So after our epic journey of over 3,200km we arrived at our destination of Malaga in Spain. It was great to catch up with Rob’s family again and also have a bed outside of the van for a change. Gee, 9 nights in one place, that’s the most time in one destination since the end of March (almost 6 months). Fred and Dora Brown - The couple with no fixed abode! Our timeshare was in the resort of Mijas Golf Club, although we were not actually on the course. We spent the first few days exploring the area, catching up on some much needed sun, frolicking on the beaches and relaxing by the pool. Oh of course the food and wine! Good red grape, at an even better price, tapas and fresh paella what else can ... read more

Finally made it to another country...just when I was getting sick of baguettes and croissants. Spain is definitely a different world. Its history is pretty interesting. A lot of religious wars (esp. against the Moors), invasions and it's still pretty young as a democratic country. But I guess tourism is thriving here and its economy is growing because of it. I can see why. There's a lot to see and do and it feels different from the other parts of Europe that I saw. It's as if a lot of the culture has remained intact without as much "western" influence. It's hard to explain. I really wish I could've seen more of Spain, especially Madrid and Seville. Maybe next time. Traveled down Las Ramblas, Barcelona's main shopping strip. Lots of street performers here...and they're all very ... read more

On Tuesday afternoon I arrived in Madrid Barajas airport. I eventually found the metro which was about 300 metres away but felt like 3 miles with the 15kg on my shoulder and the 21kg dragging wearily behind me. Once i had made my way to the Hostel Inernacional de Posada, I found it clean and secure, with clever little magnetic watches for keys into your room and a locker. As i was in a female only dorm i thought it safe to make friends with the others. One f them was a very nice (and ye you guessed it) australian girl from London, on a backpacking trip around spain. Anyway, as neither of us cared to eat alone, we went out and enjoyed a really nice tapas dinner courtesy of las fatigas del querrer, a bar ... read more

I arrived safely here! Despite sitting on gum somewhere along the way, all my bags were in Alicante when I arrived!! It was a long flight, I don't do much sleeping when I fly so I watched a few movies, bought a neck pillow and despite my efforts to sleep managed about 30 minutes total during the 3 flights I took. Oh well, I can sleep when I am old : ). I caught a tour like bus and we (me and 4 other students in my program) rode to the Hotel Hesperia Lucentum http://www.hesperia.es/hoteles/Hesperia-Lucentum/?source=googes&gclid=CMC2h7-S3I4CFQzclAodaQJA8g, which was really nice and the location of the 3 days of orientation. One of the first things I noticed about the city is the presence of graffiti...everywhere. I got checked into my room and then grabbed some pizza with a ... read more

Wow guys, Guess what. Yes, it has happened. I´m sick. After getting back from the beach yesterday, my medicine had weared off and I was once sick and feverish again. Runny nose, ick. I took more medicine and rested for a bit. It was the last night of the festival so I was all excited to get out and do more. Also, I´ve been waiting to go to this club in El Raval, the party was called The Sunday Joint, with hip hop music and stuff. The flyer reminded me of home. I went out to eat and actually didn´t really have a good dinner. I ate at the bar of this resaturant, Moka, and it was mediocre. When I got back, I felt worse. With a kick in the pants from a phone call to ... read more

Quick Update: Checked out my school today. It´s called PINAR DE LA RUBIA. Everyone in the English Dept is sooo nice & seem to be happy to have us there. There´s another language assistant at my school named Emma. She´s from London & seems very sweet. We´re going tomorrow to sit in on some classes & meet some of the students! Wish me luck. Things still going really well here. Still shopping around for a gym. Went out on Saturday night w- my former professor & friend, Ángel. We had a blast! Really good to see him again, as you can imagine! Went out to dinner & latin dance club. Ahhh Spain... As always, miss you, love you, have to go, time running out at internet cafe...... read more

Ok, Friday I woke up, went to see 2 other BAD apartments, went grocery shopping, had dinner at 330 and packed. Left at 9:00 PM to go to the Mediterranean for the weekend to a friends house with 8 other people. We get there at 1:30 AM after driving almost 5 hours through pouring rain. The house is Rocio's, Paula's best friend from high school. Her dad has 5 houses in different parts of Spain and a house in London and Argentina....WHAT LUCK I HAVE!!! The house is beautiful. It has an in ground pool and is in the middle of this huge national park, so there are only a few houses here an there. The landscape is scrubby, with lots of short trees, mountains, and We play cards and have drinks until 3:30. Next morning ... read more

Ay, ay, ay… am I ever tired. It’s hard to keep up with the Spanish on the weekends. I’m back in tranquil Segovia after a long and exhilarating weekend in Madrid. We went as group on Friday and did the tourist thing, catching glimpses of La Puerta del Sol (the shopping hub of Madrid), El Palacio Real, La Plaza Mayor, and El Parque del Retiro (Spain’s Central Park). At first glimpse, Madrid is really big and has lots of traffic like most large cities, but people walk at a much slower pace and everything seems a bit more relaxed. The buildings are all old and beautiful, and the Metro is absolutely spotless! After lunch in the park, we went to El Museo del Prado, one of the world’s greatest art museums with over 7,000 paintings. It ... read more

So spain has been a great start to my trip. First I got to spend 2-3 hours waiting for Alex at the airport... aparently there are two airports in Barcelona.... I guess it didn't help that he didn't have ANY of my flight details. oh well. anywho, once we found eachother there weren't anymore buses or trains to Girona so we were forced to pay 160 euros (!!!!!) for a taxi ride with the world's smelliest cab driver ever. im serious---it smelled worse than ass. actually, he had to stop mid trip to go to a bathroom. personally, i think he stopped cause he shit his pants cause about 1-2 minutes before he asked if he could stop it definitely smelled of shit. very very gross. so those are my memories of barcelona....... Girona, however, has ... read more
