Hello Everyone! We were very excited about Portugal since their language is Portuguese (obviously), which Heather is fluent in and I can get by from what I learned in Brazil, but also this was going to be the first time that we would be somewhere with warm beaches since we started traveling over a month ago! We had no specific agenda, and really didn’t know what Lisbon had to offer, but that was our first stop and a great introduction to the country. We took and overnight train from Madrid, and we slept so-so, but we weren’t going to meet Estrela, the guy we were going to couch surf with, until after 8pm due to him being at work. So we found the luggage lockers for our stuff and decided to start walking the town to ... read more

We went to the Castelo de Jorge this afternoon after we took the metro to get our tickets for the night train to Madrid tomorrow night. Everything here has to be done between 10 and 1 or after 3pm because EVERYTHING CLOSES so that you can go eat!! The castle is from the 12th century, most of the walls are still standing.....it's the view that's amazing 360 degrees around, you can see all of Lisbon and across the estuary. I could imagine ladies in long gowns and mantillas wandering through the castle whispering. Then we went to the cathedral and caught a part of a mass...with a priest with a good voice. The old city that we explored is built all on the hills with tiny winding alleys. Lots of the houses are covered in tiles. ... read more

just got done with dinner, we came exploring down some side streets looking for fado. and we found it. i wish i could explain fado....but i can´t with any good verbs so instead i will tell you that it is very emotional, and when they sing all you can think about is the music. you forget to talk, you forget to eat, if they´re really good you forget you have a ciggarette in your hand and you are captured by their voice. we had the pleasure of listening to 3 different singers and 2 guitarists. one of the guitarists was very old and reminded me of grampy. he was incredible. there were 2 men and one woman. the woman reminded me of you sarah, she had on a red dress with these incredibly high silver heels ... read more

We're in the capital of portugal. It's still early..only 11:30 so haven't done any sightseeing yet. We're staying in the Bates motel...3 floors up, you have to ring the bell to be let in and the manager sleeps right next door. The room doesn't have a good shower, the bathroom is the size of a closet, there's not phone in the room..there's a box and a cord but no phone..the tv's not plugged in and the airconditioning doesn't work..oh yeah, the lights out in the bath too. I'll write more later.... read more

so in lisbon they have one of those contests where you take a cow an then decorate it whatever way you want. very funny. i remember when they did that in new york, but i forget what those cows look like. you´ll notice a picture of my favorite cow here. so we finally got laundry done...man oh man...we needed that. i guess there´s no such thing as a laundrymat where you do it yourself here. someone else has to do your clothes.....anyway we were starting to smell and had to buy new underwear and t shirts cause we hadn´t done wash since we started this trip..it was awful. it´s hotter here than i thoguth it would be and mom and i both agreed it was a good idea for us to head south first, i can ... read more

Well, I loved Sintra . It is a great little town about 28 km from Lisbon. After arriving in Lisbon in the early morning of May 13, I immediately took a train to Sintra and, thanks to the train conductor, I found some great accommodation adjacent to the train station . In the end, I stayed four nights so will happily act as Australia’s ambassador for Sintra having seen all of it! I walked through the hills up to the Moorish Castle and then to a bizarre eclectic castle known as Pena Palace. So many different styles and mostly should just be described as over the top. Also climbed the highest peak in Sintra, Alta Cruz, at 529m. Not really a warm up for Mt Kilimanjaro! I took a bus trip to Cabo de Roca, the ... read more

1) Portugal is definetly and defiantly not Spain. Before I arrived, I too would have been hard pressed to distinguish between Portugal and its larger Iberian cousin. Portugal does however, retain an immediate and distinct atmosphere of its own, although this atmosphere is hard to define. I suppose it seems somewhat Carribean or South American to me, although having never been to the Carribean or South America I'm not exactly an authority on the matter. But it is certainly multicultural and seems much more exotic than other european countries 2) Until I recieve conclusive evidence to the contrary I will continue to believe that all portugese people can sing very well. I mean really sing. One evening in Lisbon a group of people from my hostel and myself went to watch some Fado music. Fado ... read more

Hello Reader. Mike and I, after our tour through Morocco, were on our way to Portugal. Lisboa was first on our list. We had contacted a couchsurfer there by the name of André Lino. How he came to be our host was rooted almost entirely on the fact that he had hosted Kyle, who we also hosted in Valencia just before Las Fallas. Kyle, as he does, left such a good impression with André that all we had to do was drop his name and André was more than willing to put us up for a couple of nights. Unfortunately we didn't meet him until after spending a night in a ghost hostel... but I'm getting ahead of myelf. Our trip to Lisboa from Tarifa made a stop over in Sevilla. Mike and I had about ... read more

Hi again. Well, we made it back from our trip safely, & not a moment too soon. While we enjoyed ourselves immensely, we also overdid it a bit, & feel like we need a holiday from our holiday this time. Portugal was great though - quite different from Greece (which is all we have to base it on at the moment). People didn't bug you every 5 seconds to eat at their restaurant or buy their market products, which made things much easier, but at the same time, hardly anyone spoke English, & none of the road signs or subway stations had an English equivalent on them to know where you were going, so it was much harder to navigate around. However, the transport systems were still effective & easily enough understood after living in a ... read more
