Luckily we were able to coordinate a full day of Cordoba into our Argentina trip. While in Argentina we spent most of our time in the province of Cordoba as we were in Traslasierra which is about 4 hours by bus to the city Cordoba. Cordoba is another awesome city of Argentina ... it is deemed the college town of Argentina as there are 15 universities in the city. It has a feel much more like Buenos Aires than other Argentine cities and certainly does not feel like your typical Latin American city! There are many big plazas with a lot of green and miles of pedestrian walkways for shopping and cafes. Also, we were able to walk through "Nueva Cordoba" which is where there are many of restaurants and pubs ... we walked through it ... read more

Beautiful Salta ... tucked up in the northwest corner of Argentina. It still seems weird to think of heading northwest to get to a warmer climate but as are things here in the southern hemisphere. Half of the time we were in Salta we used the city as a base city to make beautiful day trips to Cachi and Cafayate ... but we also were able to enjoy walking around the city and having some good food. Salta is one of the most beautiful cities in Argentina ... so the guide books say and we do not dissagree with them! On Sunday we went to a market and also ran into a gaucho parade ... which was in honor of the "virgin of the gaucho." That celebration was awesome because we got to see literally hundreds ... read more

Another day trip from Salta.... we made our way to Cachi! On the way we enountered a beautiful stretch of the Andes Mountains. The route was quite interesting, including many hairpin turns winding up the mountains as we made our way up to over 11,500 feet. Stopping along the way for the goats and cows to cross the road and praying we wouldn't meet a bus that we had to pass as the road was not that wide! Luckily our bus driver wasn't the traditional crazy driver and took care as he drove us up. At the top there was a National Park with cacti which had over 250 different types of cacti. We stopped many times along the way to take in the breathtaking views from within the Andes Mountains. Even though it has been ... read more

We have left Villa de Las Rosas, said "hasta pronto" to our Argentine family and now are "UP NORT" in the providence of Salta. Many people told us that this was the place to come for our vacation (and coming north would get us a little warmer weather... very appealing) so here we are! To get here we took a 4 hour bus ride from Villa de Las Rosas to Cordoba. From Cordoba we took an overnight bus 12 hours north to Salta, the capital of Salta. We are staying in Salta, along with Dale (Sparta Principal) and Chris (Elementary School Prinicpal from Virgina) and are able to take day trips from here to some other "must see" spots. Our first stop.... Cafayate! The day trip to Cafayate was amazing. We took off with a group ... read more

Once again we are amazed as we have been so fortunate to stay with such a welcoming and wonderful family. The hospitality was amazing and we couldn't have asked for a better two weeks with our Argentine family! Cecelia's cooking was amazing and she drove us all over the place to see the area of traslasierra! Sofi and the rest of the family were so much fun and kept us on the go at all times!! Our house was such a comfortable pace ... when we would get back from our daily activities we would usually sit down for a snack and a mate at 7 and have a little snack. After the snack we would maybe go for a walk in the city, watch some TV or go visit some different parts of the city. ... read more

We are getting to experience education in Argentina! Andy and Sparta Principal Dale Stafslien are here on Fullbright Exchanges. Cecelia, who we are staying with and who is a principal at a secondary school here in Nono, Argentina came to Sparta last year and now we are here to work in her school. The school is about a 30 minute drive from Cecelia's house. All of the students and other teachers at her school have been more than welcoming to us. They are so interested in our lives and what it is like in los EEUU. Of course the first thing we noticed is that students are students wherever you go, as we looked into one of the classrooms and saw a few students texting discretely under their desks. We have given many presentations to different ... read more

Today ... Sunday the 26th of July ... we enjoyed one of the greatest gastronomic events of our lives! A true argentine "asado." We are extremely lucky to have been able to have this opportunity because we are staying with an Argentine family and they invited us to be a part of their asado. In the morning, before the asado we went for a walk to the city center of Villa de Las Rosas ... the city where we are staying. This helped us wake up and get ready for the asado. Upon returning to our house the asado process was about ready to start. Our host dad got a fire going to the side of the grill. The coals from the fire is what he would use to put under the grill for the asado ... read more

We are happy to report that we have arrived in the Southern Cone of South America... Argentina!! After an overnight flight crossing the equator, we landed in Buenos Aires around 8AM Monday morning. Despite all of the advice we´d been given, we failed to believe that we would be going to a place where it is indeed winter. It started to become more of a reality when the Argentine flight attendant was questioning Andy wearing shorts and sandals. After leaving the airport, we realized it is nothing like Wisconsin winters but it is chilly. Good thing we did bring some winter clothes... infortunadamente the shorts and sandals will be staying in our backpacks. Upon arrival we confirmed what we had heard about Buenos Aires, that it is a very European city with its lively cafes, busy ... read more

Well, as all good things go ... they have to come to an end. And that is the case for us here in Ecuador. After leaving Otavalo we made our way back to Quito where we would spend the last 2 days of our trip taking in the things that we had not yet seen. We arrived to our original hotel around 5:00. Just in time to get settled in for the last few days and then make our way to a restaurant for dinner. The food here has been quite good and hearty. Ecuador has many different ways to make stews and soups as the weather tends to be a little chilly by the time the sun goes down. We went for dinner and I had seco de chivo (goat stew) and Steph had more ... read more

After leaving the jungle town Tena we hopped on a bus for an 8 hour trek to our next destination which happened to be a small mountain town north of Quito called Otavalo. Riding public buses in Latin America is a whole different kind of experience! We were never surprised by what came onto the bus... whether it be a puppy in a diaper, random unidentified animals in boxes with breathing holes in the top, or a salesman trying to sell a herbal powder to basically cure you from any ailment you could ever have. Beyond the random sales and passengers, the views swirling through the Andes were amazing! When we arrived in Otavalo our bodies once again had to adapt to the super high altitude and change of climate. From the low humid jungle in ... read more
