With only a week left, we are all trying to fit in last minute things---we´re not ready to leave! Last week we went to the Spainish coast to an area called Roquetas del Mar and got a tad bit more tan. Then we came back to Granada to find ourselves in the last week of classes and needing to study for finals. My last few nights have been full of fun tapas bars, enjoying the crazy night (well, and early morning) life and eating shwarma on the way home. We´ve been to our Spanish friends´ pisos just hanging out or at the clubs with the Spanish music turned on high (except for the occasional Britney). We´ve been enjoying the last of our señora´s tortillas, manchego cheese and fresh pastries. And, not going to lie...the flan will ... read more

May 2nd 2005

Leaving Granada after having arrived less than 48 hours before, we were on a bus for a 12 hour ride to Portugal! To make the trip longer, the Spanish law states that bus drivers must stop at least every 3 hours to keep them from falling asleep, sooooo, we were on and off the bus all day long. Finally we were there by evening where we had dinner, and fell into bed. Laura, Natalie and I still hadn´t caught up on sleep and had a tour to catch at 8 the next morning so we crashed! The next day our Irish tour guide, Michelle, took us to Lisbon (we were staying at Costa da Caparica, a beach town outside of Lisbon), and we saw the Monastery of San Jeronimo, the Discoverers Monument and the Tower of ... read more

April 25th 2005

Since we booked our trip to the Canary Islands in Januray, we never thought April 20 would come! But, it finally did, and the week was amazing! Laura, Natalie and I left Granada the night before and took an overnight bus trip to Madrid, where we waited at the airport for our time to board our flight. By 3 pm that afternoon, we were checked into our hotel, only 150 meters from the ocean, and were sitting next to the pool soaking in the rays of the Canaries. Next to the coast of Africa, we knew the sun was a bit stronger than we were used to so sunscreen was a necessity, something Natalie and I would learn later! The first night we were there, after traveling for 24 hours without much sleep, we went to ... read more

Bullfight in Granada

We finally experienced Spain´s finest artform...the bullfight. Sunday we went to La Plaza de Toros in Granada and saw 8 bulls. One torero (bullfighter) was on horse and the others on foot. Our favorite was El Fandi, because he is from Granada and so the crowd went nuts and he showed off. The excitement was contagious! Having gone when I was in Spain in high school, and not having enjoyed the bullfight then, I didn´t expect to enjoy it this time. But, because I know more about the culture and background this time, I really had a good time. Plus it helps to be with a group of friends. Each torero has one bull to kill, and after the bull is dead, a team of horses pulls him out of the ring where he is made ... read more

April 16th 2005

At 8am on Saturday morning, Laura and I took a bus ride to the 19th century. Well, not quite, but pretty close. We headed for Sevilla to see their festival that occurs every spring. The women dress in Flamenco dresses and the men in three piece suits or riding outfits. Horses and carriages line the streets, filling quicker with each hour, and the sidewalks are transformed into city-like blocks with ¨casetas¨lined from one street to the next, back to back with others, for five blocks one way and five blocks the other. In these casetas, there is dancing, the traditional flamenco, eating, drinking and fellowship with friends. However, for people who aren´t from Sevilla, it´s not as fun as it sounds. These are casetas privadas, or private areas, where you must be invited in or have ... read more

April 12th 2005

Well, the first of April has come and gone and now it´s almost half over, along with our semester as we have just survived midterms! Not much has happened since spring break ended, except Laura´s parents visited from the states, I went to a tea house for a belly dancing show, and we visited Gibraltar last weekend. Okay, the tea house was kind of a surprise. Natalie asked me to go have tea with her and her friend so I met them there after hearing eating a supper interrupted by news that the Pope had died. More on those effects later. We went into the Arabian market neighborhood and stopped at a tea house where there was a belly dancer there to put on a show. It was kinda weird and she wasn´t too amazing, but ... read more

March 29th 2005

We made it back to Granada safely where we met Kejal and Charlie and showed them a bit of what we call ¨home¨! Semana Santa (or Holy Week) is a huge celebration in the Catholic country of Spain, but especially in southern cities such as Granada. There are processions that go on all week starting Wednesday and go until the wee hours of the morning on Easter Monday. Some are at night, some are silent, some are in central parts of town while others are in small neighborhoods, but they all have the same concept. To continue the 500 year old tradition of carrying heavy items from the church that are images of Jesus, the Virgin Mary and their lives as a penance. On Maundy Thursday, we caught a silent procession on our way to a ... read more

We left Ireland by ferry and crossed over to Wales where we had planned to spend a day or two seeing small towns and castles. However, we got into Fishguard, Wales on a Sunday and they told us that buses weren´t running that day and that train was our only bet. So, we got on a train and decided that it would cost us an arm and a leg to stay in Wales an extra day so we took the train all the way to London and arrived early! In the end it turned out to be the right decision. We got into London the night of March 20 and waited for our friends at Chelsey and Mal´s apartment until they got back from dinner. We had a fun reunion and stayed up most of the ... read more

March 20th 2005

Is there any better time to visit Ireland than March 17? We think not. The night before, Laura, Natalie, her boyfriend and I all flew into Dublin and grabbed some food before heading to bed for a good night´s sleep. From 9am on March 17th when we woke up, there were people in the streets dressed in green and simply enjoying life---a trait of the Irish! We watched the parade go through downtown Dublin where colorful floats, Irish dancing, and marching bands abounded. All of us dressed in green showed our spirit, Irish background or not! Most of my pictures are on my disposable camera since I wasn´t risking my digital in crazy Dublin that day, but I´ll hopefully get them up soon. We had lunch at a nearby pub before meeting up with Chelsey and ... read more

March 7th 2005

Now that we´re a full week into March, our semester is about half over and Laura and I are in disbelief...where did the time go?! Anyway, this last weekend we went with our program to Sevilla (Seville), a city 3 hours from Granada where we found more sunshine and higher temperatures...woohoo!! We got there Friday afternoon and spent some time wandering in Plaza de España where we ate our lunches and enjoyed seeing the sun--quite a change from Granada´s rain. Then we took a bus tour of the city, stopping at the Alcazar (the royal palace) which consists of 3 different palaces, all built at different times. Then we went to the cathedral in Sevilla that is the 3rd largest in Europe next to St. Peter´s in Rome and St. Paul´s in London. It is the ... read more
