Pippa & Maya

Pipaya

Best friends since the first day we met in college. No, really. BEST FRIENDS. Now that we're done with college, in an attempt to continue escaping reality, we are off on a 3 month sojourn to see a lot of Europe and a little of India with the hopes of achieving an epiphany, the likes of which will lead us to our mutual callings.

So, when I initially planned this trip, I decided that after the drudgery of hostels and venturing by my lonesome through foreign territory, I needed to reward myself with a few days of TLC surrounded by the comforting familiarity of re-visiting facets of young Maya's life in Koeln. In reality, however, I must admit that with time approaching of arriving in Koeln, the excitement was tinged by as much apprehension over the unknown as I had for Croatia and Bosnia. For, the stagnant memories I've been carrying around would have to adjust and re-focus with the changing facade of both the city itself and the people I associate it with. It's a grueling testament to the fact that time, in fact, does not stand still. And indeed, there were some familiar sights and friendships that may ... read more

My last stop in the Balkans before flying off to Germany was a national park located between Zadar and Zagreb. The trip there from Split was a bit strenuous, especially considering that I had an early morning flight to catch out of Zagreb the next day. This in combination with the fact that the bus from Split arrived there late meant that I only had a total of four hours to explore a park that should really be given the better part of a day to fully appreciate. Even without the glitches, I knew I'd be cutting it close when I planned this trip, but I decided the lakes needed to be included no matter what, since no Pipaya adventure is complete without a trip to see some waterfalls :) Plitvice came through and more than ... read more

It's been so hot around here that even the palest of white people are starting to resemble me. To remedy this utterly unacceptable situation, I decided to head to the coast and get seriously working on my tan. So, here I am, sporting bug-eyed sunglasses, slowly sipping on my martini, lazily wading around the turquoise water off the Dalmatian Coast .... ok, not quite, but if you're heading this way, that is what YOU should be doing :) In yet another attempt to save on accomodations, I booked a room outside of the old town. My difficulties in discerning distance or topography off of google maps meant that I didn't discover exactly HOW far out of town it would be until I embarked on my fun-filled uphill climb from the bus station....with my luggage... in the ... read more

Pit-stop in Mostar

So, I had been debating back and forth whether to make a stop in Mostar on the way to Dubrovnik, as the train ride from Sarajevo to Mostar is touted to be one of the most scenic routes in Europe. However, stopping there would cut into my already limited time in Dubrovnik, and all I could gather about what Mostar itself had to offer was .... a bridge. Bringing up this dilemma with Adnan's cousin, he INSISTED that it was worth the trip. So, that was that. Besides, no trip to Bosnia and Herzegovina is complete without actually stopping in Herzegovina. And...am I glad I did! Even with the unexpected added connections, double bus break-downs on the subsequent leg to Dubrovnik, AND double-paying to get onto the bus to Dubrovnik.... the trip to Mostar ranks as ... read more

Last night, I took the overnight train from Zagreb to Sarajevo. Sarajevo has been on my hit-list of must-see destinations since I was a wee one... stemming from watching the war unfold in Bosnia on TV growing up in Germany. Now that the war is over, I wanted to see how the city has recovered from the rubble that I had always associated with it. More recently, I have also been intrigued by the unique history of this city as the cultural meeting ground between the Austrian-Hungarians and the Ottomans. Between the vicious mosquito attacks and the temperature fluctuations, there was little sleep to be had, but I was in good company in my compartment. Besides, even in the sleep-deprived state, seeing the Bosnian country-side emerge as the sun rose was simply spectacular. Amidst the beautiful ... read more

Pipaya checking in from Zagreb as the starting point for ˝Off to the Balkans˝ - this time, with Pippa present in spirit :( There were no flight attendant-ejecting issues, and though I did not have all the ingredients for Pippa's concoction for a restful sleep on the flight, I made due by compensating with upping the dosage of wine. However, the remaining leg of the trip was a bit of a process - mainly due to my penny-pinching. Somehow, while booking, spending 9+ hrs at Frankfurt airport for the subsequent connection to Zagreb didn't seem like such a bad idea. How bad could it be - I LOVE airports. It's a feast of sights of people dressed in their national garbs and sounds of people conversing in all different languages. Most importantly, there's an excitement in ... read more

Unfortunately, we had very limited access to the internet while in India. There was, in fact, a little internet hut with two computers in my village - we made it a routine, (after awhile just for kicks) to walk down to the stall to ask to use a computer, at which point we would be told (very matter-of-factly and unapologetically) - no internet today. Mind you, we walked there EVERY day and the response and delivery never changed - a very interesting model to base your business on. In any event, this leaves us to sum up 5 weeks worth of experiences in just a few sentences - now in hindsight. After 6 weeks in Europe of packing up our bags every three days to set off to new places and people, we found ourselves rooted ... read more

Hmmm... so DON'T BOOK INTERNATIONAL FLIGHTS VIA ORBITZ!!!!! After making our way to Amsterdam airport at 4AM, we were told at Check-in that our connecting flight to Delhi from Zurich DOESN'T EXIST!!!! Swiss Air had contacted the Orbitz agent at the time of booking that the flight would be discontinued, but we were issued the tickets anyway. We ended up spending the day flying all over Europe to various different airports, pleading our way onto any flight that would take us to India. Things didn't look so good for us at first - Swiss Air told us that the next flight they could provide us would be on Nov.25th.... one month away!! Other alternatives offered included going to Zurich and spending the day in the airport, getting a flight to Bombay and then finding our own ... read more

Cologne, Germany was our destination following Munich. Now, some of you out there maybe scratching your head, thinking.... what´s there to do in Cologne? Well, Paris may boast the Eiffel Tower, Rome may have the Colosseum, but all pale in comparison to the fountain at An der Eiche.... a center-point in young Maya's formative years. That´s right, Cologne is the birthplace of the illustrious, world-renowned, Maya of Pipaya fame. Here, along with the help of some old friends, we gave Pippa (also of Pipaya fame) the grand History of Maya tour through Cologne. It´s funny how much your perspective changes as you grow a little taller (even when this growth is somewhat minimal). I kept telling Pippa things like.... "and here we have coming up the hill we used climb up and play on".... then, upon ... read more

Gruesse aus Muenchen!!! Fräulein Pipaya reporting from Bavaria. So, in Munich ve vere introduzed to zhe concept of free valking tourz - ve know vhat you´re thinking, but NEIN, ve did not have to eavesdrop.... they vere actually FREE!!! Coming here, ve didn´t really know vhat to expect from Munich, other than a major Oktoberfest hangover.... but the city has so much more to offer than sitting a table in a tent for twelve hours, drinking liters of bier while listening to silly polka music. Now, ve are not implying zhat ve did not sample zhe local offerings (incidentally, dark wheat bier is the way to go ..... see photographic evidence below). But this is only because through our valking tour ve began to appreciate how major events in Munich´s history somehow always seemed to involve ... read more
