wherearewenow - Ben Johnson

Ben Johnson I am sorry that I wasn't able to update the blog to include all of the traveling adventures, but after returning to the US, experienced a big life change and needless to say the wherearewenow has changed to whereamInow. I had great adventures after Europe, especially in countries like Kenya and India - so if you want to know more, just ask.

Hello Everyone! Three weeks left in Europe, one more week of traveling around with Alan, and two more weeks of doing absolutely nothing in Berlin but relaxing. In the one week left of touring we decided to squeeze in a few days in Krakow, a few days in Berlin (to give Alan a proper city tour), a couple nights in Heidelberg to visit a college friend of Alan’s, before ending back in Munich on the last night of Oktoberfest—thought it was a good idea to end where we started! We saw many things in these last weeks so sit back and [View Full Entry]

Hello Everyone! Good news! Laila said yes to Fred at the wedding so that was a big relief. It was great to go back home for a month to see all our family, unfortunately we didn’t get to see as many of our friends, but we were quite busy helping with the wedding. Before we knew it we returned once again to Europe for a month, but this time we had a new side kick. Our great friend Alan was going to be touring with us for two weeks of traveling fun. The first time Alan visited Germany was with me [View Full Entry]

Hello Everyone! Heading into unknown territory and we weren’t exactly sure what to expect. When we told some of our German friends that we were going to Romania their first response was, Why? Well, my reason was to hunt and kill Count Dracula, but I don’t think they would have believed it if I’d told them. The other reason was to utilize our rail-pass because it was only recently that Romania and Hungary were included on the Eurail Ticket. We had a few bumps in the road, one major one, but in the end we survived our adventures into the unknown. [View Full Entry]

Hello Everyone! Four countries in seven days, that is less than two days per country, but we had “somewhat” of a plan set out to try and conquer Scandinavia in this short time. This was going to be a real challenge for us though because it’s very expensive in this region of Europe and we, of course, are attempting to be serious budget travelers. Well, after 12 train rides, one bus, four ferry rides (two of which were very frustrating), and zero nights in a hotel/hostel, we conquered Scandinavia and had a great time, so without further ado, the story goes [View Full Entry]

Hello Everyone! Back in Germany for some more traveling times! Our time in Europe was running shorter and shorter with each passing day and there were so many things left for us to do, especially in Germany. We had a busy two weeks ahead of us, starting with the Love Parade in Berlin, then to the south of Germany to visit with my host family from when I was an exchange student, and on to tour around the area a bit before heading north to Lübeck. Techno music may be an extinct beast in the US, but in Berlin it is [View Full Entry]

Hello Everyone! We had five days to make a whirlwind tour of the Benelux and we decided we would start with Amsterdam, head to Brussels, and from there visit Luxembourg. We didn’t have the easiest time getting to Amsterdam because we were running about two minutes late to the train, but as we ran to our platform it appeared our train was still there so we jumped on. The train immediately started to move just as I realized it was the wrong train, our train (also running behind) would have been the next one to arrive. We stopped at the next [View Full Entry]

Hello Everyone! Finally we get a little rest and relaxation from running around and there probably isn’t a better time to be in Berlin than the final week of the World Cup! After taking a little nap, Daniel laid down his house rules. 1) You are required to sleep in (preferably past 11am). 2) You are not allowed to talk to Daniel until after he has had his first cup of coffee. 3) You can not do any work of any type before 12pm, absolutely no exceptions what so ever. I learned rule three the hard way…I did laundry at 10am [View Full Entry]

Welcome to Switzerland!
Welcome to Switzerland!
Our first view of the Swiss Alps from the train...beautiful scenery!
Hello Everyone! Sorry we are a little behind, been a bit busy, but please continue to tune in and hopefully we will be caught up soon. Each blog is dated, so be sure to look at that so you know what time period we are in! The Swiss Alps, Swiss Army Knife, Swiss Bank, and Swiss Cheese all in one place! Ok, so we all know that the small country of Switzerland has many things that make it famous, but for those of you who might go there…it is expensive too, but we couldn’t pass it up. We decided that one [View Full Entry]

Hello Everyone! We survived our overnight train to Munich, even thought the cabin was a bit crowded, but we’ve gotten pretty used to sleeping like sardines in a can. We had plans to meet up with some friends in the small village of Tegernsee later in the afternoon, so we had about 5 hours to kill in Munich, which was enough time to introduce Heather to the German state of Bavaria. Our first stop was at a bakery for a fresh made pretzel, which are the best in the world, and then we grabbed a big coffee because we were still [View Full Entry]

Hello Everyone! No reservations, no itinerary, no idea what we were going to do, and we only had one week to get in as much Italy as possible. We definitely were going to stay in Florence, Rome, and Venice, but also wanted to check out Pisa and Pompeii. Since we were going to be arriving in the area late we decided the first night would be in Pisa and from there we would head to Rome. We caught a direct train from Monte Carlo and were on our way, but we almost didn’t make it! One stop after the Italian border, [View Full Entry]
