Leaving Granada after having arrived less than 48 hours before, we were on a bus for a 12 hour ride to Portugal! To make the trip longer, the Spanish law states that bus drivers must stop at least every 3 hours to keep them from falling asleep, sooooo, we were on and off the bus all day long. Finally we were there by evening where we had dinner, and fell into bed. Laura, Natalie and I still hadn´t caught up on sleep and had a tour to catch at 8 the next morning so we crashed! The next day our Irish tour guide, Michelle, took us to Lisbon (we were staying at Costa da Caparica, a beach town outside of Lisbon), and we saw the Monastery of San Jeronimo, the Discoverers Monument and the Tower of ... read more

After leaving Porto Venere and the Five Villages, we spent three days cruising through the Mediterranean until we popped out into the Atlantic Ocean through the Straits of Gibraltar. It's a strange experience to stand on the deck of a ship and look at Europe on the right and Africa on the left. They are only 15 miles apart at the Straits. What a way to learn geography! The Rock of Gibraltar is on the southern tip of Spain, on two square miles (pop. 30,000) owned by the UK. There is a NATO base there now. Across the Straits is Morocco on the African continent. There is talk these days of building a bridge between the two, which would indeed be an impressive sight -- as well as an impressive feat of diplomacy no doubt. Once ... read more

I would just like to say that Lisbon is way way better than Madrid. Much better looking and friendlier people. I found a cute little hotel to stay at in the central part, so getting to places is easy walking except for the hills! Which is a good thing because the bus system here is super crowded. Anyways, I've been gorging myself on pastries and cafe and taking little trips to Castelo de Sao Jorge, Torre de Belem, and the monastery of st. Jerome. All very beautiful places. I particularly enjoy the statue or whatever it is of Jesus across the bay. It's kinda like the ones you see in Brazil, with the arms spread open. Of course, I also managed to squeeze in some shopping,,,mostly for snack food items from the El Corte Ingles, which ... read more

As soon as we landed in lisbon we grabbed a hostel, dropped our bags and headed to Sintra, a small little town outside of Lisbon with an amazing palace and moorish castle. The town was stunning, so colourful, on a steep hill and the views from the palace were incredible. Easily one of the most beatiful towns we´ve been too. Each room in the palace was packed with little treasures, and extravagant furniture, so opulent and fit for a royal family but homely at the same time.. loved it! The next day we went to belem and checked out a chess piece - this rook/castle built on the waters edge. we managed to find a restaurant called FLORESTA, and were obviously drawn to it purely by its name.. rather risky yes, however proved to be scrumptious. ... read more

So I´m in Lisbon and I could not be happier. The plane ride was easy enough and I was fortunate to see one of those wonderful fast-forward sunrises one only experiences while traveling directly East at 600 mph. Approaching Lisbon, we flew right over the south-westernly most tip of Europe and I was able to pick out each city along the coast until we got to Lisbon itself. The best part, however, was the bus ride from the airport. I unintentionaly sat next to two French girls, Elodie and Marie-Laure, having never really talked to a French girl, I was delighted to find it very easy to strike up a conversation immediately. By the time we reached the hostel, we were friends... and.... get ready... Maurie-Laure said I spoke excellent French. This may seem trivial, but ... read more

Guess what, another outdoor bar scene... Great times, very hot. I was in Lisbon during February, July and October. The first trip was mostly checking out the city. I was only there a couple days and stayed at the Marriott way north of the city close to the irport. Next time I stayed in the Sofitel, a 15 minute walk from the happening parts of the city! The Sofitel is a great value and is newly renovated. Also close to the bars ;) I'll add more later.... read more

The first big trip that I took when I was in Spain was an overnight bus ride to Lisbon, Portugal. We stayed there for 4 days. We had a good time in Lisbon as we went out to a few real good restaurants and bars. We walked around and saw many historical sites and also took a day trip to Sintra where there were 2 different castle complexes that we visited. ... read more

Alan and Richard were planning on going on to Morocco and they had had some jabs before they left England. I had not, so I decided not to risk going with them. So off they went, leaving me sad and lonely again, with a couple of hours to kill before the next train left for France. To avoid a repeat of that hellish journey, I decided to get into the queue to make a seat reservation. After a long wait, I discovered that there was a supplement payable to travel on this train. Since I had not got any change, I was forced to get in another queue for the currency exchange, just before the guy behind the counter decided to leave and help one of his mates for half an hour. Back in the reservations ... read more

Upon arrival, first priority was again to find somewhere to stay. It didn’t take long to discover that our books that were supposed to be up-to-date weren’t. The first hostel didn’t exist, the second had hiked up their prices to out of our range and the third, the YHA for which there were accurate directions, was full. As they had done in Paris, they found us somewhere else. This looked like it could have been a brothel, but we were grateful for anywhere. We set off to try and find a beach, just to discover that the nearest one of any quality was a half-hour train ride away. We went back to the hostel to get our Inter-rail tickets, just to discover that it was locked. Depressed, we spent the rest of the day checking out ... read more
