My ten month adventure is on a roll,a giant, speed gathering roll. I arrived to Madrid Tuesday the 25th to perfect weather and an optimistic outlook. I flew quite lovely on British Airways with my own tv screen & surprisingly good meals. However it was bloody cold leaving the plane in Gatwick. My hostal was perfectly located in the center of downtown, seconds away from 100s of tapas bars and the awaiting sangria ... of which come to think of it I've had none, shame. Saving that for later I suppose. I arrived to an Australian opening the door to the building who somehow automatically knew I spoke English and began conversing w/ me completely throwing me off and not letting me check exactly what floor my hostal was on....Needless to say, many ups & downs ... read more

I had to do that knuckle counting trick (turns out there are only thirty days in September) before confirming that indeed it IS the end of my first month here. Now I just do that about 8 more times and then I'll be back home.. I've decided I'm lucky to have all my appendages. This is for a few reasons outside the generally obvious ones. I've noticed an absurd amount of amputees in Madrid. I'd estimate that I pass by, sit by, buy from, or accidentally stare at at least 10 people a day missing an arm or a leg, or both arms or both legs. I'm wondering if there is any cultural relevance there or if it's a big city thing or if I honestly just now have realized the sheer blessing that it is ... read more

Hola! I made it to Salamanca after two days in Madrid. The travel was very easy, and now I am trying to set up this travel blog to see if I can get it to work for you guys. I figure it is the perfect thing to do at 2:00 am when I cannot sleep because of this time change buisness. Anyhow, I am settled into my appartment, and my land lady is wonderful. She seems like my mother here in Spain. I also am so lucky to have my friend Rachel here to help me figure everything out, like where my classes are, how to find the dance studio, where to get coffee and Tapas, and all those other important things. I have a wonderful roomate from Morocco, and one from the states, and we ... read more

I left France on another cold morning, leaving the contest at semi-finals stage as the surf dropped right off. Kelly Slater exited in round 4. He was unlucky, snapping his board and couldn't find a second good wave. Still, his surfing and ability still sands out and the spectators just love him. Mick Fanning eventually went on to win the event and I suspect he has the world title firmly in his grasp now, notwithstanding disaster. They say San Sebastian is the cultural centre of the Basque region and I know for sure that among it's 180,000 odd inhabitants, there are few that must spend much time at home around dinner time. Everybody is out, seemingly doing a tour of duty through the impressive maze of tapas bars and restaurants that line the old quarter. Just ... read more

¡Hola! Had a great time in Madrid last night!!! Thankfully I made it through our boring meetings. Meetings in Spain are not like meetings in the US. In the US they shove food & coffee down your throats. They may even play games & have ice breakers. At least then there´s a 50/50 chance that you´ll stay awake. In Spain, they write on your schedule in BOLD LETTERS: WE WILL ONLY BE SERVING AGUA. IF YOU WANT ANYTHING ELSE WE SUGGEST YOU GO UPSTAIRS TO THE BAR & PURCHASE YOUR OWN. Needless to say I had a hard time staying awake. Now, onto my request. What I need from you all is for you to send me American type things that I can use in class . For example, magazine or newspaper articles, food wrappers, cds, ... read more

Wow I can't believe I have been here for over a month now. It feels like forever in some ways. I feel like I am becoming more and more accustomed to everything everyday, and everyday I think that I must be as used to living here as I can be... clearly I am still learning tons because I look back and realize how much I change everyday. I am starting to feel torn away from my life and friends in the states as I get new friends here... Almost like enjoying myself here and having friends here in some way betrays my real friends... That sounds sooo dumb. Wow I guess I only write in this blog when I am confused and frustrated... maybe I will say some good things first... It is really great that ... read more

Wow, it's been a long time since I updated this travel blog. I will try and go back and fill in the year and half that's missing (and what a year and half it has been!!) but for right now will start with my current adventures. After spending the summer travelling around I am back on the Rock (what I call my little village of Moia) up in the mountains of Spain. I'm back for another year of teaching English to the Catalan citizen of this quaint little place of 5000 people. Last year, I was accompanied by Evelyn, a Canadian, and Ausias, a Catalan who speaks perfect English. Together we wrecked havoc and kept each other from getting too lonely/going stark raving mad while on the rock. This year Evelyn and Ausias are gone, Evelyn ... read more

Ater my restfull stay at the Hostel Posada, I packed my bags again and headed across town to the four star hotel in which I was being boarded courtesy of my new employers, for an induction course along with my 600 other colleagues from around the world. Still sore from lugging my bags around the day before, I gingerly picked up my 36kg and marched onwards. Three metro lines, countless metro stairs both ascending and descending, a litre of bottled water, four bruises, half an hour, and one gigantic sigh of relief later, I arrived in the lobby of the Hotel Convencion. After checking into our rooms, and enduring one badly scheduled meeting later. We sat down to a dinner of cold mousse more or less the shape and colour of the italian flag. My friend ... read more

I finally have my own bank account here in Madrid with Caja Madrid, one of the major banks here in Madrid. I just got a new debit card today, so I'll be able to use it around Europe. The process was pretty easy, but I had to pay a 27 euro fee because I'm not a citizen here in Spain. They had to declare me as a temporary resident, not a permanent resident. When you come and stay in a new country, these are the kinds of things you just have to deal with and accept :-) Tonight a bunch of my friends and I will be having dinner, and Ali is fixing some Guatemalan food for everyone, and we'll all have a good time. Did I mention I am going to Morocco the week after ... read more

The Reina Sofia was a lot different than the Prado, for sure. Totally all modern art. I actually enjoyed the Prado more. There were some cool pieces at the Reina though. The Tropical guest exhibit was pretty trippy. I did like all the trippy Dali´s and Picassos though. And yes, the Guernica, is pretty fascinating. From there, I actually wanted to just chill today. I was moving so fast the past few days in Madrid it was time for some more down time. I went shopping and bought a sweater, yay. From there, I was pretty tired so I took my siesta and ended up going up to the Sun Deck at the hostel and rekindling my relationship with my boy, Santiago from The Alchemist. I was definitely engrossed. While on the Sun Deck, I met ... read more
