24th September 2007 The drive from Madrid to Nerja took us south through the centre of Spain, via dry, open country with millions of olive trees (no wonder the food is drenched in olive oil), then via spectacular granite hills and mountains. On the news we had heard that part of the Costa del Sol area had been declared a disaster zone. This was due to a huge downpour of rain and a hail storm which then resulted in some terrible mudslides. As the news report was in Spanish we were not sure of exactly where this had happened. We soon found out! When we made it to the coast we drove through some towns that were covered in mud. There were cars barely visible from the muck and lots of debris in the streets. There ... read more

Well here goes nothing I suppose... I'm not sure how blogs work, but I know that I need to do something, because this whole journaling thing is just really disorganized for me and hey, I can't sleep anyway so why not try an online journal?! I am in Madrid, going to school, doing way too much homework, spending way too much money, and being way too lonely... Ok it isn't that bad I'm just really tired! I haven't quite figured out the whole study abroad thing yet, I think I will know more when I go back to the states honestly. All I know right now is that it is very different than I had imagined and not really in a good way. At this point I recommend against STUDYING abroad if what you really want ... read more

As many of you may or may not be aware, I am something of a homey gee. When I am not chilling with my peeps on various stoops in various countries, I can be found wandering the streets aimlessly, cassette boom box on shoulder, blasting the likes of Jazzy Jeff and the occasional track from Kool Herc and the Hercoids. Growing up on the mean streets of Regina taught me the importance of vandalism and grafitti, and though not much of an artist my self, I became a local afficionado of Saskatchewan's up and coming grafitti scene. From the aerosal cans of K-Pas, T-bone, and UK came inspired tag's belonging to the 'quantity over quality' school of street art. I was a convert, and remember being immensely impressed by the notion that these people were capable ... read more

I woke up this morning with a slight cough and sore throat. Yikes! Also a little hung over. I took tons of vitamins and medicine this morning and decided to have a chill day to unwind. I"m getting into a habit, party party and then rest rest. hahaha I had breakfast at the Bocatta and then watched the Castellers. They are For Real. They are those people that make human pyramids. No joke. I was feeling a little tired and sleepy but wanted to get out and about in my last day in Bacrelona so I wandered to the Parc de la Ciutadella where there was a big ass circus. My mistake, tooo many kids. I actually just wanted to go to the park and read. Oh by the way, I finally found a bookstore that ... read more

Last night, I went down the street to have dinner. I took a mental note of that restaurant you suggested, Eileen, Troubador. I saw it when I was walking. I peeked inside and there were Filipino people working there. I went in and sat at the bar. I had sangria, more tapas and yumm Catalan Creme Brulee. I was stuffed. Definitely been eating more than normal here in Spain. I chatted with the bartender who was filipino and he actually spoke Spanish very well but not English. Anyways, he was real nice. I ended up chatting with the couple next to me who were from Ft. Lauderdale. I told them about my trips to Boca and we ended up keeping each other company for the rest of dinner. It felt good to finally have a normal ... read more

Almost at the end of our 10 day pre-holiday holiday to Spain. We spent a great few days in Granada, the highlight of which of course was a visit to the Alhambra palace - the main tourist attraction in the city. Our next destination was Osuna, a small place we chose on the map which was on the way to Seville - we chose it purely because it was going to be a way of breaking the journey (over 4 hours by bus from Granada to Seville) and we were interested to see an anonymous, small town. The bus ride to Osuna took around 3 hours, mainy through dusty plains with rows and rows of olive trees. Our hotel was only a short walk from the bus station (most places were only a short walk away ... read more

The wine festival last night was great! It was actually only 6 euros and you get a wine glass and go to all these different tents. It was right by the waterfront on Moll de la Fusta so it was a great night out. After like 5 glasses of I don't even know what kind of wine I was drinking, I was pretty satisfied. hahaha. You should have heard me try to ask for wine in my spanish accent. Hola! shar doh nay por favor? It was pretty funny. After that, La Merce began. Lots of fireworks and parades in the street. I walked over to La Placa Reial and they were having Tango and dance lessons. There were like hundreds of people there. OF course, I jumped right on in and met some cool Spanish ... read more

Ola Bo & Dud, Another week in Spain goes whizzing by. We were going to move on last Sunday but it was extremely hot and not a good day for travelling - good job we’re so flexible in our arrangements. It was on Monday that we moved on about 100miles to Camping Playa Oyambre, just to the west of Comillas. We’re using several points of reference to find sites but some of the directions have to be followed to be believed and the Spanish clearly do not believe in pointing out where sites are. Emily (our sat nav) has her moments - good job that Hilda has her trusty map book to hand and Howard has a good sense of direction. The site manager was very welcoming and apologised that they had closed the pool -to ... read more

Okay, so I typed a long entry a few days ago, but for some reason the internet died right as I was posting it and all was lost. I had an interview the other day and have a job teaching English four days a week in the morning paying 17 euros an hour, and I have another interview on Monday at 1 for a job teaching at businesses, I'm not sure how many days a week...but now I'll be earning enough money to pay rent and other random expenses each month, so the money I saved up during this last year will probably go toward travelling around Spain, and a possible trip to Morrocco my friends and I are talking about. In the near future we are taking a trip to either Toledo or Segovia for ... read more

Its now 431 in the morning. I have to go to look at apartments at 930 tomorrow....and I can't sleep....AND i'm supposed to with Paula's (my friend who I live with's) dad. I'm gonna be a mess. I hope I can fall asleep by 5... So heres the lowdown on what I've done. I landed at 3:00 yesterday after being up for 24 hours. I took a 1 1/2 hour nap, got up, showered, went to see Ratatouille (in Spanish of course) then went out for dinner and drinks until 1:30. We ate tomatos with shaved goat cheese, croquetas filled with ham and cheese, and fried potates covered in jamon serrano, onion, and something else...I can't remember. Woke up this morning, oops I mean this afternoon, at 1:30 (Thursday) just in time for 3:00 dinner (garlic ... read more
