My parents are guilty for having me exposed to the travel bug's bite at an early age. "We are adventurers!", my dad used to say. The infection became a cronic affection. Out of 32 states of México, my homeland, I've visited 31. Beyond, I've been to 44 countries, 4 colonial territories and two funny micronations (the Vatican State and the Hutt River Principality) in all five inhabited continents. The 20 or so last entries correspond to the round-the-world trip I did between April 2005 and March 2007, though some parts are missing. Lazy writer I am. I love nature and wild life, but as a journalist, my main interest are the peoples of our Earth, their problems and, in particular, their struggle to overcome them. Life is not only made of those terrible things filling the headlines. Women and men are trying hard to make it better. That's the inspiration we need to follow suit.

Mis padres son culpables de haberme expuesto a la picadura del bicho viajero. Mi jefe solía decirme: "¡Nosotros somos aventureros!" La infección se hizo crónica. De 32 estados de México, mi país natal, he visitado 31. En total, he visitado 44 países, 4 territorios coloniales y dos curiosas micronaciones (el Estado Vaticano y el Principado de Hutt River) en los cinco continentes habitados. Las últimas entradas del blog corresponden a la vuelta al mundo que realicé entre abril de 2005 y marzo de 2007. Aunque faltan partes. ¡Vaya flojo! Me encantan la naturaleza y la vida salvaje pero, como periodista, mi interés principal son los pueblos de la Tierra, sus problemas y, en especial, sus luchas por superarlos. La vida no está hecha tan solo de las cosas terribles que llenan los titulares. Hay mujeres y hombres que trabajan duro por mejorarla. Ellos son la inspiración que necesitamos.

Pingyao and Shanghai are great examples of how the Great China can be the oldest and the newest at the same time (though surely there are older-looking places than Pingyao). The country is stunning in so many ways. For unknown reasons, whilst I was in South East Asia, I had heard comments on how difficult travelling is in China for a non-mandarin speaking Westerner, facing confusion and aggression from resented locals. It is true that The Middle Kingdom is still dealing with that split in its personality that has made it open its doors and close them for so many times along the millenia --and certainly the shutting happening way more often than otherwise. Yangshuo, in the Southern Chinese province of Guanxi, is one of those places where you can really feel you belong to something. The natural environment is simply astonishing: great karsts hiding behind the mist as sleeping giants, lovely rivers slowly carving green beautiful valleys, beatifully sparsed villages and rice fields, many little paths to hike or cycle... And the people are so nice! Well, this is real Communism: selling, shopping, consumming, leisure, entrepreneuralism in its most active expression. Whatever uncle Ho Chi Minh is thinking now in the Marxist Nirvana, it is not that he succeded in finding the way to social-equality and proletariat-dictatorship. He did find the way to self-determination, that goal he did reach it indeed. There are so many stories of war here, of unbelievable massacres commited by the invaders and big fights. DÍA 228. 10 DE DICIEMBRE DE 2005. DELHI, INDIA: LA CIUDAD Y EL RUIDO De regreso en India, llegar otra vez a una gran ciudad no me hace feliz. No me gusta Mumbai. No me gusta Delhi. Hace un año, cuando decidí lanzarme a hacer este viaje, estaba considerando otras alternativas, entre ella una beca para un curso de cuatro meses en esta metrópoli polvorienta y ruidosa. ¡Ufffff! De la que me salvé. Mumbai y Delhi son sitios de los que hay que salir corriendo antes de perecer entre la locura de su tráfico, de su contaminación y de su desastre humano. DÍA 210. 22 DE NOVIEMBRE DE 2005. POKHARA, NEPAL: UNA SITUACIÓN DELICADA Para ningún país es sencillo tener un vecino excesivamente grande. México, que no es ninguna miniatura, lo sabe muy bien por compartir más de tres mil kilómetros de frontera con la mayor potencia de la historia. Pero Nepal lo tiene mucho más difícil: no sólo es una adelgazada salchichita de Viena frente un gordo enorme, sino que son dos mastodontes gigantescos y voraces que la tienen aplastada entre sus panzas hacen lo posible para alcanzarla y engullirla. Comparada con Nepal, India es mucho mayor: 30 veces en superficie y 50 en población. Y China lo es más aún. El paisito de la cordillera de los Himalaya está atrapado entre ambas.
