For our final blog of the trip we see white snow, pink flamingos, green jungle and deep blue ocean. So without further ado, here we go.... Leaving London we flew to LAX, slept in the airport for the night (surprisingly tolerable) and then flew up to Vanvouver, where we got to Whistler about 30 hours after leaving London. Phew! We stayed with Dan's brother Nick and his partner Sophie in their critically over full flat. It turns out Whistler has a housing crisis with all the pre olympics building that is underway there for the 2010 Olympics. Happily we didn't mind sleeping on the floor at the foot of Nick's bed as compared to some of the places we have been it was perfect luxury! Dan's other brother, Ben, and his wife Kat were also there, ... read more

Just a short pre-christmas blog update.... From Aswan in Egypt we took a Felucca on Captain Nemo's Washington boat down the nile to Luxor. We suspect he wasn't the real Nemo we had been recommended and it was one of many Washington's, but his crew (Mahmoud and Ahmed) managed to safely navigate us down the nile for 2 days and nights so it really didn't matter. The first night we went into Mahmoud's own nubian village and had dinner (separate from our hosts) and socialized (the men in one room, the women in the other). It was a wonderful experience, and they were very friendly to us despite considerable language barriers. The next morning Dot had a bit of the Delhi Belly, or in this case the nauseous nile, so she tried to sleep while Dan ... read more

(Sorry for the lame title, we've been up since 3am) Since our last blog your intrepid (or at least tepid) travellers grabbed their packs and headed to the Lycian Way. The Lycian Way is a long distance hiking trail along the southern Anatolian coast. We were dropped of by a crazy old "taxi" driver who took us on a hair raising ride to a cliff face in the middle of nowhere. After getting lost (twice, before we even found the track) a friendly beekeeper (carrying his bees) and an equally friendly goat herder set us on the right path. It was a long walk down hill to Kabak beach, passing under unstable cliffs to the tune of loud rumbles. We found the only other tourists sleeping over in Kabak and joined them in the only joint ... read more

Our latest exciting installment begins in the walled city of Dubrovnic. The city is spectacular, with beautiful marbled streets, stone buildings and truly enormous walls surrounding the entire city. Just as mind boggling was the huge cruise ships turning up 2 or 3 at a time and gorging out thousands of tourists to flood the city. Those walls are designed to keep people out but I tell you they are darned effective at keeping them in too, worse luck. We decided to pop down to the newest country in the world, Montenegro. Shiny it wasn't, but Kotor on the coast was oozing charm. The little (yes, walled) town had a gritty charm that Dubrovnic had lost with the tourists. We hiked up the cliff face to the crazy castle ruins crumbling over the precipice. The train ... read more

Since Cadaques in Spain, our journey has turned to the east, and towards the distant city of Istanbul... Before leaving Spain we went to the bizarre and fascinating Dali Museum in Figures, designed by the man himself. It was replete with sexual imagery, clever visual tricks (a room with a sofa and fireplace becomes a glamorous woman's head) and giant sureal statues. Even the building was mental, lined with giant eggs. Cool. We drove back into Spain and the town of Carcassone. The town has a fascinating history. The Romans built a huge wall here in the 3rd century AD which is still standing. It has had another enormous wall with towers added in the centuries since by first the Cathars and then the kingdom of France. The town on the hill is therefore surrounded by ... read more

Since our last blog we have covered quite a lot of distance. So here goes... We left Bamberg and headed down the (yet another lamely named) Romantic Road where we popped into the almost ridiculously well preserved walled city of Rothenberg. Whilst fighting our way through hoards of grandparents I almost expected to see lepers begging on the streets and criminals hanging from the rafters. We then headed down to Munich and 2 very wet days. Luckily we stayed with German friends of Paul and Michaela´s, named Steffen and Susanna. They kindly let us hang out at their stylishly modern pad, showed us around the city, and fed us sausages and bretzels. The rain got a bit much after a while and we wound up watching a movie then hanging out in the beer halls. Our ... read more

We´ve been on the road for 3 weeks or so and there´s been no time for blogging. However the rain has started falling again, so here we are. The trip started off well with a visit to Dan´s cousins in Edinburgh. Great city full of fringe festival. However things took a turn for the worse as we headed up to north Scotland in our wee rental..... We arrived on the west coast to find it the home of the Midgy. We had been warned, however we underestimated the buggers. To understand the midgy - take one sandfly and mix it with a mosquito, shink it down to microscopic size and clone it a billion times. The tenatious little bastards really tested our patience. Between them and the fairly cold wet weather we were driven from the ... read more

Dan wants to give you a line by line itinery including planned dates and mode of transport (eg camel on Thursday) but I have drawn the boring card to save you all. This will be our Blog site for the next quite a long time. We are new to this so hopefully we will manage the technology and keep you entertained and informed as we go along. We are a little short on photos having just put our lives in boxes.... but while in London (strictly Windsor) we waved to the Queen - as you do. Honest. She's there. Philip is driving her to church. Now dossing in Chiswick with Kate and Neil who are very tolerant of homeless kiwis. First stop Scotland.... this blog will get more exciting, we hope!... read more
