We arrived in Bergen on Friday evening and learned before we even exited the plane that Bergen is known for its rain, which naively both Aaron and I were completely unaware of! Sure enough it was pouring with rain on our midnight arrival. We were welcomed by the gorgeous Ane and Mark, it was so nice to see there smiling faces. Our first day in Norway, Ane and Mark drove us to Flåm, stopping at Voss and Stalheim, a hotel which in its previous life was a rehabilitation centre for people with respiratory issues, back when they believed that clean fresh air would be the cure for these sort of problems. We were absolutely blown away by the beauty of this country from the word go. Every couple of hundred meteres was another stunning view, as ... read more

Another early start for us today. However, this time it wasn't wholly by choice. As the ship was only in port for ½ a day from 07:00 – 14:00 we decided that we'd ride the Fløibanan (funicular) to the top of Mt. Fløyen then afterwards have a wander through the old quarter . As every tour seems to go via the funicular as it is Scandinavia's only cable railway. As there are at least 3 cruise ships due in Bergen today we planned to get there early to miss the rush. For this reason we ordered breakfast in our room. As it is only served from 7am, we ordered it for 7:15. I set my alarm for 7am to give me time to wake up before the knock on the door. As I slept, I dreamt. ... read more

Day 1 We left Dublin and got flight to Amsterdam. A very quick transfer and we were on our flight to Bergen. At Bergen airport the good news was the arrival of Yvonne's suitcase, the bad news was the non appearance of Cillian's suitcase. Very efficient Flybus into town. Very snowy and dark. Hotel central as could be. A little faded but comfortable. Nice beds. It was late though and the only food we could get was Pringles and chocolate with a couple of beers. Funnily enough Yvonne was happy....seemed to regard this a fully balanced diet! Told the hotel man that he could wake us at any time with news of the missing bag......well, nothing wrong with being optimistic. Went to sleep....exhausted.... read more

We left Dragsvik on the Sognefjord on Wednesday and drove to Bergen. Once again, the ride was beautiful. We drove through more valleys, more mountains then more valleys. And we drove through 39 tunnels, 6 of which we over a mile long. We took this route because the other route had a tunnel that was over 25 kilometers. After arriving in Bergen, we dropped off the rental car and hoofed it for 3 days. Bergen reminds me of a small San Francisco in a way. It's surrouinded by mountains and lies right where a fjord meets the sea. Our hotel is right on an avenue that used to be the docks and there are fresh fish markets close by. It was also where we tasted some of the best food on our trip. We found the ... read more

Bergen is the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of London for a relaxing weekend. Our plane from Gatwick was only a quarter full and arriving in Bergen was too easy, no queues at immigration and we were straight on to a half empty bus which dropped us in the centre of town. Being midnight on a Friday night, the primarily student town of Bergen was pumping with many drunken students dressed in togas and sailor suits pouring into maccas in varying degrees of intoxication. I was doing double takes as girls were talking and yelling in Norwegian and then breaking into song in English in the streets; this small town was well and truly alive. We checked into our hotel right in the centre of town and I was amazed by the technology ... read more

Good times! Things have been going swimmingly well. I managed to get my washing done, buy tickets for a special excursion tomorrow, scale a mountain, scale my uke come down the mountain and brew myself another excellent cuppa! Even the sun has been out. I started out finding a nice bakery and getting myself a hefty cinnamon roll for breakfast. I also ordered a sandwich to take for my picnic lunch, always thinking one step ahead when it comes to food... Then I found the Information centre as I'd decided I'd take an excursion on the famous Flåm train. I ended up booking a round trip by train and then back by boat which is very exciting and financially crippling. In my most cunning moment of the day I also bought a ticket for the Funicular ... read more

Live train commentary from yesterday: I write this on the famous Oslo-Bergen scenic train ride. It's not bad. I'd say so far (2 hours into the 7 hour ride) the Glasgow to Mallaig journey is better, but then there have been some nuisance factors on this one. Opposite me are sitting a Texan father and daughter and call me a grouchy old cow but the father is bloody annoying. He has been since he sat down opposite me. He is the champion of stating the obvious and just doesn't stop the string of idiotic comments. The daughter is taking flash photos of the window, usually behind the window there are blurry trees or rocks as her timing is crap. I am concocting a plan. At the next stop I'll tell them the driver always takes a ... read more

Bergen is a beautiful, charming and small city, like most of Norway it has these lovely timber clad houses, it has a world heitage site - Bryggen, which is a small cluster of ancient wooden houses facing the harbour. Its appeal does bring in hundreds of thousands of tourists during Summer and there was the usual procession of japanese tourists following umbrellas. Bergen was Norway's capital in the 12th and 13th century but 70% of its population was later wiped out by the Black death. There are loads of museums with steep admission fees and plenty of things to do, but I must be honest it didn't float my boat. I was only there a day and that was enough for me, later on. You should book well in advance when visiting Bergen and the only ... read more
