its history is pretty interesting. A lot of religious wars (esp. against the Moors), invasions and it's still pretty young as a democratic country. But I guess tourism is thriving here and its economy is growing because of it. I can see why. There's a lot to see and do and it feels different from the other parts of Europe that I saw. It's as if a lot of the culture has remained intact without as much "western" influence. It's hard to explain. I really wish I could've seen more of Spain, especially Madrid and Seville. Maybe next time. Traveled down Las Ramblas, Barcelona's main shopping strip. Lots of street performers here...and they're all very ... read more
