My tour of the Alhambra had a rough start. A stomach upset from the shrimps I thoroughly enjoyed for lunch on my last day in Morocco kept me close to the hotel for a whole day. That or something else morphed into a terrible cold overnight, when the temperature in the hotel room was far below tropical paradise levels. Feeling cheated of a portion of my holiday, I stole a toilet roll from the bathroom and chose a seat at the back of the tour bus for the two-hour ride from Torremolinos to the Alhambra , a Medieval-Renaissance castle originally built when the area was Islamic. Out the window, the semi-mountainous terrain was picturesque, except for those places were people on top of the hills treated the steep cliffs as garbage dumps, a strange practice in ... read more

Thursday, October 5 I arrived in Torremolinos well after lunch and was ready for a meal about 4 – 4:30. I walked along the promenade for fresh air and to find a restaurant. At the first one, it was both too late and too early to eat. At the second one, Rancho Maritimo, the waiter said “of course” to my request for a menu. The beer was sharp but heavy. I chose hake steak, which was very fresh and deep fried. (Later I saw this dish spelled at various restaurants as hake , hacked, haked, and hack.) The accompanying French fries were marvellously fat, cooked in olive oil. Spanish onions and tomato were the attractive fresh garnish. I picked up sangria and water on the way back to the hotel. a city, one of no comparison that i have yet to stumble upon...with great pleasures my fingers do the electric slide across these keys to the rythm of my thoughts, hoping to do justice to barcelona. arriving on a saturday morning, roughly about the time of midnite, the only importance that this day holds for me...is that it is the day of our arrival. after an anxiously rough sleep behind a bench in the airport...we do the morning rituals of nomadic explorers that spend the night in the airport...morning restroom breaks and coffee during the occasional people watching (which by the way is completely different in another country than in the states, i'll save that for another time) before we gather our thoughts, belongings and sense of direction. barcelona hugs the coast of the meditterranean sea ... read more

I tried to sign up others from Patch Barracks so that the German tour company would provide an English speaking guide for our tour to Andalusia, Spain for Passion Week. In the end we only had four couples. However, at each stop our German guide tried to link us up with an English speaking guide. I was very impressed with their willingness to go above and beyond for us. 18 April 1984 Wednesday. So early Wednesday morning found us on another charter flight, this time from Stuttgart to Almeria, Spain. Upon arrival all 40 or so of us boarded the tour bus that would be our home for the next week. Our first destination was Grenada. Our first stop on the tour of Grenada was to the Alhambra. This palace/fortress was constructed in the 14th century ... read more

Crossing over the Spanish border at Ceuta (which was still in Africa) was surprisingly easy, given the likelihood of drug trafficking. We finally reached Ceuta itself on a Spanish bus for the last 7km, and with clocks going forward an hour, we only had around a 2 hour wait for a ferry back across to Europe. We strolled around Ceuta, taking in some snacks and yoghurt, before returning to the port. The ferry trip (122 Pta) was quite relaxing and took just under 2 hours, reaching Algeciras around 10pm. Unfortunately, we didn’t get much of a view of the Rock of Gibraltar, although there were lights on it. We had no problems finding accommodation in Algeciras, with plenty of places on offer around the port area. We settled for the Pensione Conchita, which was more than ... read more
